Nico Izzi is gearing up for his second Supercross season with Rockstar/Makita/Suzuki with a new number, a fresh battle plan, and more intense training regiment. TWMX caught up with the new number 20 to find out a little more about his preparation for the upcoming season.

You’re about to enter your second Supercross season. What is your approach into the season, and how does it differ from your rookie year?
I think I am coming in stronger; I have been training a lot harder for sure. I am trying to learn from my mistakes last year, so I can go to the East Coast and put the hammer down.

Last year, you had the speed and the aggression, but would you say you weren’t as physically prepared as you would have liked?
I just wasn’t fit enough, at least nowhere where I needed to be. I just sort of struggled all season. Once the season starts, it’s near impossible to make huge gains. I just tried to make the best of what I had. But I am used to winning, so I am training harder and looking to win a championship.

Since you ran a few nationals before Supercross last year, you had the opportunity to run a two-digit number last season. Instead you chose to run 341. Why?
I could have run 54, but I like 341. When I was an amateur, I ran 34 the whole time. I decided I wanted to hold onto that a little longer, ya know, and just add the one. This year, though, I am pumped to run a low number. I like 20, it looks good on the bike.

Since the ’08 and ’09 RM-Z250 are pretty much the same, save for the yellow front number plate, are you making any substantial changes for this season?
Last year my bike was good. But this year, I am going a lot faster, so there are some changes. I think my suspension will be completely different; it’ll be stiffer to handle the whoops. With the new sound rules, I will be running different exhausts. We still have a lot of motor stuff to try.

Now that you have a professional season under your belt, has testing come a little easier this year?
I actually tested a lot as an amateur, so I was pretty used to it coming in. Many amateurs just run what is given to them, but I tested a lot.

Where will you spend your winter?
I would like to stay out here (California) for testing, but I’m not sure yet. I have a beautiful place in Georgia with a nice Supercross track. Its nice to be away from it all out there, too; but it’s still up in the air right now.

What are your goals for Supercross?
I want to win some races and be in the hunt for a championship. If I am physically fit, I think I can do it.

Murrieta, CA – The most popular AMA Supercross exhibition race, the KTM Junior Supercross Challenge (KJSC), will come to an end after twelve illustrious years.

The conclusion of the highly-successful twelve-year program was appropriately celebrated at the US Open in Las Vegas, NV October 10-11, 2008. The US Open served as a battleground for the KJSC Champions from each of the 2008 Monster Energy® AMA Supercross, an FIM World Championship, events to match-up for a final round aboard the KTM 50 SX machines. “There was no better way to say farewell to this program than by letting this year’s champions give the fans one more race in the two-day Vegas finale,” commented KJSC Coordinator Devin Mitchell.

The KJSC Program was started in 1997 as a collaboration between KTM Motorsports and Feld Motor Sports. Starting out with one box van and two mechanics, the program has grown in popularity and size to help over 230 boys and girls live their dream under the KTM Factory semi each season.

Over 3,000 young boys and girls have participated in the KJSC Program since its start at the LA Coliseum in 1997. Many of today’s professional riders have participated in the famous program, including: Mike and Jeff Alessi, Blake and Tyler Wharton, Zach Osborne, Ryan Dungey, Drew Gosselaar, Jacqueline Strong, Michael Hall and many more.

The KJSC drew record attention in 2003 when Caden Hadley became the first KJSC rider to jump a double at the Salt Lake City AMA Supercross event. Its popularity continued to grow each year, proven by the exponential growth in applicants that applied from all over the world in hopes of being selected for one of the AMA Supercross rounds.

“The KJSC Program helped spread happiness in the lives of many motocross families. KTM was proud to have hosted this program and provide an unforgettable experience to these families and hopes that the memories made were everlasting for those that have been fortunate enough to be involved,” commented KTM Vice President of Event Promotions Selvaraj Narayana.

“KTM would like to thank Feld Motor Sports, which without, the program would not have been made possible. Its hard work and contributions to the success of this program are unmatched. KTM is grateful for its relationship with Feld Motor Sports which will continue in a professional racing capacity as well as a sponsor of Monster Energy AMA Supercross, an FIM World Championship,” commented Kurt Nicoll, KTM Director of Racing.

The KJSC Program has had many loyal and generous sponsors that have contributed to the success of the program during its twelve-year run. KTM sincerely thanks: Scott USA, Michelin, Thor, MSF Dirtbike Schools, OGIO, M2R, FMF, Powersport Grafx and Leatt Brace.

Lastly, as this program comes to an end, KTM would like to acknowledge Selvaraj Narayana for his commitment to the success of this program and his passion and commitment to the future of the sport.

The 11th running of the Troy Lee Designs/Elrod Racing’s A Day in the Dirt is drawing near, and you are anything like the staff at TransWorld Motocross, you are chomping at the bit for some amazing Grand Prix racing. We caught up with Kenny Alexander, the mastermind of the A Day in the Dirt event to chat about the Thanksgiving weekend race…

Has being injured affected your motivation toward the A Day in the Dirt event?

That’s a tough question, because if I was racing the track would be more my style so I am going to make it tough for you guys this year [laughs]. I can focus a little more on it but at the same time it’s hard because, of course, I love to race. I focus on A Day in the Dirt and Mammoth; those are the two races a year that I do. Hopefully I will be healed up for Mammoth, but for now I hope to just give you guys a great place to come out and have fun.

A Day in the Dirt has moved back to L.A. County Raceway last year, and it was a far cry from the less-exciting track most of us remember. For us, last year’s ADITD layout was one of the most fun tracks we’ve ever had a chance to ride. Do people realize how great this track is now?

If you haven’t been out here in a couple years, it’s a huge difference. There is a 70 foot hole in the ground that is part of the track, and this year, we plan to incorporate six uphills and downhills, and we are going to have some asphalt again for some high speed and a chance to rest and, of course, the top section will be very much a motocross track.

How many racers do you expect to see this year?
Actually, all we can handle is about 900 entries, due to the structure of the classes. Most people enter two to four races, so it’s a packed weekend. All together, there are about 300 race entries.

What makes A Day in the Dirt different from other races?

What makes this event so unique is the comradery. You get to engage with friends you may not see very often, or perhaps you may race guys you haven’t raced against in twenty or thirty years. Last year, Donnie Hansen even raced. I don’t think that guy has raced in fifteen years. Guys like John DeSoto and Ricky Johnson come out and race, and the rest of us get to be out on the track with them at the same time. That’s what is so special about this race. Just when you think you are going fast, Jeff Ward blasts by you like you’re standing still; it’s a pretty cool feeling.

Speaking of experiences like that; last year, Swap decided late in the weekend that he wanted to ride the final race of the weekend, the Coup de Grace. When he went to go buy an entry, he heard, “You can buy mine for a dollar.” When he turned around Micky Dymond, one of Swap’s childhood idols, was standing behind him ready to pass off his race entry.

That’s why it’s so unique, our heroes come out to race, and now their kids are coming out to race too. It’s a big family; generation after generation. 11 years ago we tried to put something together that would celebrate the family of motocross and it worked.

For someone who doesn’t know, how does A Day in the Dirt work?

The track is usually about two miles long, with about a three-and-a-half to four-minute lap time. There are about 120 people out on the track at the same time, so there are staggered starts, and most races about 45 minutes long. There are some team races that are and hour and a half and then we have the Coup de Grace, which is about a two-hour race. We have electronic scoring, so you have to stop and have your helmet scanned every lap, and there is a clock that displays time and place when you get scanned, so you know exactly where you are.

The common misconception is that A Day in the Dirt is a private, or invite-only event, but entries are still open, right?

For years, people have thought that you have to be invited to this. The first year, we did send out an invite, but everyone we invited had friends and family that wanted to be a part of it too, so we opened it up to everybody. Now it is one of the most anticipated Grand Prix in Southern California.

CLICK HERE for a look at last year’s A Day in the Dirt track.

It seems like the Supercross season is approaching at a rapid pace and, with that said, we’ve been spending a lot of our time at the local Supercross test tracks catching up with riders and, in some cases, riders who find themselves on a new team. For instance, we dropped by the Kawasaki test facility not too long ago to catch up with Ryan Morais, who is one of Pro Circuit’s latest recruits, to see how things are going for him and his new team.

You spent a couple of years at Yamaha of Troy, so how has the transition from the Yamaha to the Kawasaki been treating you?
It has been good. I haven’t had a ton of time on the bike, but I feel pretty comfortable. Obviously when you ride a Mitch Payton bike the thing is going to be fast, you know? Jake (Weimer) and myself are both new over here, so it’s cool to be working with new people.

What are you hoping to accomplish on the new team?

I’d really like to win a championship. Not only do I want to win one for the team, but I also want to win one for myself, too. My biggest regret is still stalling my bike at the Detroit Supercross on 2007. I’m sure I would’ve won that title if it weren’t for that mistake. Not only that, but I also want to prove to people that I can ride outdoors as well. A lot of people probably think that I can only ride Supercross, but I do enjoy the outdoors, too.

What do you think your biggest challenge is going to be in order to accomplish your goal of winning a Supercross title?

I need to stay healthy. That’s always been my biggest problem: injuries. I got hurt coming into the ’08 season, which then set the way for the rest of the year. I need to do my best to avoid getting hurt, which is almost impossible, you know? But, I believe I’ll be ready to go once January comes around. I’m definitely excited for the upcoming year.

I know that you decided to stay home the weekend of the U.S. Open of Supercross, so what exactly did you during that weekend?
Well, Hannah (my girlfriend) wanted to go to the U.S. Open really bad, and I wanted to stay home for the weekend and relax, but she had rearranged her work schedule so that we could spend the weekend in Vegas. Thankfully, I was able to talk her out of it, but I think she was a bit mad about it. However, I was planning on popping the question that weekend, so I thought doing that in Vegas would be a bit corny, you know? Eventually I asked her to marry me and she said yes. Afterwards she admitted that that was much better than going to Vegas (laughs).

From here until January, what’s the plan?
I am going to work my butt off during the off-season. I want to have everything dialed in come A1. Being able to ride for Mitch and the guys at Pro Circuit is a big honor, so I intend on working hard to accomplish my goals and prove to everybody that I am still capable of winning.
(Cowling)

In other Supercross news, you are all aware, by now, of factory Yamaha’s Josh Hill’s shoulder injury. Althoug he didn’t break anything, Hill did tear labrum in his right shoulder. Yeah, we didn’t know what that was either, so we looked it up. Basically, your shoulder joint has a cuff of cartilage called a labrum that forms a cup for the end of the arm bone (humerus) to move within. The labrum circles the shallow shoulder socket to make the socket deeper. This cuff of cartilage makes the shoulder joint much more stable, and allows for a very wide range of movements. So, he tore that thing.

“It was the dumbest crash ever,” said Hill of his spill at Milestone MX Park. “I was actually doing some endurance testing, riding a bike that was not even set up for me. I had to put like three hours on it and I was just riding through the whoops at Milestone and I hit a rock and went over the bars.
“I have never hurt my shoulders before, so I got up and told myself I would be okay. In the truck on the way home, though, it really started to hurt and I figured I’d better go get checked out. I basically destroyed the labrum in my right shoulder and I am having surgery on Tuesday morning to have it repaired.
“The doctors say that at the earliest, I will be back on a bike in two and a half months, but no sooner. I am bummed because I was just starting to get into it, and feeling really good on a Supercross track.”

Get well soon, Josh!

Vienna, Austria - KTM, the Austrian motorcycle manufacturer, presents the prototype of a race-ready Sport Enduro with electromotor, the result of a cooperative research project with arsenal research.

KTM and the engineering experts at arsenal research illustrate that fun-riding and environmental sustainability are not mutually exclusive with the latest development of the zero emission motorcycle prototype. The light, sporty and powerful zero emission motorcycle complies with the KTM sport-oriented, racing philosophy while ensuring an emission and practically noise free bike with an electric motor.

The development of the highly integrated motor was made possible through the expertise of arsenal research. The foundation stone for the bike was built through the commitment of KTM to stay innovative in the off-road motorcycle industry while also finding solutions that align the core business of KTM to important world-wide situations regarding topics such as “mobility,” “environment” and “energy.”

The KTM zero emission motorcycle embodies the typical KTM “Ready to Race” philosophy. The KTM zero emission motorcycle features the most modern construction characteristics and is fitted throughout with high quality vehicle components which have been a standard on KTM motorcycles since the beginning.

Thanks to the intelligent control technology and the most up-to-date energy management, the 90 kg light prototype zero emission motorcycle has a performance that rivals a light Enduro with a combustion engine. Apart from the very low weight, it is the engine’s significantly spontaneous development of torque that is responsible for the distinct dynamic of the zero emission motorcycle. The zero emission motorcycle completely does away with familiar motorcycle components such as exhaust, tank, air box or clutch.

Following promising tests and the numerous insights that resulted from the cooperation with arsenal research, the decision was made to make the transition from a pure research project to a development project for a series machine. KTM places the highest priority on the introduction of a sustainable emission-free electro motorcycle and will continue to intensify its development partnership with arsenal research. At this time, no statement has been released as to when the motorcycle will be brought into production.

DI Harald Plöckinger, Board Member of KTM Power Sports AG
“As an innovative and market leading company, KTM must also take up the task of testing out and developing new engine formats for our sports motorcycles. The concept of the zero emission motorcycle combines the well known KTM competence with new and highly interesting motor technology. With an emission free motorcycle we see a big opportunity to make Enduro sport available to a broader and completely new target group in the medium and long term by giving them access to a completely new sporting trend. The KTM Zero Emission Motorcycle will allow for riding in more areas, even densely populated areas, without coming into conflict with existing restrictions. Testing with the first prototype already reveals the big potential of this cooperative development project with arsenal research.”

DI Franz Pirker, Monitoring, Energy and Engine Technology, arsenal research
“Alternative vehicle concepts demand new research efforts and an appropriately developed research structure. The use of the latest battery technology, the integration of a highly efficient

electric motor as well as the introduction of the drive components in a highly integrated drive system forms the basis of the realization of the motorcycle concept. By the direct linking of a hardware prototype in the virtual simulation environment, real drive cycles can often be arbitrarily completed without having to build components into the test vehicle. This so-called Hardware-in-the-loop simulation makes an extremely time- and cost efficient development possible during which the motor, energy storage and power electronics can be optimized as well as being able to match the drive strategies and energy management without much expenditure in this phase.”

Dr. Andreas Dorda, Federal Minister of Transport, Innovation and Technology
“For the Federal Ministry for Transport, Innovation and Technology (BMVIT), the development of alternative drive systems is, from a transport and environmental policy perspective as well as that of business location and industry policy, central in securing the competitiveness of the Austrian automobile industry through the promotion of research and in lowering the emission of pollutants, noise and greenhouse gases through innovative technical development.
As the technological trend in vehicle technology is clearly going in the direction of electrification of engines, the development of the KTM Zero-Emission Motorcycle by KTM and arsenal research with support from the BMVIT in the  A3-Technology program is an important showcase project for Austrian engineering competence, with promising perspectives for introduction onto the market both in terms of strategy and industrial policy.”

About KTM Power Sports AG
KTM, founded in 1953, is the second largest European motorcycle manufacturer specializing in “Ready to Race” on and off road motorcycles and ATVs.

Proven successes in worldwide competition are embodied into the design and function of each KTM race machine. KTM has built a reputation for high-quality premium race ready machines suitable for on and off road race competition and recreation.  With more than 150 World Championships and counting, the technology, design and performance of KTM continues to race past the competition time and again.

TransWorld Motocross’ first Girl’s Learn to Ride day is in the books!

Thursday, October 23rd marked the first ever TWMX Girl’s Learn to Ride day at the Honda Rider Education Center in Colton, CA. The day was split up into 3 different groups, and girls from every part of the motocross industry came out to get dirty and learn how to ride a dirt bike like a pro. Although the class wasn’t taught by current Honda pros riders like Andrew Short and Ivan Tedesco, the Red Rider Ranch brought out another pro (one with the necessary patience needed to teach 40 industry girls how to ride), 9x Women’s World Champion, Mercedes Gonzales-Natvig. Mercedes was accompanied by her top level training staff, Charity, Nick, and Eddy to help guide the industry girls through their dirt bike boot camp.

The course was split up to take the girls through all the basics of being on a bike and then were given the chance to apply what they had learned on their trail course at the facility. The session includes: riding posture, safety techniques, starting, stopping, quick turns, swerving, turning techniques, and riding over obstacles. In short, they covered basically everything you need to know as a first timer on a dirt bike.

All in all, the day was a huge success and now the motocross industry girls are one step closer to becoming the next Ashley Fiolek. Ok, maybe not… but it would be nice to be on the cover of the December issue of Transworld Motocross like Ashley Fiolek right? Either way, we already know that motocross is on the minds of most of you guys and now, thanks to the first ever TWMX Girl’s Learn to Ride day, it’s on the minds of many girls as well.

Wish you too could be taught how to ride by the pros at Honda? Well, rest assured, you can. To learn more about the Honda Rider Education Center and to enroll in a class, call (909) 430-3020. The Honda Rider Education Center is located at 1301 Via Venita, Colton, CA 92324

The old school craze is back in a major way for 2009, and as one of the originators in the gear market, MSR has arguably some of the coolest retro duds available. If you remember, though, this gear was actually worn by Grant Langston and Nick Wey at the 2008 Anaheim II throwback race. GL wore the blue colorway pictured here, while NYK sported the orange and yellow set. If anything, wearing this gear will not only make you look cool, it might just help you remember the good old days. And for some of the younger riders out there, that’s a good thing.

“Nachooooooooo!” Come on, you don’t have to be of Mexican descent to have that inner burning desire to be a famous luchadore. Who wouldn’t want to wear a mask and tights and wrestle dudes in front of a ton of 9. screaming people… Okay, we wouldn’t want to either, but we do dig the Lucha style, and TLD has harnessed it nicely for 2009.

If you go down as much as the staff at TransWorld Motocross, then you have gone through your fair share of broken control levers. Luckily, Sunline has all of us covered. Grant Langston has always been one of our favorite riders and guests, but we wanted to get the Zulu Warrior back on so his fans can get an update on the man underneath the helmet. Grant has been plagued by medical issues concerning his vision for quite some time and we wanted to sidestep the speculation and rumors and hear the latest in his own words.

JGR’s Cody Cooper has made a substantial impact on American motocross in his relatively short career over here. After surviving and enduring living with Ben Townley, Cody has found a new home in North Carolina with one of the premiere teams in our sport. Jeremy Albrecht and the gang saw the hard work and determination from Cody that produced some impressive and consistent results that were rewarded with this ride. We will break out our New Zealand decoder ring for his interview tonight.

Our core fans know how important motocross is to DMXS and our detailed mission statement reflects the same. Alright, we really don’t have an official mission statement, but we could if we really wanted to, and saving and improving our beloved outdoors would be at the top. Thankfully, the folks at MX Sports and their allies are taking the appropriate steps in that direction with a bold new agenda and planned changes for the future. Davey Coombs will join us to break down the plans for 2009 and beyond.

Factory Kawasaki’s Timmy Ferry was a guest on our very first show almost eight years ago and he still returns our phone calls for some reason. Red Dog has a great family, Factory ride, and is a Motocross de Nations hero. I would be remiss if I didn’t think we had at least a little something to do with all that. We will discuss in great detail our influence on his incredible career.

Pro-Circuit is the standard in our sport for a reason. Mitch Payton and the team give 100% in everything they do. When a PC ride became available late in the silly-season, there was no shortage of willing riders that would give their left cashew for a shot at that ride. Mitch is well known for being an independent thinker and trends are not what he gauges a decision on. He often looks to the heart and character of a rider more that just raw speed or short-lived results. I was not surprised when he chose Ryan Morais as his rider for those qualities alone. He has proven he has the speed, but he has also shown his character and sportsmanship in the best and worst of times. Ryan is a great fit for that team and will join us with his thoughts on it tonight.

Those Blose brothers are a resilient bunch. After all their respectable results over the years, I wonder why anyone is ever surprised by their speed when they show up to race. Chris Blose was lighting up Vegas until an untimely crash dropped him back, but once again he showed that he belonged there. Chris will give us a summary of his crazy US Open weekend and tell us who would win an all-out fist fight with his brother Michael.
