Q&A - Competition
How did you get started?
I grew up in a very active family. Before I was even in high school I had two varsity letters in cross country skiing and one in cross country running. I played soccer all growing up and started out college playing for the University of Montana. I realized during m first season that I was ready for something new and I don't remember how I came up with triathlon. I do remember my dad saying "You're going to have to learn to swim," and I replied "Dad! I KNOW how to SWIM!" It turned out I didn't. I got into triathlon at Cal Poly San Luis Obispo when I went there on exchange my sophmore year of college. That team is huge, fun and great for learning how to race triathlons. I made some life long friends that I still race with. In Missoula Team Stampede is our triathlon group and its great. There are so many talented, experienced, fast athletes in Missoula I have unlimited training partners and so many people to teach me the ropes!
List your competitive highlights:
For 2009, I've raced twice, dusting off 1 1/2 years of not racing due to an injury with a 4th place finish at the Montana World Championships (Grizzly Triathlon in Missoula, MT). A few weeks ago I raced up at the Oliver 1/2 Iron in Oliver, BC and won my age group and came in 11th overall.
What are you planning for next season?
I'm racing the Desert 1/2 Iron in Oosoyos, BC; the brand new Calgary 70.3; Missoula's Garden City Olympic Triathlon and possibly The Grand Columbian 1/2 iron. I'm also going to do some cyclocross racing this fall, some trail running races and possibly some mountain bike racing- for fun.
What has been your biggest accomplishment?
Coming back from a lingering injury...I finally realized I just had to be tough and push through a little pain. IF I never tested it I'd never know. Surprisingly once I started moving more it got better quickly on its own.
