2009, Picacho Peak TT #2

The Picacho Peak TT #2 was today. I participated in both the 20K and 40K. The course was good with a head wind out and a tail wind back. Thanks to Nancy Ellis for allowing me to go off first in the 20K, in order to have time to recover for the 40K. The temperature reached just under 100 degrees by the end of the race. This is another long standing TT series in Arizona that is always well run and attended. Thanks to Saguaro Velo for sponsoring the series!

2009, 3 Bears TT #3

Today was the final 3 Bears TT in Red Rock Arizona. Summit Velo has done an outstanding job of putting on this Time Trial Series. The course as I mentioned before, is excellent and challenging. I look forward to this series in 2010. We had Dennis Mong and myself to represent AZphalt Cycling.

Many thanks go out to Summit Velo for putting on the race and series. I would strongly encourage you to go out and do this race series. The course is outstanding and the management of the race is even better. The weather was good again with a tailwind out and headwind coming back. I look forward to the next and final race of the series in mid July.

2009, 3 Bears TT #1

Summitt Velo did a great job of securing an new TT course in the state and putting on the first of a three race series. The course had 680 feet of climbing on the way out and we got to scream home. The weather was perfect with a slight bit of rain to cool the Arizona desert off all morning. I look forward to the remaining two races.

2009, Hungry Dog Criterium

Yesterday I raced the annual Hungry Dog Criterium in Ahwatukee Arizona. Honeywell Cycling has put this on for I believe 12 years now. As always, they did an outstanding job. The entire family was out to see the Masters Men 40+ race. It was fun to be on the bike. I took one of the three primes and the cash went to Landen. It was a gentlemen's agreement before the race. I raced agreesively in a number of breaks and chasing down any potential breaks that countered after my efforts. In the end, it came down to a field sprint. I ended up 11th over all and was pleased with a safe fun day on the bike.

2009, Flapjack TT #1

The weather held out today for the Flapjack Time Trial #1. It is great to have this course back on the race calendar. The series will be three 20K races. Summit Velo did a great job of putting on the race. They even served everyone pancakes after the race. I was pleased with my ride today finishing 8th in the field. I look forward to getting back to a steady training schedule with Barney King. I have developed a greater appreciation for others that have limited time to train for races with the expansion of the family. There has not been much time devoted to training over the past four months relative to our usual schedule. I would not change that for anything! It looks like a few Criteriums over the next month are going to be on the schedule next!

2009, Racing Season Begins

The first race of the year will be the Flap Jack Time Trial in Florence Arizona. This is a flat 20K effort that will be a series in the state this year. We are hoping for good weather all weekend. I am looking forward to the race and getting back on the TT bike.

2009, Cycling Season

The 2009 Cycling season will be tempered to a few focused races. The addition of the latest Powell came on November 7, 2008. Lincoln Douglas Powell was 6lbs. 12oz. and 20in. My better half is doing great recovering after a C-section. Tomorrow is our first ride back on the road together with getting back to training. I have been able to complete 12 weeks of lifting and core workouts over the winter. The usual base miles of four thousand miles was cut in half. Once we get back into a routine training schedule, I will look to set a few goals for the year.

The 2008 season has not been one with a huge focus on racing. The few time trials that I competed in over the summer months ending with the Elite National Time Trial were outstanding to go to. Any day on the bike is a good day. We are currently expecting our second child in November. We are extremely excited about having another addition to the Powell household. It has been a long hawl over the past few years with number two. I am really looking forward to Yolanda getting back into race shape after November. She has been so focused on our family and completely put us infront of her training and racing. Look out when the management is focused!!!!

2008, US Elite National Time Trial

It was a pleasure competing in the US Elite National Time Trial on August 6, 2008. USA Cycling did an outstanding job of putting on a quality event. The course was excellent and very challenging.

2008, Picacho TT#1

It was a pleasure to be back on my Time Trial bike this past weekend to do the Picacho Peak TT #1. Many thanks to Saguaro Velo for putting on this long standing series of Time Trials. I was pleased with my performance in the 20K putting in a 90% effort in order to same some for the 40K in this 100 F plus day. I will continue my Time Trial specific training and do the third race in the series to prepare for the US Elite National Time Trial August 6th in California.

2008, South Mountain TT

My first and only race to date in 2008 will be the South Mountain TT. Training and racing has not been a priority for the past six months. I will be heading out to the course for fun on the bike.

In 2008, I will be putting in base miles for the first few months. I will look to begin training for a few Time Trials and Criteriums some time in late spring.

2007, Arizona State TT Championships

Today was the Arizona State TT Championships. It was a pleasure getting on the bike and racing this event. I was extremely pleased with my performance today. Charting my wattage on the SRM unit, I was exactly where I thought I would be with training. I ended up placing 2nd in the Masters 40-44 age group behind a very talented rider in Doug Loveday. I have always respected him as a person and his ability on the bike. Many thanks go out to Southwest Hand Cycling Team for putting on the race this year.

2007, Picacho Peak Time Trial #3

Today was the final time trial in the Picacho Peak series for 2007. Many thanks to Saguaro Velo for putting on the race series again in 2007. The conditions were good with a slight head wind out and a tail wind returning. The weather was humid and in the high 80's to low 90's depending on your start time. Things went well today and I ended up 3rd in the Pro, Cat 1 field (0:55:32). I was off of my PR for the course today, but any day on the bike is a great day!

2007, Picacho Peak Time Trial #2

It has been a while since my last entry. Yesterday I did the Picacho Peak Time Trial here in Arizona. It has been extremely hot lately with temperatures well over one hundred degrees. Things went well for the day. I generally double at this race doing both the 20K and 40K races. My times put me in second for the 20K and fifth in the 40K. It was really nice to get on my time trial bike and race with everything we have going on these days. Many thanks go out to Saguaro Velo who puts on this race series year end and year out!

2007, South Mountain Time Trial

It was a pleasure co-promoting the eigth edition of the South Mountain Time Trial and competing in the race as well. I had the opportunity to race both the Pro, Cat 1 and Master 40-44 events finishing 1st and 3rd respectfully. I was not able to better my P.R., but was very pleased with my performance this year. This was the first time I ever doubled on this event. I look forward to a number of Time Trial events moving forward with the 2007 race schedule.

2007, Race Promotion Update

I would like to thank Team Vitesse headed up by Mike Dale for their efforts in partnering with AZphalt Cycling to put on the eight edition of the South Mountain Time Trial on May 12, 2007. The race was a hugh success due to their efforts. The partnership between the two teams to continue with this race on the Arizona Race Calendar should be even stronger in 2008.

2007, Arizona State Criterium Championships

I truly enjoyed doing the Arizona Criterium Championships this year. It was the first time I had raced on this course. I was able to race the Master 40-44 race with our family schedule. The race was good and I enjoyed the competition. It was nice to see Dave Reid win our category. I ended up finishing 7th overall. Congratulations Dave!

2007, Race Update

The race schedule has been on hold for a few weeks with our family schedule taking top priority. This coming weekend, I do plan on doing the "Arizona State Criterium Championships" for the Masters 40-44. We will be on a plane to Houston Texas two hours after that race. Criteriums are not my strong suit, but they are generally fun and a good workout to say the least!

The next event would be the "South Mountain Time Trial", where I plan on race both the Pro, 1 and Masters 40-44 race.

Without a lot of races, my base miles have been very good, with some excellent days of interval training. Many thanks go out to my coach Barney King of "Barney King Coaching" for his help, support, flexibility and patience with all I have going on outside of racing.

2007, Hungry Dog Criterium

Honeywell Cycling put on the 9th annual "Hungry Dog Criterium" this past weeekend. As always, they did an outstanding job. This has been one of my favorite Criteriums to do since I have been racing. I raced the Pro, 1, 2, 3 race in the afternoon. It is getting warm in Phoenix now, but the weather was great. I missed the break for the winning move and ended up with the pack finishing 11th overall. It was a fun day on the bike.

The highlight of my day was taking a lap with my son after the race. Landen is going to be 4 years old in July. He got me on the line!!

2007, Valley of the Sun Stage Race

The Valley of the Sun Stage Race was yet another challenging three days of Masters racing this year. I chose to race Masters with all we have going these days. The races are shoreter but not any less intense. On the opening Time Trial, I took 4th overall. The races second stage was decided on the KOM lap, with barely missing the key move. I ended up 11th winning the field sprint up the finall climb. On the final day, stage three was pretty steady. With four laps to go, I went to the front and stayed out of trouble. In the end, I hit the final turn in first but ended up 8th overall for the day. The final GC was posted with my result being a 10th place finish.

2007, McDowell Mtn. Criterium

The season officially started for me today. Our team helped support the McDowell Mtn. Criterium in Fountain Hills Arizona. Team RPM did an outstanding job of hosting the event. I was able to race the Masters 40+ race taking one Prime and 5th overall. The Masters 30+ was immediately following the 40+ and I pack finished around 15th in that one. With balancing everything going on, I did not stay for the Pro, Cat 1-2 race. My overall numbers on the SRM were good and I am looking forward to racing the Valley of the Sun Stage Race February 16-18.

2007, Race Schedule

My off season training has gone well. I will open up the 2007 race season with the "McDowell Mountain Circuit Race" doing the masters race. AZphalt Cycling is working support for this race. This should be a good day of high intensity to get ready for the "Valley of the Sun Stage Race". I am glad this in on the schedule this season. I missed it completely last year and only completed part of the race in 2005. It is an outstanding early season stage race put on by White Mountain Road Club. I am not sure the number of times I have done this race, but it si some where around ten times. Once through these races, there are a number of local Criteriums that I plan to do that really work out well balancing things with work and family.
