Q&A - Personal Interview with Johnny Fennewald

Tell me about yourself.

Most people call me Johnny, but at the race track I'm known as "Flyin Fennewald". I've been driving for 6 years, but have been around the sport my entire life. My wife, Heather, and I have been married for 6 years and have a 3 year old son named Dawson. Like most other drivers, I work 40+ hours a week and the rest of my time is devoted to my family and racing.

What inspires you to race?

It's the adrenaline, pure focused adrenaline. Not only do I have high expectations of myself, so do my crew members, my family, my fans, and my sponsors. This is not just about me. It's about all of the other people behind the scenes too. They inspire me and keep me focused and striving to maintain that competitive edge. There is something about maintaining that "competitive edge". I call it "My stressful stress-reliever". It can get pretty hectic at times, but by the time race day rolls around we are totally prepared.

What are your hobbies outside of racing?

Who has time for a hobby when you work 40+ hours, have a family and own a racecar?(laughing)... I guess if I had to pick one thing it would be deer hunting. It only lasts for two weeks and fortunately it's not during race season.

How would you describe your driving style?

Go for the win! No seriously, I think it depends on the track, the racing surface, and the competition. There are so many variables that you have to take into consideration.

What is your most memorable racing moment or event? Why?

It's by far not my greatest accomplishment, but it's definitely my most memorable. It was the night I beat my dad in his dirt late model. I had raced against him several times, but never for the win. I knew with Dad that he wouldn't cut me any slack. In fact, he'd probably race me harder than anyone else. There was no way I was going to out-power him, so my only option was to out-drive him. And that's exactly what I did. I relied upon everything I had learned from him, and it all came together that night. I'll never forget it. I actually think this might be one of my dad's proudest moments too... He taught me everything.
