On the North Shore, it's hard to miss Kalani David. With a shaggyy mop of hair nestled above his miniature frame, he's become an unmistabable symbol of the youth in Hawaii. In the water, he's been doing airs and man-hacks well before most of us learned how to tie our shoes. Couple that with the fact that he may be an even better skater than surfer and you're looking at the latest answer to Shaun White. Say hello to Kalani David.
As one of the standout kids on the North Shore, a lot of people are probably pretty envious of your life. Can you talk a little bit about what it’s like growing up over there? [Children screaming in the background. It sounds like Kalani yells "No, don’t eat my chicken nuggets!"] Uhm…so yeah. Growing up on the North Shore is pretty sick. I was actually born in Costa Rica but moved out here when I was 5 years old. I love living over here. But it would be sick to live in the Mentawais or in Bali or something like that too. You're known for being on of the best, young skaters in Hawaii. Can you talk about that for us?
Yeah, I’ve been skating my whole life. I’ve been an alternate at the X-Games for a while now but I’ve never been able to compete because I’m really low on the list. It’s been fun though, I love it. But I usually just end up doing a quick, 45-second exhibition run. But I think next year I’m actually gonna be able to compete in the event. When will that be?
In June I think.
So if you had to choose between skating and surfing, what would it be?
Uhm…there’s no way that I could choose between those two. It would have to be both. And how about upcoming plans; what do you have in the works for next year?
I’m going to Australia, New Zealand and China. I’m doing some skate stuff in Australia and New Zealand and then I’m gonna go to China, like, just for a vacation. They have the world’s biggest skate park and I’m gonna go skate that while we’re there.
