Personal Q&A

Music?

I listen to anything and everything when it comes to music. My iPod Nano has everything from Rap, Rock, Country and Reggae. My ipod shuffle is a differant story. I have mostly rock and rap downloaded for those weight and run workouts as well as those long training road rides. People tend to think I'm weird because I listen to Country. What can I say? I spent 3 years stationed in North Carolina!!

Do you train? What does your schedule look like?

My training consists of running, weights, road riding, trail/xc riding and dh riding. I am currently working swingshift (3pm - 1am) so a typical work day (4 day work week) is up at 10am, be in the gym (we have a gym at work) by noon. 1.5 mile run, and then hit the weights. My weight workout consists of high reps, medium weight. I want to be strong but also have endurance. In my job, I may chase a person on foot for awhile then have to fight them so being strong is a part of it but having good cardio and being able to out last a methamphetamine user who's been on a two day bing is paramount. On my weekend (3 days) I will try to get in a 30 mile road ride with some climbing thrown in. As for the mountain bike side, it all depends on how I feel that day. Usually it's trail riding with 12-15 miles and on occasion 26 mile ride or a day of shuttling on the downhill bike.

Why do you like this sport?

I love cycling as a whole. Why? Because whether you are trail riding, road riding, dirt/street riding or shuttling the downhill bike, you only have to depend on yourself. This sport is not like all team sports. If you don't podium or place where you want in the race it's no one's fault but your own.

What inspires you to compete?

My father passed away from cancer in November of 1996. He endured several surgeries that stripped him of his basic motor functions. Yet, he would insist my mother take him to work. As a supervisor, he believed in leading by example. When he was unable to continue on at work, he insisted on working from the house. He did this up until his death. My father was unable to compete in baseball, football or any other contact sports due to his hearing disability. Since he couldn`t do those things, he became a gymnast. He was selected for the Olympic team but was unable to go because he was very poor. My father left his home when he was barely 18 year old. He put himself through college and eventually went on to make a very good living. I look back at what my father had gone through in his life. My father`s courage, dedication to his job and willingness to go beyond what was needed is the reason why I compete. He not only inspires me to compete but to do the right things in life as he did.

Why do you compete?

I compete not only to win but to meet other riders, make friends and most importantly to have fun. Through competing in my local downhill race series as well as bigger venues such as nationals, I have met other riders that share my interest in competing. To this day, I still keep in touch with them. Competing is fun and winning is great but competing for me is a test both mentally and physically. I feel that competing teaches you about yourself. It is a test of discipline and a test of fortitude. Are you willing to give it your all or will you quit because you wobbled in a corner or didn't stick a line?

Overview

How I got started

I got started in racing with a dare from my older sister. She is a competitive triathlete and in the winter of `03, she dared me to compete in a local cross country race. After that race, I raced in one other cross country event (`04) that was held locally.

I wanted to compete in cross country racing but dowhill racing appealed to me more.   I didn't get into downhill racing until the summer of 2005.  After that first race, I was hooked and never looked back.

My first race in 2005,  was the Western State Police & Fire Games held at Northstar at Tahoe. After that race, I continued to enter the local series held at Northstar.  I placed well and had tons of fun that season.

Goals for the Future

My plans for the 2008 season are to attend as many downhill mountain bike races as I possibly can.  I want to continue to improve my riding and become even more competative.  I'm am committing myself and stepping up to Expert Class.

Stepping up to Expert Class will be fun and exciting.  I would like to put up some good results for the 2008 season.  I know that it will be challenging but fun.

I am very interested in road bike racing and will try to attend some local events.  Road riding is not new to me but road racing is.  It is something that has interested me since I watched my older sister compete.   I have a lot to learn but it will be fun.

Bio

Some Personal Information About Me:

I was born in Northern California to a Mexican father and a Japanese mother. I was raised in a small farming community that was very close knit.  I have one older sister and brother.

I played baseball and soccer through my school years and beyond. I grew up riding dirt bikes and dreamed of racing motocross. Upon graduation from high school, I immediately joined the Marine Corps. I spent four years in the Marines and was honorably discharged as a Sergeant (E-5). During my time in the Marine Corps, I was meritoriously promoted and received numerous letters of appreciation and accomodation.

Upon leaving the Marine Corps, I attended a police academy in North Carolina, graduated and was sworn a sworn police officer with a local agency. After a short stint as a police officer in North Carolina, I moved back to California to be closer to family.

I successfully completed a California law enforcement academy (better known as a 'police academy').  I graduated and was sworn in as a police officer with a small local agency. After a few years working for a police department, I applied for and was sworn in as a deputy sheriff with a much larger local law enforcement agency here in Northern California. My current assignment is patrol.

I have been together with my wife for 6 1/2 years and have been married to her for 5 years. We have a 2 1/2 year old son together and are currently planning on having more children.
