Q&A with Sarah

Why do you like this sport?

I love Ironman triathlon for the determination, drive and focus the sport requires. The race is long, 3.8K swim-180K bike-42.2K Run, and a lot can happen to an athlete on the day. The adventure is full of peaks and valleys. I always learn something more about myself from any peak, but even more from the valleys. To endure through those valleys is what gets you to the top of the podium. And it is very similar to lifes challenges.

Some Personal Information About Me:

Live in Penticton BC, Canada, married and coached by Pro Triathlete Scott McMillan- www.f9tc.com. I train 23-28 hours a week where I focus on 2 Ironmans a year as well as numerous Sprint, Olympic and Half Ironman distance races. My Mom lives in Bend, Oregon and Father lives in Seattle, Washington. I was born on Guam Island and sadly have no brothers or sisters. I love coffee, cooking healthy meals for friends, suntanning on Okanagan Lake, long switchback mountain climbs in the hot sun, mountain biking, rock climbing, and hanging out with my friends.

What inspires you to compete?

After every Ironman I like to come back down the finish line later in the night to watch the final finishers dashing for the tape, (the cut off is midnight). I see all kinds, people whom have worked very very hard to get there and they have the most inspiring stories. I especially get teared up from the 70 and 80 year olds that come through. Now these guys and gals have really taken the utmost care of themselves throughout their lives to be able to do this! 77 year old Sister Madonna Buder, a Roman Catholic Nun from Spokane Washington is an absolutly amazing inspiration. Here you can read about this wonderful lady-she even has a wikipedia entry: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Madonna_Buder Her fit body is in the shape of a healthy 30 year old I bet!

Do you like to travel? What's your best (clean) road trip story?

Love to travel, the best road trip was dumping our van, and cruising around the South Island of New Zealand for 4 days on bikes! Packed light and stayed in hotels along the way, stopping at local bakeries for fuel, enjoying the hot springs, avoiding those damn sand-flies on the west coast (!), biking up scary steep (20-24%)Aurthers Pass in a 23 rear cog. Best way to see New Zealand!
