This is the event I worked all season for. If I made it through this I could go to Pomona, CA, the hallowed ground of NHRA Drag racing. Granted Motorcycle drag racers are the red-headed step children of any form of racing, but all the same, going to Pomona would be nice.
The races started on 10/12/06. I drove from Atlanta to Valdosta just in time to get in one time run. I cut a .002 light and ran a 6.330 in the 1/8th. This was the best 1/8th I have ever run on my bike. The first race was a gamblers race just to get in the mood for the next few days of racing. Unfortunately, I did not do very well and got knocked out in the 1st round.
The first thing I noticed in this race was that I was the only bike without a wheelie bar in the whole group. Furthermore, I was one of only a handful, that did not have full electronics on my bike. This was kind of the equivalent of shooting a rifle 300 yards at a target with or without a scope. Sure, you could hit the target with either rifle, it is just a question of how many times without missing.
On 10/13/06 the "Race of the Champions" was held. This race only had the racers who won the individual track championships. Myself, being one of those few, was to race. Out of 19 bikes I came in 6th. Could have made it into the next level if I would not have launched my front wheel off the ground in 2nd gear at about 100 mph.
On 10/14/06 was the race for the best track as a team and the winners that would be going to Pomona. For every person on your team that won a round, your home track got a point. I was able to bring a point home before getting knocked out in the 2nd round. Once again a light front end was the culprit. Wheelie bars will be the next addition. Overall Atlanta Dragway came in 4th place.
This was a fantastic event for me in the fact that I never thought I would make it in my first season of racing. Next year will tell if it was beginners luck.
I still want to go to Pomona.
