AURORA, Ill. (December 29, 2008) – The 2009 Monster Energy® AMA Supercross, an FIM World Championship, kicks off at Angel Stadium in Anaheim, Calif., this Saturday for the first of three races at the famed facility. AMA Supercross champion Chad Reed will defend his championship against the top racers in the world, including James Stewart, who returns from injury, Kevin Windham, who was runner-up last year and Ryan Villopoto, who is one of the world’s top young racers.

Reed, of
Dade City, Fla., dominated in Anaheim last year, winning all three races en route to his second AMA Supercross title. The three-race sweep marked the first time the Rockstar/Makita Suzuki rider had won at the legendary Angel Stadium since 2004. He joins former AMA Supercross class champion Stewart as the only riders to sweep all three races in Anaheim.

GEICO Powersports Honda’s
Windham, of Centreville, Miss., chased Reed to the final race of the season in 2008 and finished second overall in the standings. The veteran earned four main event wins and eight podium finishes, marking the third time in his career that he finished runner-up in the championship.

Team San Manuel Yamaha’s Stewart, who missed most of the 2008 Monster Energy® Supercross season due to a knee injury, will challenge Reed for the number-one plate. On the way to winning his first AMA Supercross championship in 2007, Stewart, of
Haines City, Fla., captured 13 wins and two additional podium appearances.

“Defending your championship is harder than winning because you have guys that are really hungry to take it from you,” said Stewart. ”You have to work double-time just to stay ahead of the game.”

Former AMA Supercross Lites class champion Villopoto, of
Poulsbo, Wash., makes his AMA Supercross class debut at Angel Stadium. The Monster Energy Kawasaki rider is a three-time AMA Motocross Lites class champion and has the speed to run with the elite riders in this class.

“I don’t think it’s out of reach to win the championship, but it’s definitely going to be tough,” Villopoto added. “I might be asking a lot, though. You have to look at being consistent and that’s what I want to do. If I can be consistent, I can maybe get second or third.”

Also returning to the class in 2009 are Red Bull Honda’s Davi Millsaps, of
Cairo, Ga., who won main events at Atlanta’s Georgia Dome and Detroit’s Ford Field, and Factory Yamaha’s Josh Hill, of Yoncalla, Ore., who won the main event at Minneapolis’ Metrodome.

Rockstar/Makita Suzuki’s Ryan Dungey, of Belle Plaine,
Minn., was runner up in the 2008 Western Regional AMA Supercross Lites class and won two of the three main events in Anaheim last year. YOT, Boost Mobile, Monster Energy, AM/PM’s Jason Lawrence, of Carlsbad, Calif., won the third and final race last year in Anaheim, eventually earning the class championship. Like it has shown in years past, this season’s AMA Supercross Lites class is expected to be stacked with talent.

“The field is so deep in the lites class that I could probably name off a couple dozen guys that are going to be fast next year,” said Dungey. “I’m just going to train this off season and work toward being 100 percent for the start of the season. We’ll see who is lined up on the gate at that time.”

The first AMA Supercross race was held in
Anaheim on December 4, 1976, and Marty Smith won on a Honda. Ricky Carmichael and Jeremy McGrath share the all-time AMA Supercross class win record at Angel Stadium with eight wins each. In the Western Regional AMA Supercross Lites class, three riders have swept all three races at Angel Stadium: Villopoto, Ivan Tedesco and Ernesto Fonseca. Stewart, Windham and McGrath are the only riders in history to win in the AMA Supercross Lites class and AMA Supercross class at Anaheim.

For some, one of the least desirable tasks is cleaning the throttle housing. It may seem like a tedious process that creates unnecessary frustration, but it’s not as complex as it may sound. With that being said, we met up with Red Bull Honda’s Craig Behl so he could show you five basic steps to maintaining your throttle housing with relative ease.

Tools required: 8mm T-handle, 8mm open-ended wrench, contact/rust cleaner, cleaning brush.

1. “Using a standard 8mm wrench, unscrew the two bolts that hold the two sides of the throttle housing together. Disconnect the throttle cables from the throttle tube and slide the tube off of the bar.”

2. ” With the throttle removed, take some contact cleaner and spray it on the right side of the handle bar. Once you’ve done that, remember to take a shop towel and wipe away any excess residue.”

3. “If you have any access to an air compressor, blow out as much of the dirt and contact cleaner as possible. It’s critical that you’re as thorough as possible. If you’re not, that can cause your throttle to stick while you’re riding and you may wind up suffering a pretty bad wreck.”

4. ” Once you’ve cleaned the throttle housing and the handlebar, spray a light coat of lube onto the handlebar and to the inside of the throttle housing. Be careful not to spray too much lube to the throttle pieces. If there is too much lubricant, it can seep under your grip an loosen its adhesion to the throttle tube.”

5. “With everything clean and properly lubed, slide the throttle housing back onto the hanldebar. Reconnect the throttle cable ends and attach the housing slides back over the bar. Once you’ve got everything where it should be, give the bike some gas (keeping the engine off, of course), making sure that it doesn’t stick and it springs back. It should be one, easy motion. If you’ve got that, you’re all set.”

- Sacramento, Ca. - When most people think of California State Parks, they envision tall redwood trees or long sandy beaches. They usually don’t think of dirt bikes or four-wheel drive vehicles. But these too can be found in State Parks. In fact, the Off-Highway Motor Vehicle Recreation (OHMVR) Division of California State Parks is widely recognized as a leader in off-highway vehicle recreation management. Exercising this leadership role, California State Parks approached Quantya, a leading electric motorcycle manufacturer, to partner with the OHMVR Division to promote electric off-highway vehicles.

In order to meet the state’s long-term renewable energy and climate change goals, the OHMVR Division supports the development of alternative fuel vehicles for the off-road industry. Recognizing the budding clean-tech boom in California, Quantya has been seeking a way to introduce their new eco-friendly motorcycle to the State. So, the two organizations decided to partner in furthering their mutual goals. Quantya agreed to provide California State Parks with an electric motorcycle for two months at no cost. In exchange, California State Parks agreed to provide direct feedback on the bike’s performance capabilities and relevance as a patrol vehicle. Both parties see this exchange as an opportunity to highlight the advances in electric technology for off-highway vehicles which will ultimately help to reduce the nation’s dependence on fossil fuels.

The new Quantya Dual Sport “Strada” was developed as a patrol vehicle for law enforcement. “This was a great opportunity for us to learn from State Parks widely recognized experience, and to gain direct feedback on how we can enhance our vehicle’s functionality” said David Lodermeier, Technical Services Manager for Quantya USA. The bike’s electronic design and silent operation make it perfect to ride in natural settings without causing disturbance and for campground patrols.

To commence the evaluation, State Park Rangers at Hollister Hills State Vehicular Recreation Area took possession of the new Quantya “Strada” on August 8th, said John Vallett, Chief Ranger, “… the bike has been perfect for us because we can ride through the park with very little disruption to wildlife, or patrol the campgrounds at night and not disturb guests who are sleeping; while at the same time can have the confidence in the performance of the bike when it is called upon.”

California State Parks is assessing Quantya’s electric motorcycle because they anticipate it will reduce their operational fuel costs Quantya hopes the feedback and exposure from the relationship with California State Parks will spark interest from other state and federal agencies who are interested in supplementing their existing fleet with proven electric vehicle technology.

About Quantya
“Swiss Electric Movement” is the result of eco-conscious motorcycle enthusiasts who started the development and distribution of zero-emission high performance electric motorcycles. Quantya USA, part of the Swiss Electric Movement, wants to bring the massive success of the Quantya electric motorcycles to the US market. Quantya USA, the exclusive importer and distributor for the USA and Canada, is located in Syosset, NY and more information can be found at www.quantya.us.

AURORA, Ill. (December 18, 2009) – Feld Motor Sports announced today that six AMA Supercross legends have been selected to assist in the design process for six 2009 Monster Energy® AMA Supercross, an FIM World Championship, race tracks.

Seven-time AMA Supercross champion Jeremy McGrath will help design the Anaheim 3 race track at Angel Stadium. Two-time AMA Supercross champion Ricky Johnson will help design the course at San Diego’s Qualcomm Stadium. Five-time AMA Supercross champion Ricky Carmichael will design the track inside Atlanta’s Georgia Dome. Multi-time AMA National champion Mike LaRocco will help design the track at Indianapolis’ Lucas Oil Stadium. Three-time AMA Supercross champion Jeff Stanton will help design the track at Toronto’s Rogers Centre and AMA Supercross Lites class champion Travis Pastrana will help design the track at St. Louis’ Edward Jones Dome.

“We begun using rider-inspired track designs in 2008 season. For 2009, we wanted to put a different spin on our rider-inspired track designs,” said Dave Prater, director of supercross, Feld Motor Sports. “We asked six former AMA Supercross superstars to give us their personal input on specific track designs. In an effort to create variety, we chose riders with distinctly different riding styles. It’s going to be interesting to see how the different tracks fit each rider’s personality.”

Carmichael, who is tied with McGrath for the all-time win record in Atlanta, meticulously designed his track and looks forward to watching an epic race unfold inside the Georgia Dome.

“Designing the race track at the Georgia Dome is a special opportunity because I have enjoyed so much success there in both the AMA Supercross class and AMA Supercross Lites class,” said Carmichael.

The name Daniel McCoy may not ring a bell to some; however, McCoy has been one of the top riders in his home of Australia since turning pro in 2003. McCoy, who was riding for the Woodstock Honda Thor racing team in ’08, has finally made the journey across the Atlantic to join the MotoConcepts Racing team for the 2009 Supercross and motocross series. McCoy rounded out the 2008 Australian Supercross series in fourth place and now has his sights set on tackling the American circuit aboard a CRF450R.

For those who are unfamiliar with your name, tell us a little bit about yourself.

First of all, I am from Australia. I’ve raced professionally over there for six years. I’ve ridden for a lot of the factory teams like Honda, KTM, and Yamaha. My main problem has been staying healthy throughout my professional career, however. I want to have a decent year in 2009 and move forward with my riding. I’ve always wanted to race here [America]; it’s always been a dream of mine. This team is quite professional, and they’ve given me an opportunity to race in the States. I haven’t ridden the bikes yet, but everybody is saying good things about them.

Will this be your first-ever experience racing in America?

I’ve done some little races over here like Mammoth. I’ve actually done that race twice. My good friend Timmy Weigand, who was my teammate on KTM in 2006, has been kind enough to allow me to stay with me when I’ve raced Mammoth.

As far as results are concerned, how have you faired in Australia?

I’ve had quite a few second and third place overall finishes in the Supercross championships back home. As far as the motocross series is concerned, I’ve had a lot of fourth and fifth place finishes. A lot of people oversee it, but the competition is really strong down there. The Supercross season that we just finished up had the likes of Chad Reed and Jay Marmont–who won the motocross series. I finished fourth overall in the Supercross series. It was good for me to have that series under my belt and then come over here, because it allows me to carry all of my momentum into Anaheim 1.

Word on the street is that you actually beat your fellow Aussie, Reed, at one of the rounds this year…

Yeah. I didn’t actually line up against him because it was one of those head-to-head races. It was a mud race, and I actually lined up against Jeremy McGrath and needed to beat McGrath to go into the main event. The other guys racing to get into the main even were Reed and Marmont, but Reed crashed, which meant Jay and I were going into the main event. Technically, I didn’t beat him straight up, but at the same time I did because I made it all the way to the main event (laughs).

Have you had any opportunities to spend time racing with Reed, Dan Reardon, and those guys who’ve found success in America?

No. Not really. Reed is never home, and even when he is home we live three hours away from each other, so it isn’t often that we ride/race together.

What are your goals for 2009?

I really want to stay healthy and be able to compete in all of the Supercross races and all of the outdoor races. I want to qualify for each and every main event and be a top 10 guy. Even to have a top five finish would be unbelievable. However, I’ve never raced Supercross or motocross over here, so I have no idea where I fit into everything or where I’ll actually end up. I’m just going into the season blindfolded, really.

What are your thoughts on the American series?

I think it’s awesome. It’s twice as big over here than it is in Australia. From the fans to the tracks, everything is way above what we have. With that said, the Supercross series we just wrapped up was the best one we’ve ever had. The tracks were really good! Mark Barnett actually built the first couple tracks. I know things are going to be a lot different over here, but I am excited to kick things off in a couple of weeks!

Swap spent a full day with Monster Energy Kawasaki’s Timmy Ferry at his home in Florida last week, and so he shot a lot of video. So much, in fact, that he decided to provide all the film critics out there with the best of both worlds. While some like the raw, full-speed live action and scorn at the creative-perspective, soundtracked, 60-frames-per-second video, others study the slow-motion and bob their heads to some hip-hop.

We like both, so you decide. Prop the video you like best.

Here’s Timmy, at 60 fps, to some Paul Wall.

RUMOR OF THE DAY

The 250 class of the AMA Outdoor Nationals is shaping up like a true 250cc class, from sources within the industry. Strokes will NOT matter. Also, rumor has it that U.K.-transplant and MDK/KTM rider Tommy Searle will run a 250 two-stroke. How rad would that be?!

ASTERISK CHARITY RIDE

This past Saturday was the Asterisk Mobile Medical Center Charity Mountain Bike Ride in Vail Lake, CA. The event was put on by Mike Sleeter with the intentions of giving a little back to Doc Bondar and the Asterisk’s crew for all of their hard work. “Doc Bodnar and his crew have helped me out more than enough at all of the races, and I wanted to pay them back somehow, so I decided to organize this event,” said Sleeter. Doc Bodnar, Rookie Sorenson, Justin Brayton, Erin Normoyle, Victor Sheldon, and Daniel Reardon were just a few of the participants on hand. Our good buddy Will Topete was on hand on Saturday and was kind enough to share some of his photos of the event.

AURORA, Ill. (December 12, 2009) – Feld Motor Sports announced today that Casey Edmondson, of Gilbert, Ariz., was selected to be Miss Supercross and will begin her 2009 Monster Energy® AMA Supercross, an FIM World Championship, campaign at Angel Stadium in Anaheim, Calif., January 3.

Edmondson, whose scholastic ambition is to obtain a double major in fitness and public relations, is currently enrolled at Chandler-Gilbert Community College. A huge fan of the sport, Edmondson grew up around supercross/motocross and is also a huge fan of her brother Cody, who is a successful amateur motocross racer. Along with her family, Edmondson travels to all of the top amateur races to show her support and passion for the sport.

“Racing is a part of my life and becoming the 2009 Miss Supercross is a great way to show my passion for the sport,” said Edmondson. “I am a very family-oriented person and racing has allowed me to connect family with my favorite sport. I always knew I wanted to be involved with supercross and winning the Miss Supercross contest has given me the opportunity.”

After campaigning for the position over the past two months, Edmondson was shocked when she received the news.

“When I received the call to say that I won the Miss Supercross contest, I hit the floor,” added Edmondson. “I have never had anything so exciting happen to me in my life. This is going to be a great experience, and I look forward to meeting the great fans of the sport.”

With an array of great experiences ahead of her, Edmondson says that it’s the highly anticipated Anaheim 1 race that she looks forward to.

“I have gone to every race in Phoenix since I was 9-years old, but I have never gone to Anaheim 1. I have taped it, watched it live on television, but I have never been there. This year is going to be so competitive with Ryan Villopoto moving up to the premier class and the new rule that allows the Lites class guys to race their bikes in the AMA Supercross class.”

For those who are unfamiliar with Sara Price, this is a good time to familiarize yourself with her name as she is the next big thing in women’s motocross. Price, who is a Southern California native, has spent a majority of her youth in the SoCal racing scene. However, in 2008, Price has won eight out of 12 races that she has entered, including Ponca City, Oak Hill, and the World Mini, just to name a few. For ‘09, though, a determined Price will be competing in her first-ever professional WMA series with the likes of Ashley Fiolek, Tarah Gieger, and Jessica Patterson. How does Price foresee her rookie season will go? “I’m going in there to win,” said a confident Price. So, with out further audue, meet Sara Price…

Give us a little background on your racing career and how you got your start.

I started racing when I was eight years old at Perris Raceway. I grew up doing a series there called the Hot Summer Nights. My brother grew up racing with Josh Grant and they actually got me into it. Before that, though, I used to race horses, and I also did show jumping. From there, my brother saw my potential and my dad had always wanted to get me on a dirt bike, but during that time I wanted nothing to do with motorcycles. My dad ended up getting me a dirt bike for Christmas, however, and ever since I threw my leg over a bike I’ve been hooked.

Did you really race and jump horses?

Yeah! I actually went to the California State Championships for horse jumping.

How did you get into that?

I used to live in Riverside, CA, but we eventually moved down to Canyon Lake, CA. When we moved to Canyon Lake, I had a friend who rode horses, and I decided to wonder over their one day and that’s how it all started. I still have a horse today.

Do you still have time to ride your horse, or is most of your time devoted to motocross and training?

These days I am souly focused on riding motocross, but during the days that I don’t ride my dirt bike, I’ll ride my horse.

When can we expect to see you line up for your first professional WMA National?

That will be on May 23rd at Glen Helen Raceway! I am pretty excited!

What are you hoping to accomplish in your first professional WMA season?

Obviously my goal is to go out there and win. However, I definitely want to be on the box every weekend and be one of the top women. I am not going out there to be a top five or top 10 girl… I am going into the season with the intentions of winning.

As far as training is concerned, what are you doing to prepare yourself for the season?

Right now I spend five days a week at the track training with Alan Georke. I also have a personal trainer for the gym when I go there, too. I spend every day training and preparing myself. I want to better myself all of the time and never settle.

Who do you consider to be your biggest threat in ’09?

Oh definitely Ashley Fiolek and Jessica Patterson…and Tarah Gieger! All of those top women have done so much for the sport, so it’ll be a really exciting season with some awesome racing.

I’ve had the opportunity of watching you ride out at Starwest a couple of times and you definitely have a riding style that you typically see of a guy. You have perfect form on the bike as well as a very aggressive riding style, whereas most girls do not have that style.

I definitely hear that from a lot of people (laughs). Growing up I’ve always been know for my attitude, and it’s not that I have a bad attitude, because I do have an awesome attitude; I just have a very edgy personality that is kind of aggressive, you know? I think that carries on over to my riding, and I really hate to be second best. With that said, it drives me to push myself and I am constantly pushing myself. Since I’ve grown up like that, I think it simply translates into my riding style and the way I sit on the bike.

Therefore we’ll see a lot of elbows flying and aggressive riding coming from you next year?

Oh you better believe it! I am not afraid, but I do know that I’ll have a hard time staying up top. Hopefully, though, I’ll be on the box.

Will you be rejoining Team Green Kawasaki in 2009?

Yeah! I actually just signed my contract. I’ll be with Monster Energy Kawasaki/Team Green.

Aside from wanting to win the WMA championship in 2009, what are some of your other goals and ambitions?

I will be doing X Games next year, but my big goal that I am going to be working on for the next two to three years is trying to qualify for a main event is Supercross. I am really good technical rider, and I feel like Supercross would definitely suit my style.

Have you had any opportunities to ride Supercross?

I haven’t had any real opportunities, but I have hopped on a Supercross track in the past. I ended up doing all of the jumps, but my mechanic had to pull me off the track because my bike wasn’t setup for Supercross (laughs). I had a blast, though; and I can’t wait for my opportunity to ride/race Supercross!

He started physical therapy just two weeks after his surgery and has been working out steadily since. He told us he felt good, and that he should be heading back to the Supercross track really soon. Billy Laninovich had a rather disappointing 2008 season thanks to some injuries and other bad luck. After missing half of the Supercross and outdoor season due to three herniated discs in is back, Laninovich made the jump from the Lites bike to the mighty KTM 450SX-F. After a slow start, Laninovich started creeping his was into the top-10 overall each weekend and started gaining some confidence. However, after the Washougal National, MDK/KTM informed Billy that he would be sitting out the remainder of the season. We caught up with Laninovich this afternoon to see what he’s been up to since the Washougal National and what his plans are for 2009.

Looking back on your season, how would you say things went?

My Supercross season didn’t start out too well. We had a few mud races, and I didn’t qualify for the first round and maybe even the second round. I was struggling a lot with my starts, but I was riding well. I had a pretty good pace going and a got a fourth at Anaheim III, which was my best finish in Supercross. At one of the East Cast races I decided to race the KTM 450SX-F. Unfortunately, I went over the bars in the first practice session and had a minor shoulder separation, so that put me out for a week. After that, I was only on the bike for a couple of days before I again crashed while riding at Perris Raceway. I knocked myself out and also had three herniated discs in my back, which put me out for three months. Only I had two weeks worth of riding under my belt before I came back to ride the outdoors, and I was really out of shape and didn’t want to go out there because I knew it wasn’t going to be good riding two 30 minute motos… I just wasn’t ready for that; however, everybody thought I should just race my way into shape. The first couple of races I struggled, but at Red Bud I finished 12th overall. My last race, which was at Washougal, I got 10th overall, which was good because I was making a lot of progress.

After the Washougal National we never saw you again. What happened?

I got a call from MDK informing me that they wanted me to sit out the last few races so that they could bring on somebody else. Since then I haven’t really ridden until last Monday. I got a call from a German team asking me to come race, but I really didn’t want to do it, however, Casey Johnson told me to ride his bike [2009 Honda CRF450R], and I really liked it and felt really comfortable! I enjoyed myself and I think that put the fire back inside of me. Before that, I was working for my girlfriend’s dad, who has a construction company, and did that for a couple of weeks, but I did not like that whatsoever (laughs). So, since I got that offer to race in Germany, I decided to head over there because I’ll make some pretty good money if I do well.

When MDK/KTM called to inform you that you would be sitting out the rest of the season, was that a disappointing time?

I felt pretty good at Washougal, and I knew I was improving each weekend and more than capable of finishing inside the top 10. I was definitely bummed, but I did struggle with the bike a little bit. The bike was really fast, though! Some guys, however, can come back from an injury and ride a bike that they’re not comfortable on, but I am the type of rider that if I am not comfortable on a bike, I can’t ride to my full potential. I did struggle with that a little bit, but that is nothing against KTM in any way.

As of right now, you do not have anything lined up to race Supercross in the states?

Nope. I’m not going to go out there and do it by myself. I do have a lot of people who want me to, but everybody has such good equipment these days and I don’t have the right support to go out there and race. I am just going to wait for a call, but if that doesn’t happen I will probably go do the Supercross season in Europe when that comes around.

When will you be heading over to Germany?

It’ll be January 9th, 10th, and 11th. I forget what the race is called, but I have a month of riding and training to get prepared (laughs).

In regards to training, what’s your routine like?

I just started riding again on Monday, and I went to Starwest and then to Perris Raceway a couple of times, too. I’ve been doing a lot of cycling and getting as many miles in as possible on my bicycle to get my cardio up. I’ve also been going to the gym and shedding a few pounds. I just want to go over there and have fun and see where I end up. I honestly have no idea what to expect. I am going back there for some Kawasaki team, and I have no idea how the bikes are going to be. I don’t even have a Kawi right now, so I am trying to find one that I can ride until I head to Germany.

Once you finish up the races in Germany, what’s the next step?

I am just going to continue training and riding, and hopefully I’ll get a call to fill in for somebody. If I can do that it’ll give me the opportunity to go out there and prove myself to everybody. I still have that fire inside of me, and I feel like I am great shape. Since healing up from my back injury to now, there is a huge difference in my riding. I would go out to Perris and be exhausted after three laps; but now I can go out there and do a couple 30-minute motos and feel good afterwards.

Last time we spoke you were in the middle of dealing with your back problem. Are the discs all healed up now?

I don’t have any problems with my back any more. It does get a little sore here and there, but it’s nothing that will slow me down on a motorcycle.

On December 31st, 2007, Red Bull hosted its first-ever Red Bull New Year’s Eve Experiment extravaganza in Las Vegas, NV. As many recall, this is when Australian Robbie Maddison took a leap of 322 feet, breaking the Guinness World Record for a motorcycle jump. One year later, however, and Maddo and the crew at Red Bull have come up with yet another mind-blowing “experiment.” Maddison will be jumping his bike well over 120 feet high to land on the top of the Arc de Triomphe, which is 96 feet high and 40 feet deep in Paris Las Vegas.

Since hearing about Maddo’s new quest, we’re sure many of you are curious to know what it would be like to jump over 120 feet into the air on your dirt bike. Well, though it is only a video game, we found a game that replicates Maddo’s jump he’ll be attempting in only a few short weeks. Check it out, and be sure to post your highest scores, folks.

The off-season usually provides quite a few instances where I get to shoot some different stuff rather than the typical racing action in a SX main event at 10:00 pm in the evening. For this week’s Wednesday Wallpapers, I’ve combined my favorites from the Supercross test tracks, One Industries gear intro with Ryan Dungey, and a day at the Brian Deegan’s house in the hills of Temecula. Enjoy!

2009 SHIFT Strike Gear

Color: Black, Black/Yellow (shown), Orange, Red/White, Day Glo Pink, Blue/White

Price: Pant: $99.95, Jersey: $39.95, Glove: $19.95

Size: Pant 28”-40,” Glove S-XL, Jersey S-XXL

Rating: 10

What it is: Over the years Shift has been known to produce some stylish gear, and for 2009 nothing has changed. The ’09 Strike line from Shift offers some of the best comfort and durability you can find in riding apparel at a reasonable price. With strategically placed vents and stretch zones for added airflow and low profile TPR logos for reduced weight, Shift is doing their best to make riding gear as comfortable and stylish as possible.

Hits: The first thing we noticed when we slid on our Strike pant was the immense amount of comfort and flexibility offered in the knees. For those who wear knee braces, you understand the importance of having solid flexibility in the knees when you throw your leg over a bike. Therefore, thanks to the articulated knees, the pant conforms to your body while riding. As for the jersey, it comes with vented underarms for added breathability and micro cuffs that allow for a lightweight, unrestricted feel. Also, the lightly padded glove reduces your chances of tearing up the palm of your hands with blisters while reinforcing its longevity.

Misses: Our only issue we encountered was the size of the pant. The Strike gear does run a bit big; therefore, depending on the size of your body, you may need to consider a size smaller size than you’re used to.

The Verdict: Overall, the folks at Shift really did their math for ’09 to provide some of the best fitting gear on the market. Aside from that, they have also compiled an array of unique and bright colorways that will keep you looking fresh at the track.

PICKERINGTON, Ohio — Fresh off winning the 2008 AMA SPEED Athlete of the Year Award, James Stewart continues to earn recognition for one of the most successful seasons motorcycle racing has ever seen. Stewart, who won the 2008 AMA Toyota Motocross Championship presented by FMF, and helped the United States win a record 19th Motocross of Nations title, has been named one of 11 finalists for the third annual 2008 SPEED Performer of the Year Award.

The SPEED Performer of the Year is chosen from all major disciplines of motorsport and is presented with the prestigious Mario Andretti Trophy. A 15-member voting panel, which includes racing legend Andretti, has named 11 finalists for the honor. The winner will be announced as part of a one-hour television special in February 2009.

“When the AMA honored James Stewart with the AMA SPEED Athlete of the Year award, we recognized not just his standout performance in motorcycle racing, but his status as one of the top athletes in the world today,” said AMA President and CEO Rob Dingman. “Although all of the nominees for SPEED Performer of the Year are incredible competitors, we humbly submit that James’ historic performance this year in one of the toughest and most unpredictable racing disciplines in the world makes him a clear front-runner for this exceptional honor.”

Stewart, from Haines City, Fla., won all 24 motos in the AMA Toyota Motocross Championship presented by FMF to claim the No. 1 plate. He’s only the second rider in the history of the sport to accomplish this clean sweep. In addition, Stewart was part of Monster Energy’s AMA Team USA three-rider crew that claimed the coveted Chamberlain Trophy at the 2008 Red Bull FIM Motocross of Nations in Donington Park, Great Britain.

In addition to Stewart, nominees for the SPEED Performer of the Year Award include NASCAR’s Jimmy Johnson, Carl Edwards and Kyle Busch; NHRA’s Tony Schumacher; Formula One’s Lewis Hamilton and Felipe Massa; MotoGP’s Valentino Rossi; IndyCar’s Scott Dixon; World of Outlaws Donny Schatz; and USAC’s Jerry Coons Jr.

The SPEED Performer of the Year will be chosen by Andretti, “Wind Tunnel” host Dave Despain, broadcasters Bob Varsha and Ralph Shaheen, SPEEDtv.com’s Robin Miller and Tom Jensen, and racers Tommy Kendall and Dorsey Schroeder.

The SPEED Performance Awards include nine awards that are determined by fan vote. Stewart also is eligible for the “Best Move” award. AMA members and motocross fans should vote for James Stewart and his “best move” by visiting www.speedperformanceawards.com.

As many are aware, Gavin Gracyk has been put through the wringer with many unique and difficult challenges over the course of the past couple of years. With the loss of his father only days after Gracyk completed his first-ever Supercross race at Anaheim 1 earlier this year, Gracyk’s tuner, Dave Derosier, was struck by a car only weeks later and left in critical condition. Though Gracyk’s 2008 campaign was hindered by personal struggles and injuries, the Ohio native still remains positive and excited for his next challenge–whatever that may be. We caught up with the number 273 of Gracyk this morning to talk about his ‘08 season, what he is currently up to, and his plans for ‘09.

Looking back on your ’08 season, you were a part of the Troy Lee Designs/Red Bull/Honda team for the Lites West Coast Region SX series and then you made the transition over to the Joe Gibbs Racing Yamaha aboard an YZ450F for the outdoor season. Though you were onboard with two respectable teams, result wise things just wasn’t clicking.

It was definitely a blessing to work with the guys on the Troy Lee Designs/Red Bull/Honda team, but it was one of those things where my season simply started off on the wrong foot. As you know, I had a lot of personal battles going on at the time with my dad and my mechanic, Dave [Derosier]. During my ’07 season I was able to spend the entire summer with my pops and Dave. Coming into my first Supercross season, I was testing and training to be as prepared as possible come A1. It was a lot of excitement and a great learning experience. I know that I didn’t light the world on fire, but I did, however, learn a lot and put myself into a position to be better the next time. Like I said, I eventually ran into a few things that I had to deal with, but that’s life, and we all have to deal with difficult things. Though it did crumble my blocks, I was able to get through the season.

When the JGR offer came about, Troy [Lee] understood the opportunity they were giving me and was kind enough to let me step away from the Supermoto program they had so that I could focus on my next goal–Joe Gibbs Racing. That team has a lot of goals and ambitions, and things were going great throughout the time we were testing. Unfortunately, I got hurt at the Las Vegas Supercross, and it was hard for me to finish up what I needed to, you know? I was in the middle of getting things done, but that injury didn’t allow me to finish my preparation. Once I recovered from that, I again had another injury and it felt like I couldn’t escape the injury ball. After that, I had another crash where I injured my elbow. Needless to say, I was only at four or five outdoor Nationals this year. With the injuries and lack of time on the track, I didn’t have an opportunity to show everybody what I am really capable of. You know how this sport is… It’s what you’ve done lately and not what you can do, which is completely understandable. So right now I am just taking care of my mom, who is having some health issues; and I really didn’t have anything come together that I felt 100 percent confident in. Therefore, instead of going into the season unprepared, I am taking a step back and putting all of the pieces together that will allow me to race Supercross. That fire is still burning inside of me, and if it is stronger than ever it is right now (laughs).

Understandably, you do not want to head into a Supercross season unprepared. With that said, however, is there any chance that we’ll see Gavin Gracyk at a Supercross in ’09?

I can’t say yes or no, but there is always a possibility that I will be at a Supercross. That’s what I do… I race, you know? There is a good chance you’ll see number 273 on the track. I don’t want people to think they’ll never see me again, because that is not the case. As far as Anaheim 1, however, I will not be racing. Will I race any Supercross’ this year? There is a very good chance I will. I haven’t lost sight of my goals, and I am trying to set myself up with the right people and keep moving forward. I’ll definitely be racing some outdoors… Dude I have all kinds of things going on right now, so who knows where I’ll be (laughs). Honestly, though, I’ll be racing, but I want people to know that when they do see me racing, I’ll be on a 450. I’m back with my trainer/nutritionist, Drew Robertson, who has stood by my side since day one. He isn’t just a nutritionist and trainer to me he is a close friend. I am just trying to surround myself with people who believe in me, and I am simply doing the work. There is no other way to do it, right? You get out of it what you put into it.

Bud… It breaks my heart to tell you that I am not going to be lining up at A1 in a couple of weeks. Even though I was riding in the Lites class, it was my first-ever Supercross series and to miss your second year is really difficult…really difficult! But I am trying to be patient and let the Lord place me where he wants me. With that being said, I am going to be at the right place at the right time.

Since getting a taste of Supercross, is that something you thoroughly enjoy?

Oh man, I really enjoyed Supercross! I enjoyed being out at the Honda track riding and trying to better myself. It was just one of those things where I needed more time. I can’t fool myself and go into the Supercross season telling myself I have everything handled because that isn’t the case. Until last year, I didn’t even have the equipment to ride Supercross. There are a lot of pieces to the puzzle that you need to have pieced together before you can go race a Supercross. To go into the season unprepared would be a foolish move. My dad always told me that you go into something prepared; otherwise you wait and tackle the obstacle when you are prepared. There is, however, a fine line to that because you don’t really know what to expect until you go out there and do it. With that said, if I went into the SX season unprepared that would make people think that I can’t ride Supercross. I just need to keep believing and fighting the good fight.

Despite all of your personal struggles you’ve endured throughout the last several years, how have you been able to stay strong mentally?

Man, I think that is because of the grace of God. At the end of the day I can’t give myself any credit because that would be lying. I wouldn’t be where I am today without him. It’s through his mercy and grace that I am able to get through everything that’s been thrown at me.

We haven’t heard much about your mechanic Dave [Derosier] in a while. Are things going okay for him?

Dave is actually doing therapy all of the time and getting a lot better. He is up and about, moving around, riding a bicycle, light jogging; he isn’t what he was, but he is also a lot further ahead compared to where he was in January. It is definitely a blessing that that guy is here. If anybody knows anything about Dave Derosier it’s that he is a fighter and will not give up. He’ll fight through anything, whether it be making a bike go faster or learning to walk again. He is a fighter, and he’ll always be a fighter. He realizes that he is getting better everyday, but that it is also a process.

Although you do not have anything lined up for 2009, have you still been riding this off-season?

Oh yeah. I am actually in the process of getting some bikes put together. However, since I moved back home from North Carolina, I haven’t had a lot of time on the bike because of the weather and taking care of my mom. Right now, however, I am in Northern California and I’ll be heading down to Southern California to do some riding. Plus, the program that Drew has me on is preparing me for my next task. I still have a lot of people supporting me and staying by my side like Glen and Ryan at Cycra, 5-8 Motocross, and everybody else who knows that I have a goal I’m trying to accomplish. I want to make sure that they are all there to see it accomplished. I’m trying to do a few things that my dad used to do. My dad used to help out riders who were a less fortunate to get to all the races. As I would accumulate sponsors, he would talk to them to get donations and use those donations to take a less fortunate kid to Texas, Loretta’s, and help to support that kid with tires, gear, and helmets, anything he could to help that kid get through the year of racing. I told him that I would carry his vision out on that, however, I have yet to do so because I have some personal things that I need to take care of first. But I do plan on doing some riding schools and interacting with the kids. It’s really cool to work with kids and those who just love to ride their dirt bike. These kids that are just learning how to ride will be the future of our sport, and I want to help them accomplish their goals.

I am going to be opening up a track as well, but as far as opening it up to the public that wont happen right away. It’ll be a place for me to train and do my job once the outdoor Nationals roll around. I want to come into the opening around at a 110 percent and use that momentum towards the following season. I want to leave round 12 of the Nationals on a good note that will allow me to instantly start preparing for the Supercross season… That’s basically what’s going on in my life right now, bro (laughs).

If we do see you at a Supercross in ’09, you’ll be on a 450, correct?

Yes sir.

Would you say that you’re come comfortable on the big bike compared to a 250F?

I don’t know what it is, but for some reason I just struggle on a little bike. I’m not saying that I can’t ride a little bike, but I feel like I am in a better position to be on a bike that I’m more confident on. In the Lites class, I am racing guys who are 30 or 40 pounds lighter than I am, and they are able to do things that I may not be able to do. On a 450, however, I have confidence in the bike, and I know that nine times out of 10 it’ll get me over whatever obstacle I am faced with at that particular moment. I think the lowest I got down to was 163lbs, and that was last season. You know what my problem is, though? I like to eat, and when I don’t I get cranky (laughs). When I am racing a 130lb feather on a rocket ship it makes things tough (laughs). I want to be in the 450 class, because that’s where I feel like I belong.

CATCHING UP WITH TREY CANARD
We spotted Eastern Regional Supercross Lites Champion Trey Canard at our local LA Fitness gym last night, working up a sweat in his velour Fox Racing track suit, so we decided to ring him up this morning to see what he was up to…

So you’re in California, preparing for the 2009 Supercross series. How is testing going thus far?

Pretty good. We have my suspension pretty stiff so that I can jump really far. I am going for the world record distance jump next week, so I am pretty excited about that. I am trying to beat Trigger Gumm’s record (laughs). I haven’t done a lot of testing just yet because I just got back on the bike and getting used to things. What’s the weather like that you left behind in Oklahoma? It was really nice a couple of weeks ago, but then it just turned to crap. It was so cold, and I had to wear a jacket when I was riding. The weather is definitely a lot better out here.

Are you healed up now after breaking your femur at Washougal?

Yeah. I got it x-rayed a week ago and it looks perfect. Obviously it is in the back of my mind a little bit, but it’s really old news. I’ll definitely be a 100% by the time Anaheim rolls around. So no more limp? Oh no! The pimp limp is gone.

Is the game plan for you to run your big number one plate on the East Coast for ’09?

I am actually doing north central. No… I actually need to make that decision within the next few weeks. I am not too sure what I am going to do as of now, but once I start feeling good on the bike we’ll see what happens.

So if you’re feeling confident, are you going to try and sweep the West Coast Championship as well?

I’d like to ride the West Coast series. With that rule, I am going to be moving up next year, so I’d like to spend some time on the West Coast tracks in preparation for next year.

How different is the 2009 CRF250R? Have you spent much time on it?

I’ve only had about two weeks of Supercross riding, and it is basically the same setup that we had last year. However, we should start testing the new stuff pretty soon.

So what’s new with Trey Canard? Have you been getting yourself into some good trouble?

Not really. I’m just excited that it isn’t 20 degrees outside. That’s my new thrill!

With your rookie season now behind you, what can people expect to see from you in ’09?

A championship would be great, but I’ve realized if that’s the only thing you race for then things don’t really turn out that well for you. I just need to attack every race as if it were my last one. I am going to do the best that I can; however it goes it goes. So I guess you could say that Trey Canard is just going to give it all he has at every race.

Wow. I knew that number-one plate would get to your head eventually. You are referring to yourself in the third person, much like a NBA star…

(Laughs) Hey, you started it a couple questions ago!

So if you’re not racing solely for a championship, then what else are you racing for? The fame, girls, and money?

Yeah…the money (laughs). I got a taste of what it’s like to win a championship during the Supercross season and that was one of the best feelings. I’ve discovered that if you only focus on winning a championship and nothing else, things don’t seem to work out. I just take each race one step at a time and give it my all. I don’t worry about a championship until the time has come.

Are you wearing Fox gear yet, or is that not until January?

I’ve actually been wearing Fox for a couple of weeks.

Do you feel foxy in it?

Definitely! I feel like a white, red headed James Stewart. (Laughs)

Houston, Texas December 1, 2008 - Houston, we have a new location to ride motocross. It’s Cornerstone Motocross Park, and it is now available for your riding pleasure. After months of designing, redesigning and several test rides, Cornerstone Motocross Park is now open to the public. Key riders from beginner to pros have been invited to Cornerstone over the past couple of months to ensure that this new track will be best suited for all levels of motocross riders. Thanksgiving weekend was the big grand opening as riders from the greater Houston area were able to take laps on the fun new circuit.
Cornerstone has a great mix of soil consisting of clay and sand. This combined with a unique layout make this a must ride for motocrossers of all skill levels. The signature obstacle on the track is a large mound of dirt that banks a huge left hand turn. Other fun sections include the rolling sand woops, a flowing rhythm section and easy step-up table tops. A beginner can easily clear the step-up part, while the more seasoned rider will clear the step-up and table together.
This is only the beginning for Cornerstone. There are plans for an air conditioned spectator viewing tower and some other nice things that will be discussed at a later date.
Cornerstone is owned and operated by motocrossers for motocrossers and they understand the needs of today’s riders. Cornerstone will be open from Wednesdays through Sundays. Opening most of those days mid morning and closing at sunset. In the immediate future you can expect a starting gate and race action in 2009. For complete information you can go to www.csmxpark.com, and receive up to the minute track conditions along with photos, fees and other important information.

As all of you know, our visitors have had the ability to upload their own photos since the inception of our new site platform, and with that comes many photos of the ladies that surround our great sport. We thought we’d compile some of those photos as sort of a reprise… Some were submitted by the ladies themselves, others were loaded by boyfriends and husbands, and others are of women that may not even know they are in a photo.

Anywho, check ‘em out.

And if you think you, or someone you know, has that certain something, don’t hesitate to upload a shot…maybe we’ll feature it on the main page marquee.

NBC SPORTS AND MTV ANNOUNCE THE CREATION OF
ALLI, THE ALLIANCE OF ACTION SPORTS

Alli to include seven national & international action sports properties, adding new
partnerships with Maloof Money Cup, AMA Motocross Championship & King of Wake
series to popular Dew Tour franchise

NEW YORK – December 1, 2008 – NBC Sports and MTV, a division of Viacom’s MTV
Networks (NYSE: VIA and VIA.B), announced today the creation of Alli, the Alliance of
Action Sports™. Alli is a global business that joins the former Action Sports Tour
properties (AST) with Maloof Money Cup, AMA Motocross Championship and King of
Wake series to create the most diverse and robust action-sports offering in the world.
The new umbrella brand, which will continue to be co-owned by NBC Sports and MTV,
will offer a schedule of seven national and international action sports tours and events,
multimedia content and production, a digital hub and consumer-facing lifestyle brand.
Building on the successful foundation of AST, Alli will serve as the owner and operator
of the Dew Tour and Winter Dew Tour, Free Flow Tour, and the China Invitational. In
addition, Alli has formed partnerships with industry leaders and premier properties:
Maloof Money Cup, the AMA Motocross Championships, and the King of Wake series.
Alli partners will continue to manage their respective events with the added benefit of
television programming on NBC Sports and MTV, global media content distribution,
sponsorship sales, and marketing and promotion across all platforms. A soon-to-belaunched
digital hub will also serve as the online destination for all Alli properties and a
leading source of all action sports content and news.

This announcement comes six months after the groundbreaking joint venture between
NBC and MTV around the AST and its related businesses. This wide-ranging,
150 Harvester Drive, Suite 140| Burr Ridge, IL 60527 | Alli, Alliance of Action Sports, LLC
strategic partnership expanded the business across NBC and MTV’s multiple screens,
including action sports competition and youth-focused lifestyle programming, crosspromotion,
multi-platform content and distribution, consumer products licensing and an
enhanced digital offering. Moving forward under the Alli brand, the partnership will
include over 80 hours of original programming offered annually across NBC, USA
Network, MTV and MTV2

“Alli’s mission is to facilitate the momentous growth of action sports by showcasing both
the competition and lifestyle aspect of these sports. We believe these are the sports of
a new generation and Alli will bring together the best properties, athletes, and brands
globally for the fans of action sports,” says Wade Martin, President of Alli, the Alliance of
Action Sports.

“When NBC Sports launched the Dew Tour we knew there would be an opportunity to
expand into other action sports. We are excited to bring the best programming across
the entire action sports genre on multiple media distribution platforms to our audience,”
says Kevin Monaghan, Senior Vice President, Business Development, NBC Sports &
Olympics.

Added Jeff Yapp, Executive Vice President of Program Enterprises for MTV Networks
Music & Logo Group, “This is a major step in building the business we imagined when
we first partnered with NBC Sports. Building our online platform, creating a lifestyle
brand, and expanding original content will positively impact the network of partners,
athletes, fans and the action sports industry as a whole, which is everything that the
alliance represents”.

An overview of the Alli properties is as follows:

Maloof Money Cup
Held for the first time in 2008, the Maloof Money Cup, owned and operated by the
Maloof family, has quickly become the premier skateboarding event within the
community and attracts every top athlete. Including three professional competitions –
Men’s and Women’s Pro Street, and Men’s Pro Vert – and the Amateur Championships,
it boasts the largest single event purse in skateboarding with over $450,000 in prize
money.

AMA Motocross Championship
AMA Motocross Championship is the top outdoor series in motocross and draws elite
rider talent from all around the world. The MX Sports-organized series, which began in
1972, spans 12 races across the U.S., and at the end of each year, the AMA National
Motocross Championship titles are awarded based on the riders’ performances over
the entire series.

King of Wake
As the elite pro wakeboarding circuit, the King of Wake series has attracted the sport’s
top riders from throughout the globe. With more than $300,000 in prize money over the
150 Harvester Drive, Suite 140| Burr Ridge, IL 60527 | Alli, Alliance of Action Sports, LLC
eight-event season, riders compete over the course of the year to be named the “King
of Wake” – an award based on points accumulated at each stop of the series. Events
include Wake Games, Pro Wakeboard Tour (5 events), WWA National Championships,
and WWA World Championships. The King of Wake is organized by World Sports &
Marketing – the leading wake event producers since 1988.

Dew Tour
The Dew Tour, the premier season-long series in action sports, consists of five major,
multi-sport events, featuring skateboarding (park and vert), BMX (park, vert, and dirt),
and FMX. Dew Tour is the most watched and attended action sports property in the
world with over 250k spectators, 41 million total viewers and reaches over 100 countries
worldwide. The events extend across the country, have a cumulative points system, and
a $3.5 million competitive purse. The Dew Tour has been the cornerstone property of
AST over the last four years, and its success has now enabled the formation of Alli, the
Alliance of Action Sports. It crowns year-end champions including past Dew Cup
winners Ryan Sheckler, Shaun White, Bucky Lasek, Jamie Bestwick, and Nate Adams.

Winter Dew Tour
The Winter Dew Tour is launching in December of ’08, and will expand Alli’s footprint
into the winter action sports. It consists of three major, multi-sport events spanning
across the country, with a cumulative points system, and a $1.5 million competitive
purse. The tour will feature 29 hours of original television programming. Each event
features men and women’s snowboard (superpipe and slopestyle), and men’s freeskiing
(superpipe and slopestyle). Top athletes, Shaun White, Hannah Teter, Travis Rice,
Simon Dumont, and Danny Kass, are already planning to compete.

Free Flow Tour
The Free Flow Tour, the Dew Tour’s official amateur series, provides amateur athletes
the opportunity to earn a chance to compete against the pros in the Dew Tour. The
Free Flow Tour consists of 50 events across 26 cities in the U.S.,
featuring skateboarding and BMX. The winners of the Free Flow Tour Finals compete
against the pros at the Dew Tour’s PlayStation Pro in Orlando, Fla. Past Free Flow
Tour winners include Chaz Ortiz (2007 Dew Cup Winner, Skate Park) and Mike Spinner
(2008 Dew Tour Second Place, BMX Park).

China Invitational
The China Invitational is Alli’s first international expansion initiative. The inaugural China
Invitational was held in April 2008 in Beijing, China and featured the top skateboarders
competing in vert and park disciplines before a capacity crowd.

PICKERINGTON, Ohio — The American Motorcyclist Association (AMA) is proud to announce that Stan Simpson is the 2008 AMA Motorcyclist of the Year. Simpson, who is the current AMA Board of Directors Chairman, was honored with the inaugural AMA Motorcyclist of the Year distinction in conjunction with the quarterly meeting of the AMA Board of Directors today in Irvine, Calif.

The AMA Motorcyclist of the Year is the person who has had the most profound impact on motorcycling in a single calendar year. Rather than recognize a lifetime of achievement, the award recognizes an individual’s influence on motorcycling and its future.

The AMA Motorcyclist of the Year announcement, and the story of the man who earned it, is commemorated with a feature-length article in the January 2009 issue of American Motorcyclist, the official journal of the AMA. The January issue arrives in member mailboxes the second week of December.

“This inaugural selection may seem self-serving, yet Stan Simpson is the clear choice for this distinction,” said AMA President and CEO Rob Dingman. “Stan has had a greater impact on the AMA and motorcycling than any single person in America in 2008.

“In recent years, the AMA had become mired in professional racing controversy, and the Association had lost the focus that a strong, unified national association must maintain,” Dingman said. “Stan recognized that, and he led the bold moves necessary to fix the AMA once and for all. Under Stan’s leadership, many of the AMA’s professional racing properties were sold to an organization very capable of elevating the sport, the menu of member benefits continues to grow, our magazine has improved significantly, we are beefing up our Government Relations Department, and our fiscal house is in order.

“Most importantly, Stan Simpson’s leadership has put the AMA in a better position to focus on our core mission of protecting the future of motorcycling,” said Dingman.

Simpson has been a dedicated off-road and street rider for decades. He competed in the National Enduro Championship in the 1970s and participated in the International Six Day Trial. After enjoying a lifetime of motorcycling because of the programs and efforts of the AMA, with the urging of friends, Simpson decided that it was time to give back to the AMA and motorcycling’s future.

Simpson was elected to the AMA Board of Directors, representing the individual members in the South Central region, in 2005. He also held a seat on the American Motorcycle Heritage Foundation (AMHF) Board of Directors, which guides the AMA’s Motorcycle Hall of Fame Museum, and eventually served as chairman. In late 2007, Simpson was thrust into the position of AMA Board Chairman when the previous chairman resigned after an internal audit revealed he had submitted fraudulent travel reimbursement claims.

In addition to his service on the AMA Board, Simpson — who accepts no reimbursement from the AMA for his travel — contributes a great deal of his time and money to both the AMA and the AMHF.

“The AMA and all of motorcycling is better positioned for growth and prosperity because of the vision and perseverance of Stan Simpson,” Dingman said. “There is a lot of work to be done, but thanks to Stan, we are now able to tackle that work with the urgency and diligence that our membership deserves.”

About the American Motorcyclist Association
Since 1924, the AMA has promoted and protected the motorcycling lifestyle. AMA members come from all walks of life and they navigate many different roads on their journey to the same destination: freedom on two wheels. As the world’s largest motorcycle organization with nearly 300,000 members, the AMA advocates for motorcyclists’ interests in the halls of local, state and federal government, the committees of international governing organizations and the court of public opinion. Through member clubs, promoters and partners, the AMA sanctions more motorsports competition events than any other organization in the world. Through its Motorcycle Hall of Fame Museum, the AMA preserves the heritage of motorcycling for future generations. For more information, visit www.AmericanMotorcyclist.com.

BORKY ADDED TO TROY LEE DESIGNS HONDA

Although the Supercross season is only a little over a month away, our good buddy Sean Borkenhagen gave us a call late last week to tell us he has finally inked himself a deal for the 2009 West Coast Lites Region Supercross series. After a team tryout and a couple of weeks of waiting, Borky has signed up with the Troy Lee Designs Honda team for ’09. “I am so pumped,” Borkenhagen told us. “This is the opportunity I’ve been looking for to prove to everybody that I have what it takes.” Though this will be Borkenhagen’s first-ever Supercross season, he told us he is confident in his ability on a Supercross track and will be doing a lot of testing at the Honda test track in preparation for his debut A1.

DC MOUSTACHE FINALE

DC Shoes’ Nate Adams and Travis Pastrana’s Movember Moustache venture came to a close this weekend. The two moto stars grew MO’s for the entire month of November to help raise money for the Movember Fundraising efforts. Unfortunately, we couldn’t get a final photo of T.P.’s MO before he shaved ‘er off, but we did get this photo of Nate’s mean fu-manchu… pretty rad. Check out the entire progression at www.dcshoes.com/movember.

How the ‘Mo’-vement Began
Movember, an Australian non-profit organization, was born in 2003 when a couple of Australian mates were enjoying a beer at a small bar in Melbourne and decided two things – men’s health issues needed a forum and the moustache was in dire need of a comeback. Their goal was to create a campaign that joined like-minded individuals while raising money for charity and having fun along the way.

Since 2003, Movember has turned into a truly global movement. In 2007, Mo Bros and Mo Sistas in the United States, United Kingdom, Canada, New Zealand, and Spain joined their Aussie counterparts by participating in the campaign. Since Movember’s inception, almost 200,000 Mo Bros have sported a Mo and more than $29 million has been raised globally for prostate cancer research, including $740,568 raised in the United States last year. Movember is the biggest international event supporting prostate cancer.

My name is Scott Kandel.  I am the founder and Chief Altruistic Officer of Warthog Racing (www.WarthogRacing.com).  Warthog Racing runs a professional Supercross/Motocross race team – the largest team in the world with over 25 riders.  The official name for the team for 2009 SX is MDK/Warthog Racing/MotoConcepts.

We are unique in that we support professional racers called privateers that are resource disadvantaged and we work hard operating as a virtual not-for-profit to bring them resources like money and sponsors so our racers can compete to be the best in the world.  Please note the name of the organization has been changed from Wonder Warthog Racing to Warthog Racing for 2009.

We only have one paid position on staff – the race team truck driver, Chris Parsons.  Chris handles more riders out of our rig than 10 other teams combined.  He is certainly a truck driver for the ages.  The dozens of others that help make Warthog Racing a reality are all volunteers, including myself and Darrell Saldana, the Race Director, Jon Kandel, the team’s Task Master, Alison Turner, the Business Manager, Jaime Allen, Benefactor Relationship Director, and Jeff Tomlinson, the Chief of Logistics.

Our mission is to help deserving privateer racers live their dreams.  We’ve been living this vision since 2003.  Our program – The Warthog Racing Academy — provides the riders motorcycle transportation, pit set-up, mechanics, who work through the unique Motorcycle Mechanics Institute Internship program, gas, food, water, hospitality, and rider marketing and promotion, as well as the opportunity for riders to “graduate” to better resourced teams at any time during the season.  The individual riders are responsible for their own motorcycles, race entry fees, and travel expenses.

Although the Warthog Racing Academy has attained enough resources to fund our infrastructure for the season thanks to great sponsors like MDK and MMI, the economic turbulence of 2008 has not been kind to our riders.  Many of our riders with great potential have little in the way of resources to make it through the entire season.  These are excellent riders like Heath Voss, Tyler Bowers, Sean Collier, Eric Sorby, Manu Rivas, Gavin Gracyk, Tyler Bright, Michael Blose, Vince Friese (East Coast), Jacob Saylor (East Coast), Ryan Mills (West Coast), Tiger Lacey (West Coast), Mike Horban (West Coast), and Kevin Urquhart (West Coast), plus many more to be named during the season.  This is where the fans of the sport can help.  You can “adopt” a rider in the Warthog Racing Academy to help them make it through the season.  Please feel free to contact Scott Kandel at 213 268-2659 or scott@wonderwarthogracing.com if you’d like to help any of these kids out.  Any type of contribution WILL make a difference.

Also new the 2009 season is the Warthog Racing Supercross Complex with two SX tracks on it.  We have built exact replicas of the 2009 Anaheim 1 and Atlanta tracks to give the privateers the real world experience they need to compete.  It is located on the Honolulu Hills Raceway property located near Bakersfield, CA.  It is part of an existing 2100 acre riding park.  It is open year round to all AMA SX endorsed privateers at no cost – it’s not just our MDK/Warthog Racing riders, it’s to help the sport in an area that is sorely needed.

Finally, we have created an affiliate program that links like-minded teams together in an initiative we call the Warthog Nation.  These teams are all working to support the goals of Warthog Racing – to support the privateer through creative programs and to make Supercross/Motocross the standard by which all Motorsports are measured.  Our first member team of the Warthog Nation is the new elite MotoConcepts/MDK Speed Honda team featuring our recent graduate from the Warthog Racing Academy Jeff Alessi as well as Frenchman Ben Coisy, Australian Daniel McCoy, and Cole Siebler.  Also joining the Warthog Nation for 2009 is the always popular Fire and Police team.  And finally, our lifetime charter member of the Warthog Nation is the former Supercross World Champion Heath Voss, who will be representing the U.S. Air Force and MasterCraft Boats whilst spreading the gospel of the Warthog Nation.

A debt of gratitude goes out to our sponsors, partners, and benefactors that make The Warthog Racing Academy possible — MDK Motorsports, MDK Speed, MotoConcepts, DeCal Works, Smooth Industries, MMI, Transworld Motocross, RacerX Illustrated, Dirt Rider Magazine, Relentless Media, MotocrossGiant.com, The Plumber Inc., MB2 Raceway, Edgile Consulting, Dana K Business Parks, The Whitaker Wellness Institute, DT1 Air Filters, Vanquish MX, Advanced Maintenance, Honolulu Hills Raceway, L&M Racing and MXResultz.com.  With this fine group, anything is possible.  And special thanks to Feld Motor Sports.  Because of their full support, dozens of privateers get the opportunity to live their dreams.

Take care and we’ll see you at the races!!
