The ProWake Academy on the Gold Coast is on the road with the Monster Energy Tigé Tour and head coach John Henson will be on hand at every event to make sure that every rider is pushing their personal progression during every set. When asked to mention a highlight of the upcoming schedule he simply laughed and said “check out the boat to start with, it’s the badest looking boat in Australia with the best engineering behind it. The backing of Monster Energy takes us on the best Tigé Tour to date, including Chad Reeds Monster Energy Super X Series where the boat will be on the in-field of the stadium at Sydney and Brisbane, we also get to support some really cool local events in Australia stopping in at YHK this weekend at Younghusband (SA), Doonstock at Bonnie Doon (Vic) and the Tigé Owners Reunion in Grafton (NSW)”. About the experience the riders will have, he went on to say “on top of this we have heaps of giveaways for everyone along the way and the best companies in the industry flowing us gear for everyone to ride on, it’s definitely going to be an experience of a lifetime”.

October 27, 2009. After an unexpected end at the twelfth date in the NASCAR Mexico Corona Series the last weekend in the track of "Hermanos Rodriguez",  the pilot Hugo Oliveras member of the Team Monster Energy-GM-IHOP, was able to get to the set of winners and thereby in the top ten Championship stellar category.

Really the luck was on his side, in the race Hugo stayed stable in the middle of the group, doing spectaculars pass lap by lap, but to the finish he had his reward, because a crash between several cars allowing to Oliveras finished in the third position, adding valuable points to the driver standing, positioning itself in the top ten of the championship, with 1529 points

“During the race we had a little problem in the car, but I could stay between the leaders and the time of the crash between Carlos Contreras, Toño Perez and Rafa Martinez, i was able to avoid them and bring forward positions, with that we were able get this valuable third place in the race. We were the less guilty and well we could get a positive result, everyone in the team is part from this result. Left two rounds Tuxtla Gutierrez and Aguascalientes, and Let’s Go to finish in the top ten of the season”. Said the pilot of the eleven car.

Furthermore, Alberto De La Torre, Executive of Monster Energy Mexico could not conceal his joy at the outcome of the Mexico City race: “We had good luck. Hugo went well all weekend, practices and qualifications, and already in competition took the circumstances to succeed and achieve a third very important for us. "Green claw" was present and this motivates us to close the season with grand finale. So far we have won a victory, two top ten and this third site that gives us the pattern to work with everything in the straight of the serial".

So far, the team members MonsterEnergy-GM-IHOP, are already prepared to reach Chiapas with well sharp claw to repeat a good result to keep them in the top ten Championship on the round thirteen in the great oval of Tuxtla Gutiérrez, Chiapas.

While Valentino Rossi won his seventh MotoGP Championship with a calculated third place finish at the rain-lashed Malaysian Grand Prix, it was Ducati Marlboro's Casey Stoner streaking away to score a convincing victory. And although the Australian made it look easy, the conditions in won in were quite difficult. The Grand Prix was actually scheduled to begin at 3 P.M., 30 minutes before the bikes were set to leave the stating grid in anger, rain came down in buckets and the start time was shoved back to 3:35 P.M. When the race did actually begin, Stoner immediately put the hammer down and clicked off lap times that were upwards of three seconds faster than any other rider. When all was said and done, Stoner sliced through the failing rain to win the GP by a brilliant lead of over 15 seconds.

In Rossi’s charge at the title, he began the race cautiously, soon motoring his way up to Rossi made his way up to the rear tire of Repsol Honda's Andrea Dovizioso. Rossi would make his way through to get into third, a few seconds behind point Rossi was a couple seconds behind Repsol Honda's Dani Pedrosa. Rossi would remain in position to clinch the title as Yamaha teammate Lorenzo finished fourth.

"It has been a difficult season and more difficult than last year because I made some mistakes and I had some bad races like in Portugal where we didn't work at 100%," Rossi said. "I have great rivals, but especially this year Jorge (Lorenzo) has made a great job and put a lot of pressure on me. We've made some great battles during the season and the overtake in Barcelona at the last corner was unforgettable for me. We have a lot of good and bad emotions."

Way back behind Lorenzo came Ducati Marlboro's Nicky Hayden in his second best finish on the Ducati.

"I was happy to get through, I can't even say the first corner, the whole first three laps was just chaos," he said of the early race chaos the rain caused. . "Guys running wide, especially here with all the braking zones. Guys just outbraking each other. Nobody knew-we got a sighting lap and a warm-up-so nobody really knew any braking points, where it was really slicker than the others. The track was, there was a couple spots where there was certainly more water than the others. So it was a lot going on

those first couple of laps. But I enjoyed it."

Rizla Suzuki’s Chris Vermeulen finished sixth, just ahead of San Carlo Honda Gresini's Toni Elias. Hayate Racing's Marco Melandri was eighth and Pramac Racing's Mika Kallio was ninth. Rizla Suzuki's Loris Capirossi placed tenth.

Sunday afternoon in the 71-lap Formula 1 Grande Premio Petrobras Do Brasil at the Interlagos circuit in Sao Paulo, Brazil, Brawn GP’s Jenson Button drove his Mercedes-Benz FO108W-powered BGP 001 to the 2009 Formula 1 World Championship. The 170th Grand Prix career start for the British driver, Button placed fifth in the race, more than enough to clinch his first world title.

"It's really amazing," he said afterwards. "After the last few races I've had this makes up for it. It was a totally awesome race, I'm world champion!

"Its 21 years since I first raced a kart,” added the Monster Energy-supported driver. “I love winning, I never expected to be world champion in F1, because you think racing drivers in F1 are different from you. But I did it today."

Button certainly earned the championship on Sunday as after a poor qualifying performance on Saturday forced him to start the race from the 14th position on the grid. After the five red lights dissolved themselves to start the 71-lap affair, Button capitalized on an early safety car period, scratching and clawing his way up to ninth by the end of lap number one. Button then executed several impressive and intrepid passes along the way, swayed clear of any on-track trouble, and deftly motored up to fifth place, the place he remained in to lock down the World Championship. The fifth place finish earned Jenson four points, putting him 15 points clear of his nearest combatant, Sebastian Vettel of Red Bull Racing. With one race left on the 2009 F1 schedule, it is now impossible for Vettel to make up the difference in points.

“It’s great to be sat here as the world champion, and personally I feel that I deserve it,” Button told the global media. “I was the best over 16 races and that’s what world champions are. I am it. I am a world champion! And I’m gonna keep saying it all night!”

Added tearful team principal Ross Brawn, the former Ferrari technical chief who formed the Brawn GP outfit at the eleventh hour after Honda pulled out of Formula 1 just prior to the beginning of 2009 season.

“It’s still got to sink in,” Brawn told the BBCafter the checkered flag was waved by sidelined Ferrari driver Felipe Massa in Sao Paulo. “It will take a while to sink in. It’s special - very special.

"We made hard work of it over the second half of the year, but we've done it, and it's very special. It's going to take a while to set in.

"As for Jenson, he's a fantastic racer and on the day he had a great race. He knew what he had to do.

"We've lost a little bit of pace in the car compared to some of our rivals over the second half of the season, but he's stuck with it and deserves everything he's got."

The final race of the 2009 Formula 1 season – The Formula 1 Etihad Airways Grand Prix Abu Dhabi - will take place on Sunday, November 1 at the new Yas Marina Circuit.

On a hot, sunny Saturday afternoon at the Las Vegas Motor Speedway Dirt Track, the organizers of the TORC Series finale - dubbed “The Final Showdown” - were having a hell of a time figuring out how to get water into the concrete-like Vegas adobe. Not having much luck, the crew workers soaked the track all day.

Come race time later that evening, the track ended up so rough and gnarly - replete with huge ruts, braking bumps, whoops and pot holes - that it took on the appearance of a full-on AMA Motocross circuit. And that was fine by 25-year-old Casey Currie. A former professional motocross and Supermoto racer-turned-Pro Lites truck driver, Currie (whose brother Brandon currently competes as a national caliber AMA Supermoto rider) made the best of his motocross experience, applying the many things he learned on two wheels to lead all 14 laps of the Pro Light main event.

A few minutes after the races, we slogged our way through the mud and tripped through the ruts to get a word with him.

Casey
Casey Currie

Racer X: Casey, before I jump into this, you came from motocross. How did you end up in closed-course off-road truck racing?
Casey Currie: I grew up watching and wanting to race motorcycles. And then my dad’s business was in the high-performance rear-end business, so with being around NASCAR and other forms of racing, it all kind of worked out to get me here. Also, my mom didn’t really want me racing motorcycles. With the off-road, when they used to come to Glenn Helen [Raceway] it was the coolest thing to watch because you’d get the motocross version with the trucks and they also brought in the cage, so it was a little safer. It definitely fit my description of what I wanted to do in life.

You held first-place throughout the entire race tonight. Why did things go so well?
We did some crazy stuff today.

Really? I heard something about the gearing you used in the truck…
We decided we were going to do some crazy gearing. My dad went and found an older gear down at a nearby shop. We knew the gear was in a NASCAR facility down the street. So we made some NASCAR connections, got a gear, drove it over here and my dad mounted it. He did it himself. We went out there for the race with not testing and the gear was absolutely perfect. We also did a crazy, crazy cut on the tires. We had something no one does and I actually won on it in Texas. The thing I did today was exactly what I did in Texas when I won it.

So did your dad sense the track was going to be in this sort of condition tonight?
It was a full-on guess. It was one of those things where I wasn’t faster than the other guys yesterday [Note: Currie was third in Friday night’s main], so how I look at it is that if I’m not faster than the other guys, I’m going to change everything to be faster or way slower. It worked today.

You guys didn’t practice today. During the warm-up laps, how did the track seem to you? Were the conditions what you were hoping for?
The track was brutal from lap one. It was like Glen Helen, last moto of the day. It was just brutal. I did my line choosing before the race started and I stuck with it from the green flag.

The track did look extremely torn up and it looked like you were taking motocross lines out there…
I mean, with this track, I don’t care who you are, if you ride motocross, you’d be up front. It was one of those deals where you knew it was coming. Growing up around tracks like Glen Helen, this proves that moto definitely makes us better truck drivers!
Casey
From the first lap on it looked you certainly had everyone covered. Inside the truck, did you feel the same way? You know, I was nervous. Marty [Hart] has been fast all weekend. Jeff Kincaid has been flying. Marty told me earlier today that when he was riding factory motorcycles, Ricky Johnson was his mentor for a long time. He said, “When you get on the track, no matter if your equipment is bad or good, you’re the only person that can make it win.” In the race, I figured, Hey, right now is the time. I have to do it now. So that’s what I did. And I felt at home. I had a couple of close calls, but was just because the track was brutal. I just did what was totally natural. I didn’t push it, ever.

About halfway through the race, Hart started applying pretty serious pressure on you. Did you feel that?
You know it was one of those things where if you start focusing who’s behind you, you’re going to race who’s behind you. So I just kept my eyes ahead of me and raced to the front.

You certainly seem elated to have won here tonight!
Yeah, it would be totally different if we had a better year, but we had our ups and downs this year, for sure. To come out of here with this, man, it just brings so much momentum into 2010.

Congratulations, Casey.
Thanks!

Interview by Pat Schutte

Guys like Jeff Watson, Mike Marker and Tinker Juarez sought it out first. Eddie Fiola, Bob Haro and Mat Hoffman certainly put the sport on the map. But Monster Energy’s Jamie Bestwick just elevated the sport of BMX Vert riding into the stratosphere.

Wrapping up, hands down, the best-ever BMX Vert competition summer in the history of the sports, Bestwick completed the ‘full pull’ so-to-speak in winning the Dew Tour’s PlayStation Pro this past weekend in Orlando, Fla. The win, coupled with wins at Chicago’s Nike 6.0 BMX Open, Portland’s Wendy’s Invitational, Salt Lake City’s Toyota Challenge, allowed Bestwick a perfect score of 400 on the Dew Tour – first time that’s ever happened in BMX Vert – and an unprecedented FIFTH STRAIGHT BMX Vert Dew Cup. Add to this gold at X Games 15 (despite being knocked out cold on his second run in the finals) and Bestwick has, to visit it one more time, just completed the greatest BMX Vert competition season in the history of the sport.

Practically old enough to have fathered half the field in BMX Park, Bestwick stands as a testament to what the future holds for the sport. Hard work, Dedication with a capital “D” and standards set for himself as lofty as his set up airs, Bestwick, er “Bestrick” as he’s called, carries the torch as BMX’s burliest of the burly.

Traveling back to his home in Pennsylvania today (Bestwick commutes to Woodward Camp), Monster Energy caught up with Bestwick via iPhones and scored some comment from him on his utterly monstrous, mind-roasting summer high above the metal coping.

Monster Energy: How do you put the perfect season you just had into words?

Bestwick: “Absolutely amazing! It's such a great achievement for me to ride at such a high level all season and pull of a feat that has always eluded me.”

Monster Energy: Outside the concussion you suffered at the X Games, did you have any injuries you had to overcome this summer, or was it a relatively injury-free competition season for you?

Bestwick: “No my torn MCL has plagued me all year, then I severely damaged my ring finger. The X Games crashed knocked me out, the Salt Lake crash sucked. Still have missing skin and scars, now my right wrist has a cyst in it and it's bothering me when I ride.”

Monster Energy: Fuuuuhhh …

Bestwick: “Yeah, but you tend to forget about those things when you’re riding well.”

Monster Energy: You have a TON of kids that look up to you from Woodward Camp. How rewarding is that to get a text message, call or email from those kids congratulating you on your Dew Tour sweep?

Bestwick: “It's awesome, to have such great fans and friends is a blessing, and their support means the world to me. My Facebook page has been a great way of interacting with the fans, and at signings at the Dew Tour.”

Monster Energy: And what’s some of the best pieces of advice you dole out to the young, up-and-coming Monster Army kids that are looking to excel in the sport of freestyle BMX?

Bestwick: “Have fun and enjoy riding bikes! Be safe and always wear a helmet. The Monster Army crew knows the score!”

Monster Energy: You’ve raised the bar in BMX Vert to stratospheric heights. What can you, Chad, Steven, Kevin, Simon, Jimmy and the others possibly do advance the sport in 2010?

Bestwick: “There's so much left to be done, sometimes contests don't give you the opportunity to go for unrealistic tricks. They (contests) make you ride smart and be more focused on you dialed tricks. BMX has so much more to give in regards to tricks, and over the coming years your going to see huge leaps in vert progression.”

Monster Energy: Right on, Jamie! Thanks for your time, man.

Bestwick: “Anytime. Hit up my Facebook page at:

Long Time Coming: 5 Minutes with Rick Huseman

Long Time Coming: 5 Minutes with Rick Huseman

By Eric Johnson

"It's definitely too soon to not race for the championship," said Rick Huseman after sweeping rounds five and six of the Traxxas TORC Series 4x4 Truck series at Crandon last June. Up to that point, the native of Riverside, California had won five of the first six races of the series and looked, well, unbeatable. "People ask me if I’m going to slow it down a little bit and try and get this championship. I'm like, "It's not even halfway over with yet. I still have to drive as hard as I can to get as many wins as possible. It's too early in the season to try and kick back if you know what I am saying. I still have to fight for every win."

In his 900-horsepower, 4,000-pound #36 Monster Energy/Traxxas/ Toyo/Toyota Tundra Pro 4X4 Truck, Huseman kept fighting to maintain his consistency throughout the summer months, finding his way upon the podium in the next five of eight rounds. Now, with only the last two rounds remaining in the 2009 TORC Championship Series – this Friday and Saturday night at Las Vegas Motor Speedway-Huseman has a 28-point lead in the Pro 4X4 Championship. And a championship has been a long time coming for Rick Huseman. Since beginning his professional off-road racing career in the Pro Lite classification in the late 1990s and continuing right up through the Pro 4X4 class, Huseman has placed second in various championships on five different occasions. Now knocking on the door of his first major title, in Huseman's words, "I have to win this one." On Monday afternoon we talked to the Riverside local to see where his head was at heading into the Las Vegas finale.

Rick, dumb question, but here we are four days out from the TORC Series finale in Las Vegas and the Pro 4X4 Championship is yours to win. How are you feeling about things?

I'm feeling real confident. We just have to pull off a decent weekend and we should be able to get the championship, no problem. I'm feeling pretty confident about the whole thing.

You have, what, a 28-point lead, right?

Yes, 28 points.

So baring any crazy misfortune, you should be in good shape, huh?

Yeah, we should be in real good shape. We just need to have a clean weekend and depending on how may trucks are there, we should just basically have to start both races and we should be able to pull it off.

Would you breath easier by wrapping it all on Friday night?

I would. All I have to do is on Friday night if I finish in front of Kyle [LeDuc]–no matter where I finish–then it's wrapped up. So that would be a really great thing to celebrate on Friday night and still have another race to go where I can just drive as hard as I can, you know? But I have to play it safe on Friday night. I just can’t try and kill it and beat Kyle because I have to make sure I finish off the season good.

You've won six races this season and were out of the top 10 only once. Dare I be so bold, you certainly deserve this title…

Yeah, we've definitely been working at it. The truck is working great and they new Toyota motors they've been giving us are awesome. They have so much power. Everything is just working great.

I don't mean this the wrong way, but why have you done so well this year when a driver and truck as strong as Johnny Greaves and his Toyota have struggled with mechanicals and some inconsistency?

Well, for one, he has a brand new truck this year. I mean since the last race, they've already gone out twice testing and they're still trying to figure that truck out and trying to get it to where it's working like it's supposed to be. He's just struggling to get that truck to proper. That's the problem with building a new truck. Sometimes it takes a long time to get it back dialed in. It's just one of those things.

As far as your current race truck, you've been tweaking and fine tuning on it for a while now, right?

Yeah, this is our fourth season on that truck, so it's pretty dialed now. You know when you have that many races on it and you're fine tuning on it after every weekend, making it better and better, it's pretty dialed now.

Rick, one thing that I've noticed at the races is that always rolling around in the dirt and wrenching on your truck quite a bit.

(Laughter) Yeah, I like getting in there and making sure everything is done right. I mean I'm a big part of the team myself. I do the transmissions and the rear end and the clutches and everything. That's my job.

The late, great Ayrton Senna of Formula 1 fame would spend hours on end with the engineers and mechanics to make sure he knew understood how every and every part of his car worked. With your "hands on" approach to your equipment, do you think that's an advantage for you and the team in the long run?

I think so. I think it helps a lot. It builds your confidence that everything is done right. You kind of oversee what's going on. You know if you get some guys working for you that don't really care, or they care, but aren't as meticulous as they should be, that's when you start having problems. My family working on the truck, they want to see me win just as much I do, so they're going to try and do everything in their power to make it right.

If I have it right, your professional off-road career started right around 1999. Does that sound correct?

I can't remember when it exactly started. I was doing one-off races back then. Then I ran a full season in 2000.

And from 2001 and onward, you placed second overall in the Pro Lite division four times!

I finished second four times in the Pro Lites (laughter).

Was all that frustrating for you?

It was very frustrating. Back then I was younger and I didn't realize how much a championship meant and how much help in the long run in my career. In a couple of those championships I had a big points lead in the last weekend and just threw them away by just driving too hard. I definitely could have won a couple of more championships if I had my head on straight, but I've learned a lot since then and I've realized how precious championships are. You know we got a second in the championship last year by default because the CORR Series stopped. I was tied with Carl Renezeder for the championship and they gave it to him because had one more win than I did. So that's five second place finishes in championships now, so this one I have to win. It's going to mean a lot.

To that end, what'll mean to you to win the championship this weekend?

It'll mean everything. We've been going at this a while now. Like I said, we've had five second places. We're due for a first place. It's not like we're not fast enough. We're always there. To pull it off will be great. It'll be good for the whole team. It'll be good.

I knew that the last BMX Supercross World Cup was going to be held in Frejus, France October 8-10.  I booked my flight, had my travel partner, and entered the race.  The plan was to go down to Chula Vista OTC October 1st and prepare for a few days before heading over the pond.  I love having everything all planned out.

September 29th I get a call and was asked if I wanted to go to Copenhagen, Denmark on September 30th for the announcement of which city would win the 2016 Olympic Games.  I wasn't invited by the Chicago 2016 group that was going over for some reason, instead I was to be brought over by the Danish who had a vested interest in bringing a BMX Racer over.  What was happening you ask?  Be patient.  I was now stressing out because if I accepted the offer, I would now have to spend the entire day packing, forego my trip to Chula Vista and have everything turned upside down that was already planned out.  How would I get to France after the Copenhagen event?  Would not having track time before the France race affect my performance?  After hours of going back and forth with myself, I decided to go to Copenhagen.  After all, the trip I made in 2007 to Beijing as part of the Olympic Goodwill Tour was the best thing I've ever done for myself.  From that point forward I promised myself that anytime I could go to promote myself, my sponsors and my sport, it would always be a good thing.

So what was happening for BMX Racing?  Downtown Copenhagen was the center for all events surrounding the 2016 Olympic bid decision.  There were to be a few sports displayed throughout the days, with live music and giant screens that followed the bid city's presentations, TV coverage and the IOC's announcement of the winner.  BMX Racing was one of the sport's put on display and the only sport that continued demonstrations throughout this important event.  I was being brought in to ride this track with younger amateur riders to show the world more of this sport.  You can't imagine how big of a deal this was for BMX Racing.  I certainly had no idea it would be like this.  The world's tv's were set on this square in Copenhagen when decisions were announced and there were thousands of people in this square checking everything out.  Thanks to at&t, my phone was on and recorded some great shots.  And yet again, the special Nike shoes I wear for racing got so much attention.  These red/white/blue Nike's trip people out everywhere I go and they always ask where they can get them.  Be sure to check out all the videos and pictures below.

The night before the 2016 decision I went to dinner with the Chicago bid crew.  I had dinner amongst David Robinson, Michael Johnson, Brandi Chastain, Nastia Liukin, Nadia Comeneci, just to name a few, along with maybe my favorite person of all time, Bart Conner!  I love hanging out with that guy.  Have you ever heard of singer Johnny Vincent?  Well, I was sitting by him and Bart and at one point during the dinner, Johnny handed his phone to Bart and Bart proceeded to have a conversation with Mike Ditka!             DAAA BEARS!

It was now time to head to Frejus, France, which is my favorite location on earth- so far.  This race was more abnormal than usual because the last 3 years I came in to this event in a top 3 ranking.  This year, because I missed the first world cup event, I entered this race in 7th.  My goal was to reach another podium position for the year-end world cup standings.  The UCI's Johan Lindstrom continues to put on better events and this race was no exception.  Plus, he's got some other great things in the works that will hopefully elevate the sport even more.  The race went pretty good for me.  I once again got 2nd.  This meant I squeaked by and got 3rd in the Overall BMX World Cup Rankings.  In 2006, I got 1st.  2007, I got 2nd.  2008, I got 1st.  2009, I got 3rd.  Being as the BMX Supercross Series is quickly becoming the most prestigious on the circuit, I am very happy that I've been so consistent with it over the years.  Of course the race to the 2012 Olympics heats up even more next year so I hope to get back on the top of that overall standing.  Here's the race, check out that crowd:

After the race, the UCI had their first ever official awards ceremony and party celebrating the 2009 season.  Such a good time hanging out with friends outside of the track and recognizing everyone's talents for the year.

I thought I would include this because I thought it was funny.  Here is comedian Kevin Hart's skit about a muscle head in the gym.  YouTube - Kevin Hart workout skit 3
This skit has always been one of my favorites and I finally found a perfect time to mimic it while I was at a Danish training center.  You may not think it as funny as I do, but being able to make this video made my trip.  GO211 Bike Video- donny breaks world record bench press

Monster’s Bestwick completes perfect season in BMX vert; Button clinches F1 title; Rossi moves closer to winning the MotoGP championship

Though it’s a toss up as to who we’d lead with this week as you can’t argue the importance of both a Formula 1 driver’s title and overall Dew Tour BMX vert championship, the nod has to go to Monster’s Jamie Bestwick for completing his first-ever perfect BMX vert season and winning his FIFTH consecutive Dew Tour Cup.

Nike 6.0 BMX Open, Wendy’s Invitational, Toyota Challenge and the PlayStation Pro – all 1st place finishes at each and every Dew Tour stop. Add to that gold at X Games 15 and Bestwick just completed the greatest BMX Vert competition season in the history of the sport.

“It’s all quite humbling, actually,” said Bestwick. “I was fortunate to remain rather healthy all summer, having enough time to recover after knocking myself out at the X Games before the next Dew Tour stop. That and I caught a couple breaks here and there, pulled out a number of tricks that I could have easily slammed on. I’d say it all added up and the hard work I put in to prepare for the ’09 season definitely paid off.”

Bestwick unloaded his arsenal of tricks – with his signature lofty amplitude above the coping applied to each one – on his first run and nailed down a 93.25 to rival Chad Kagy’s 92.50 for the victory. He sealed the run with a fastplant flair, coming off a trick that nearly ejected him into the seats on the previous wall. Classic Bestwick. Epic year.

Formula One, Sao Paulo, Brazil

Quite possible the hugest win of the 2009 competition season for Monster – in a global sense – was Monster Energy’s Jenson Button capturing his first-ever Formula 1 driver’s championship, doing so with a 5th place finish this past weekend in Sao Paulo, Brazil. Button piloted his Brawn GP/Mercedes Benz FO108W-powered BGP 001 through the Grande Premio Petrobras Do Brasil on the Interlagos circuit, racing smartly to secure the overall title.

“It’s really amazing,” said Button following the race. “After the last few races I’ve had, this makes up for it. It was a totally awesome race … I’m a world champion!”

Monster Energy’s Valentino Rossi took a huge step towards securing another overall MotoGP title, this past weekend picking up 20 points on his teammate and championship rival Jorge Lorenzo – whose race ended before it even began when he slammed into the back of Nicky Hayden on the first turn. The end result was Rossi racing to a fairly conservative 2nd place finish (behind Casey Stoner) and taking with him a 38-point lead to the penultimate round of the 2009 MotoGP series in Malaysia next Sunday.

Said Rossi: “I want to try and win because I felt good with the setting and, sincerely, I don’t want to say that if I didn’t have the championship I win. You always have to keep five percent and not push too much because if I make a mistake today after the mistake of Lorenzo then I am very stupid. I tried to win but I was always keeping a five percent margin.”

Also, Monster Energy’s Colin Edwards (Tech 3 Yamaha) placed 5th in the race.

Monster Skate Park skater Greg Lutzka made the Dew Tour podium for the first time this summer, popping and slashing his way to a well-deserved 3rd place finish at the PlayStation Pro. With the effort Lutzka placed 6th overall in the standings, just six points back of a top five finish behind Rodolfo Ramos (276-270).

In BMX Park Monster’s Dave Mirra pulled easily the nuttiest trick of the weekend when he attempted to back flip on his drop in off the massive wall ride obstacle and wadded up on the landing. Shaken but not deterred, Mirra bounced up and pulled a couple more tricks before calling it a day with a 4th place finish. On the season Mirra kind of surprised everyone with a 2nd place overall finish – ten points back of winner Garrett Reynolds (344-334) – and besting defending champ Daniel Dhers.

In BMX Dirt Monster’s Cameron White, the defending Dew Tour Dirt champion, also brought home a 4th place finish at the PlayStation Pro. White would wind up in 6th place on the season, Monster’s top overall finisher on the dirt jumps (with Scotty Cranmer in 9th and Ryan Guettler in 11th).

Finally, the much-anticipated showdown for 1st place on the Dew Tour’s Skate Vert ramp ended up going to Bucky Lasek. Monster’s Pierre Luc “PLG” Gagnon just couldn’t seem to find the magic like he has in year’s past – and at the X Games this summer – and wound up in 5th at the PlayStation Pro – 3rd overall for the season in Skate Vert. Monster’s Alex Perelson placed 8th in Orlando and wound up with a top ten overall finish (9th) on the season in Skate Vert.

CH Racing Husqvarna’s Antoine Meo (Monster), riding for Team France, placed 3rd in the E3 class. America’s top finisher with Monster was Destry Abbott (Monster Energy/Kawasaki), who placed 11th in the E2 class.

Overall on the week-long competition Team USA would place 5th, led by Monster Energy/Kawasaki riders Abbott, Ricky Dietrich and Damon Huffman.

Surf Update

Monster Energy’s Owen Wright, the 17-year-old superstar-in-the-making, has qualified for the 2010 ASP World Tour! Wright, a former ISA World Juniors gold medalist and current Australian National Team member, surfed the world on the WQS and impressed enough to make the ASP World Tour. Big congrats from Monster to Owen. Yeah! Also, Monster-backed French surfer Marc Lacomare, 19, placed 2nd at the recent Oakley Global Junior Challenge held in Keramas, Bali. Lacomare is the current European Pro Junior Champion. Yeah, Marc!

Ken Block won the Super Production class in his Monster Energy-shod Subaru this past weekend in and around the Keweenaw Peninsula and along the shores of Lake Superior in the final Rally America contest of the season. Block would finish 3rd overall in the race.

Said Block of his less-than-spectacular rally results this year: “It’s been a horrible year for us. Blown turbos, car overheating, mechanical issues … I’ve been driving the best I ever have and I just feel I can’t get anything to go my way.”

Despite all the bad luck Block and co-driver Alex Gelsomino would finish 4th overall on the season.

Finally, here’s an excerpt from Eric Johnson’s recent interview with Monster Energy/Pro Circuit/Kawasaki racer Josh Hansen:

EJ: In the pits in Vegas I overheard some people mention that they were stoked you were on the Pro Circuit team. I also heard some people say, “How in the hell did Hansen get that ride with Mitch?” Did you pick up on any of that?

Hansen: “Yeah… It is what it is. I’ve got a few people who hate me. I heard a few different things. It is what it is. It just sucks. I race because I love it, I don’t race for people. I want to be liked, obviously. I want to be one of those guys that are one of the best. That’s what every person wants. I want the same. I want to make as many people happy as I can, but you’re not going to make everybody happy. I just know why goals are and that’s what I have to concentrate on and just keep pushing forward.”

Statesville Christian student Emylee Wright, 16, won the World Wakeboard Association Junior Women’s National championship this year.

Published: October 3, 2009

Emylee Wright remembers being unconscious in the water, with some part of her brain still alert enough to hear the rescue boat puttering toward her after she was knocked silly missing a wakeboard jump.

"It was really weird," Wright recalled. "It was the weirdest thing ever. I vaguely remember that noise. It was just really slow bubbling noises."

The boat pulled up beside Wright and hauled her body onboard.

Still dazed, Wright took a moment to survey her surroundings.

Her hair was dripping wet from being in the water, she was wearing her wetsuit and still had a wakeboard attached to her feet.

Wright paused, then posed a question to the group peering down at her.

"Did I ride today?" she asked.

These moments are just part of the price of wakeboarding.

Concussions are so common that, when asked what injuries she has suffered as a wakeboarder, Wright mentioned just two ankle injuries.

"Well, concussions are a big one, but they're kind of normal," Wright said. "You don't freak out as much after the first one. I've been knocked out more than once."

But she's gotten back up. Every time.

And after six years of honing her slightly unusual craft, Wright — a 16-year-old student at Statesville Christian — has a lot more to show for it than just bumps and bruises.

Like a world championship.

Wright finished third place at the World Wakeboard Association Junior Women's National championship earlier this year.

That qualified her for the world championship event, which she won easily.

"It's really hard to grasp," Wright said. "I've always been looking and saying, 'Oh, I want this to be me.' Now it is me, and I can't really wrap my mind around it."

Wright earned a score of 70.33 points from a panel of judges during her world championship run.
No one else even broke 60 on the 100-point scale used to determine the winner.

The second-place finisher was awarded 57.33 points for her performance, far, far behind Wright.
Wakeboarding is a somewhat new sport, but steadily gaining in popularity among the current generation of athletes.

Connected via tether to the back of a boat, much like water skiing, contestants are pulled along in the water for a predetermined length.

Then the boat turns around and comes back to the start.

This is called a run, and all riders perform jumps, flips, turns and grabs from their wakeboard, which is shaped like a snowboard.

The riskier the trick, the higher the potential points.

"I had what I wanted to do in my head," Wright said of her championship run. "The week before, all I did was go out and do my run, then come back inside. I knew what I wanted to do."

Wright also knew what she wanted to do when she was 10 years old and saw a wakeboarding picture on the back of an Overton's magazine.

On Christmas morning that year, a board was waiting for her behind the Christmas tree.
"I saw that picture and wanted to do it," Wright said. "It was just to do something different, something adventurous."

Before wakeboarding, Wright was an avid gymnast.

She practiced for 30 hours a week for several years, an experience that has been incredibly valuable to her wakeboarding career — she landed her first flip with her eyes closed and never freaks out while taking flight.

"That actually surprised a lot of people," Wright said with a chuckle. "But after doing gymnastics, your air awareness is amazing."

After a successful two-year span doing tournaments all summer, Wright is teetering on the line between amateur wakeboarder and professional.

When the season starts again in March, Wright wants to compete exclusively on the professional circuit and one day be known as the pre-eminent female boarder.

And when she wants something, she usually puts in the work to get it.

"You have to train three or four days a week," said Todd Wright, Emylee's father. "There's no way around it. She's out practicing probably six to eight hours a week. She's put in the work and has come so far. She's earned everything."

Born and raised in Milwaukee, WI and currently residing in Los Angeles, CA, as well mannered and quiet as he may seem, Greg Lutzka, plain and simple, is a threat. Good Luck Army!

Congrats to Evan Dingle for his winning entry:

"I believe the person that should win Dave's bike should be someone with a heart for the sport. someone who loves to ride and can not think of anything else. a person that loves to win but can also be man enough to lose. someone who can take a loss and turn it into a chance to improve their skills and learn new tricks, so that next time they compete they can be confident in their abilities.

I believe I have all of these qualities, I am currently a poor college student trying to pay my way through school. I would love Dave's bike because I can not afford one myself. I ride everyday and I'm always trying to get better. I believe that with Dave's bike I could definitely improve and it would really be a dream come true to own his bike. I have been watching him ride since I was a kid and nothing would make me happier than to be able to win Dave's bike.thank you for your time. "

Enjoy your brand new Mirraco Bike Evan!

What up Monster peeps!?

Well to get ya all up to speed on what I've been doin, ill start off by saying I've thoroughly enjoyed my off season, which was only a couple weeks but it was needed. I haven't gotten up to much riding wise since wrappin up the RBXF championship in August until recently. I was hitting up some moto tracks, taking care of business with my glove co DEFTfamily(deftfamily.com), a lil bit of boxing training, but most of all just taking it easy and kickin back! As of last week I've been back on the program though with my trainer, Ryan Hughes and we've been getting back on the sx track as well.

My time off was well needed. Since getting back on my cycle consistently I've definitely been enjoying myself more. This year was a long year, and its still not over! I've got some demos in Spain throughout November I'm doin and those are always fun, low pressure events. Ya get to travel a bit, usually don't have much time to see the city, but its usually still a tone of fun.
But most of all, I'm concentrating on my sx riding from now through January. I wanna make this thing happen, I was so close last year that I couldn't stand not to try again. I got plenty of time so I'm using it wisely (thanks to Ryno) and gonna keep plugging away and see what happens in January. That's all I can do! Anyway, thanks for reading and supporting Monster athletes, take care, peace

-Nate

Hello Everyone!

Sorry it's been so long since I checked in last.  It's been a busy
month!

Two weeks after the last motocross race in Steel City, Penn., I did a
40-mile mountain bike race in Wisconsin.  This was my second year at
the Cheq 40 and I managed to drop an hour from my time!  I went from
1067th place to 150th out of 1800 riders.  It's without a doubt, the
most physically and mentally demanding race I've ever done.  I'm
having a blast racing mountain bikes, plus it's great training.  This
fall I'm hoping to try a cyclocross race.

I've been spending a lot of time on my computer finalizing snocross
gear design and graphics.  Snocross is going to be here before we
know it!  It's been raining a lot and is getting cold fast.  It looks
like we might get our first snow this weekend.  Hopefully, we'll get
dumped on so we don't have to travel so far to do pre-season
testing.  I have a practice sled ready to go so bring on the snow!

Have fun and drink Monster!
Tucker.

Whats up guys,

I had a really cool weekend I wanted to tell you about it….

I got a phone call from Mirraco bikes saying there was aI ticket to Canada to cheak out a bike shop and ride with the locals if I wanted it and of course im not going to say no to that.

Friday I was packed and flying to Canada but of course leaving Greenville where it was hot as I only took a small vans hoodie which might have been the biggest mistake ever because when I got there it was almost snowing. Met up with Mike Russell (a rad sales guy from mirraco) and we went to the local pub.

Saturday we went to united cycles shop which might be the biggest bike shop in the world id never seen a shop close to any thing like this one. Me and mike got the grand tour which took about an hour because of the size and rad things to check out. To try an explain how big this shop is they have over 60 employees, and 3 stores tall.

I really look up to lance Armstrong and to my amazment they had one of his bikes and a wall of trek bikes in every colour. Plus all the new mirraco bikes which look soooo sweet. They set up a ramps out side and put on a cool jam so I got to ride but the cold was keeping me running in side ever 5 mins hahaha

At the end of the day I gave away my bike to a kid who had just had his stole from him and the shop to us to KEG for the best steak dinner and then me and mike went to a locals house for some dice were i lost all of mike canadan money and a drum sessh before flying back to Greenville.
I had so much fun and would like to thank everyone who helped me out getting over there and all the locals for showing me a fun time.

Thanks see you next year
ryan

In addition to its presenting sponsorship role, Monster Energy also features two of the world’s top IJSBA stars in defending Pro Runabout champ Craig Warner and former World champs Chris MacCluggage and Dustin Farthing, along with South African racer Dustin Motjouris.

“For years, Monster Energy Drink has been the beverage of choice for participants in the sport of PWC racing,” said IJSBA’s Scott Frazier. “Thousands of spectators and participants flock to the Monster rig the second it pulls into the site at the Lake Havasu World Championships event each year. Monster’s involvement is a real opportunity for the racers and spectators to connect with one of their favorite producers.”

Frazier continued: “The excitement and enthusiasm that Monster brings with its trucks, stage, Monster Girls and free sampling takes our already popular event to new heights and is a treat to everyone involved. IJSBA is very grateful to Monster Energy Drink for participating in the 2009 quakysense World Finals at Lake Havasu.”
