Q&A - Competition
How did you get started?
My Dad was a really good flat-tracker back in his day, so I guess I had some motorcycle passion in my blood from him. I had a late start riding, as he didn't get me and my sister bikes until I was around 8 but I don't see that as a disadvantage because I never got burnt out like some younger kids do. My first bike was a XR80 that I broke in half! After that I started riding real moto bikes and started racing a supermini when I was 14. Since then I've done quite a few different disiplines of racing; I have competed in motocross, supercross, arenacross, enduro's, harescramble's, GNCC's, pitbike races, and even rode trials bikes.
List your competitive highlights
In 2004, I was the S.R.A.C. (sport rider association of Colorado) Open C state champion. In 2005 I was 2nd overall in points in 16-24 125 and 1st overall in 16-24 250. In 2006 I started traveling out of state and had a lot of fun racing with some of the faster kids around the country and seeing some fun and new tracks. I was also 4th overall in SRAC 16-24 125 and 3rd overall in 16-24 Open. This past 2007 season, I was 3rd overall in both 16-24 125 and Open.
What are you planning for next season?
I am planning to turn pro this next season and have set a goal of getting a top 10 overall in both Open Pro and 250 Pro in SRAC AMA District 25. I will also be racing the RMXA series here in Colorado, as well as traveling to Lake Whitney, Oak Hill, possibly the World Mini's, and will attempt to qualify for Ponca City and Loretta's in the 250 A stock and mod classes. I will also be traveling the AMA outdoor series, hitting every round that has a WMA race as my sister will be competing in that series.
What has been your biggest accomplishment?
I would say my biggest accomplishment has been consistently getting state championships and podium's the past 4 years. Chasing points is never easy because you have to ride well every weekend, and I seem to have done that my whole racing career. I have standout performances some weekends, but when I look back on a season as a whole, I can see my consistency week in week out and that is what wins championships.
Q&A - Personal
Why do you like this sport?
Motocross is the most individually demanding sport in the world. I love the challenge of self motivating yourself to become a better rider, and the shear adrenaline of competition. The reason I know I love this sport is that every time I put my gear on before I ride, I feel like a little kid again. I’m so giddy and just excited to be riding, even if I've been riding for weeks in a row. Every time I'm out riding I am in that moment, just riding and loving the freedom and challenge of motocross.
Some Personal Information About Me:
I've been riding motorcycles since I was 8 years old. My first bike was a clapped out XR80 that I broke in half! Riding has been my passion since that first fateful day I rode. My family is extremely supportive and take me to all the races in their motor home. My sister also races and is an up and coming WMA pro rider named Abbey Travnicek. I enjoy watching her progress as a rider and help her as much as I can because she has a real gift. I attend the University of Colorado pursuing a mechanical engineering degree. I graduated high school with a 4.1 GPA and scored a 32 on my ACT. My parents always used riding as motivation to do well in school; If my grades went down, I couldn't ride, simple as that. This really taught me to not taking riding for granted and I spend all my free time either riding or living the “moto lifestyle“, whether it be playing my friends in some MX Unleashed, or going to the gym to stay in shape. I really want to have a great year in 2008, and have begun training and getting my program aligned. My plans are to turn pro this year and travel around the country, hopefully qualifying for Ponca City and Loretta Lynn’s.
Describe your style...
It seems like I have two styles built into my riding style and it something everyone notices immediately when they first watch me ride. On a 250f, I ride really aggressive and am all over the bike, attacking the track as much as I can. But on a 450, I am much more relaxed and try to be extra smooth and flow. I am not the largest rider at 5'9 155lbs, so on a 450 I have to tame my style and be smooth but it seems to work well. I actually began riding a 250 two stroke and a 450 four stroke as soon as I jumped off of 85's, so I have quite a bit of experience on the big bikes and love to ride them more than my 250f. Due to my smooth style on the 450, I really enjoy supercross on it and ride out here in Colorado at a lot of private SX tracks to keep my timing and flow on the larger bike.
What do you want to be when you grow up?
After graduation I would really like to secure a career in the moto-industry as an engineer, either for a race team or an aftermarket company. I also want to keep riding and racing as long as my body will allow. My ultimate goal is to be one of those old fat guys riding 40+ Novice class, but just having a blast every race and always getting off the track with a smile on my face!
What has been your most embarrassing moment?
At this years SRAC Colorado State Supercross in my hometown of Colorado Springs, my friends and I planned a very embarrassing but funny prank. I am really into riding and racing pitbike's and have a really nice KLX, and there was a pitbike race scheduled as entertainment for all the spectators in between some of the serious racing. So my friend and I made the decision to buy some costumes to wear, but I had to practice on my big bikes for the night program so I let him go to the store and pick out a costume. What a MISTAKE! Moments before the race he pulled out my costume out of the bag. He had bought me a black, spandex "unitard" that was way to tight and revealing. And on top of that, he bought me a "Buz Lightyear" jet wing pack form the movie Toy Story. Well I wore it and the crowd loved it (My new nickname has since been "BUZ"!) and with that jet wing pack, I even got the holeshot and won!
