Hello All, I had an amazing past weekend down in the City of Fontana participating in the US Cup National Mountain Bike Series. At which I raced in the Open Men's Super D on Saturday and the PRO Men's Downhill on Sunday.
Super D: The Fontana Super D is a brutal race which consists of; a "Le Mans" style start (group running up hill to the bike), a brutal hill climb, tight loose single track, fire road, another hill climb and a long flat sprint to the finish. I was able to compete in this same race last year, so I knew how tough it was going to be. At the start I got tangled up with a fellow rider and was the 5th rider to the bottom of the hill climb. Yet, I was the 2nd rider to the top of the first hill climb and by the end of the first fire road I was out in front by 15 seconds. I am excited to say that I finished the race in first place, beating 11 other riders and finishing 30 seconds in front of second. Downhill: The Fontana National Downhill is known for being one of the more difficult races in the country. The loose sand and large boulders cause the terrain to be very tough on the racer and unforgiving of mistakes. Arriving on Friday afternoon, I was able to get 2 practice runs in, 3 more on Saturday (before Super D) and 2 more before the race on Sunday. By Sunday, I had all my lines down and I felt confident that I could link together a strong finish barring any mechanical or other failures. On my race run I cleared all of the technical top sections and pinned all of my lines through the "Waterfall", yet as I started sprinting towards "The Wall" section of the course (1/2 mile long/flat sprint) I felt my back tire start to wobble. Looking down I saw that it was completely flat, but was staying on the rim. From there I decided to finish the race and I sprinted the whole "Wall Section", flat tire and all and finished with a time of 2:52. I am excited that I raced so well up until my flat and I am confident in saying that I would have had a competitive finishing time without my tire issues. Please see footage of my race run - http://drop.io/fontucky09 (it is the first video)
I now have a week off before I head down to the Sea Otter Classic, at which I will be racing in the Pro Men's Downhill and Pro Men's Super D
