About Me

I am a 48 y.o. female short boarder, and nationally ranked Masters Swimmer. I am currently ranked 8th and 11th Nationally in Masters swimming. I am a former Olympic Trials qualifier, and a member of a National Championship Team; Stanford University. I am also a former unofficial World Record Holder in Masters Swimming. I have placed first in most of the surfing contests that  I have entered so far, including the Kahuna Kapuna 2005, 2007, 2008 as well as Women's Wahine Series 2004. I was featured for my surfing in the San Francisco Chronicle in a column called "Healthy Obsession". I am a physician who recommends surfing, snow boarding and swimming to my patients for exercise and relaxation. I also love to snowboard, and I played water polo for the Stanford University Club Team after college.

An Article Featuring Me in the San Francisco Chronicle

Dr. Maria Pease

Occupation: psychiatrist specializing in sports

Town: San Francisco

Sport: Short board surfing

Why: "The wave steepens. The rail of my board eyes the curving face. A graceful matching of angles and we are locked in; hurtling." That's from a poem I wrote about getting barreled at Ocean Beach.

Greatest accomplishment: Mostly conquering the fear many surfers have of going over the falls and being pitched onto your head during takeoff.

Gear you can't live without: My quiver of six performance short boards shaped by Ward Coffey. In surfing you develop a relationship with your shaper. They get to know how you surf.

Where you train: Ocean Beach, Linda Mar and Santa Cruz.

Best time to train: Fall and winter. Offshore winds hold up the waves. Dawn patrol is a classic in surfing. It's not windy and 6 a.m. is a good time to beat the crowds.

Biggest misperception about your sport: People take a lesson and they stand up and think they can surf. It really takes years to get the timing down.

Advice you'd give a rookie: Take lessons from Richard Schmidt Surfing School in Santa Cruz. Learn surf etiquette and follow it.

I surf with Maria a lot (well, not so much the last couple months). I'm not short on people to surf with. I like to ride with her because she charges, she's positive, she's humble, and notices when other people get there moments to shine.

I wonder what's going on in most peoples head in the water. Maria will tel you what's going on in here head. It's always pretty cool.
