SCOTT welcomes Davi Millsaps to the Team

SCOTT Sports is pleased to announce that Factory Honda’s, Davi Millsaps, has joined the SCOTT team. Millsaps will represent SCOTT for MX apparel and goggles during the 2010 supercross and outdoor season. “Davi’s talent, ability and commitment to the sport are exactly what we were looking for. He has proven what it takes to be a champion and we’re pleased to be apart of his efforts in 2010,” said Tallon Vohland, SCOTT pro racing manager.

“I am really excited to join the SCOTT team. I’ve always known SCOTT goggles to be the best performing goggles out there and have been very pleased with the apparel,” states Millsaps.

Millsaps returned to racing action after a 2 month break following the US Open in Las Vegas. This time, in Australia, Davi would be sporting his new Scott gear and goggles. Davi immediately came out swinging and was in the top 3 fastest in both practice sessions. The finals were comprised of three seven-lap races with five minutes in between, and the winners were decided by totaling their points – 20 points for first back to one point for 20th. Davi had less than stellar start in the first race, ending up an eventual 4th. That would be the only setback for Davi all weekend, as he would get it together quickly for the next 2 races. In the second race, Scott athlete Chad Reed would get out to a great start with Davi close in second. Davi was able to pressure Chad most of the race but had to settle into 2nd place behind the champ. The final race had a bit more excitement when the skies opened up. Luckily for Reedy and Davi, their Scott goggles were rain ready. Reed would eventually take the lead and Davi would end up second again, good enough for a 2nd overall!!

Dew Tour Breck Pipe Finals and Slope Prelims

Tonight wrapped up day 3 at the first stop of the Dew Tour here in Breckenridge, CO. On the list today fro SCOTT athletes was Ski Slopestyle Prelims, and Ski Superpipe Finals under the lights on Peak 8. First up was the Slopestyle Prelims.

Elias and Tom will be joining 10 others including Alexis Godbout in the finals of slopestyle tomorrow morning in Freeway 8. Look for all the riders to step it up a notch and more doubles being thrown down.

The Lights came on and it was game time in the stunt ditch for the big boys of ski superpipe. While Brecks pipe isn't the 22 foot beast of a pipe they have been training on but it was gloves off for all the big guns.

Justin Dorey and Simon Dumont came out swinging hard with their doubles and had a few bobbles to set them back in the points, however it was young Jossi Wells (Poles) who threw down 2 of the best runs we have ever seen out of the young kiwi to take home second behind Mike Riddle.

SCOTT Athletes Heat up at Dew Tour Breck

The open qualifiers are over here at the first stop of this seasons Dew Tour in Breckenridge, CO and several of the SCOTT Athletes are just getting warmed up. Elias Ambuehl came out on top in todays slopestyle qualifiers with teammates Ian Cosco (3rd), and Alex Schlopy (5th) hot on his heels.

Team Scott-Swisspower's winter activities

The cyclo-cross season is at full speed. Team SCOTT-Swisspower is present at the world cup races with Marcel Wildhaber in the elite category and Matthias Rupp in the U23. Our cross specialist Marcel recently won his first two pro races in Switzerland and is a common guest on the podium. Last weekend at the GP Wetzikon he finished 3rd behind French pro road rider Steve Chainel and Swiss champion Christian Heule. In his first year as U23, Matthias is struggling a bit riding the higher pace of the elite field. But his time will come.

In the younger categories SCOTT-Swisspower is dominating the Swiss cross scene. Junior Roger Walder has two victories under the belt and is aiming for the national title next month.

For 2010, the team will remain the same, except we added Andri Frischknecht as a new member riding in the Under 17. Frischi junior did not only make the team because of his dad managing the squad. He earned his spot by winning cyclo-cross bronze and MTB silver at nationals in 2009. This summer he won the Downieville Classic and in the current cross season so far all five races he entered.

Florian Vogel gets back to racing December 26th after a two week training camp in the south of France while Nino Schurter just got back from a vacation in the US. He traveled Arizona and California by motor home. Besides Roger Federer, ski stars Cuche and Janka , Schurter was nominated at the Credit Suisse Sport Awards for the Swiss athlete of the year. Cuche won the vote ahead of Federer.

I finished my traveling year with an amazing adventure trip to the heart of Africa. Rwanda had with its Tour of Rwanda for the first time an international UCI sanctioned road stage race. The sympathies for cycling in Rwanda are tremendous. Up to 200’000 people followed the race every day. The members of Team Rwanda I got to know three years ago riding the Cape Epic developed into national heroes. Imagine what kind of an idol someone like team rider Adrien Niyonshuti is to the children of Rwanda, in a country where few people ever get further than their hometown. Adrien raced the Tour of Ireland against Lance Armstrong this year. At the Tour of Rwanda he finished 3rd. The day after the tour was finished the annual “Wooden Bike Classic” took place. The people where so enthusiastic about this mountain bike event, that I decided to retire from my retirement and jumped in to the race with a barrowed bike. It was a big eye opener for me and got me back to reality. While in the world cup we talk about saving grams with carbon fiber and ceramic bearings, these guys are super stocked if the actually have a bike to ride. No matter if it only has one gear or no brakes at all.

The bicycle in Africa plays an important role, similar to car in the western world. Only that most of us have a car and in Africa owning a bicycle means a lot more. That’s why Tom Ritchey’s Project Rwanda is such a big help to the people of Rwanda. Already close to 4000 coffee bikes found it’s way to Africa. To learn more about this wonderful project visit: www.projectrwanda.org After the events we went to Ruhengeri, close to the volcano’s where the last gorillas hide, to visit the Project Rwanda’s headquarter. My friend Jock Boyer lives full time in Rwanda and is national coach of Rwanda. Jock was the first American to race the Tour de France and finished the tour 5 times. The riders live part time at the headquarter to get trained by him.

The best was still to come. With Jock, Tom Ritchey and his wife Martha we went on an enduro moto trip. 2100km off-road trough Rwanda, along lake Victoria trough Tanzania and Kenya. Not in a month, in 4 ½ days!!

None of us ever was in this area. So we had no idea what to expect.

What kind of roads we will find and if we could get enough fuel to get there. There was so much to see in the heart of Africa. Where people still live without electricity and running water. Where the western world has no influence yet. One thing is for sure. They have enough food and water and are sure happier than most of us. Our half way destination destination was the wildlife reserve of Masai Mara, where we most likely where the first ones to do a safari on a 650cc BMW Dakar. The wildlife was amazing. The whole trip was amazing. A truly pure adventure! One I will always keep in my best memories.

Martin and Teutenberg German cyclists of the year

Columbia-HTC's Tony Martin and Ina-Yoko Teutenberg were named 2009 Cyclist of the Year by the German cycling journal Radsport Monday. Twenty-four-year-old Martin was honored after an outstanding season during which he spent twelve days in the white jersey at the Tour de France, and took second overall in the Tour de Suisse.

Scott Neyedli celebrated a phenomenal end of the season with a second place at Ironman Western Australia and qualified for Ironman Hawaii 2010. The athlete from Scotland crossed the finish line after 8:17:47 hours behind the winner Patrick Vernay from France. Jimmy Johnson from Denmark became third. “This was one of my best competitions ever”, said the 32-years-old after his last race for the Commerzbank Triathlon Team. “It’s fantastic to have achieved another top placement for the Commerzbank Team. The last two years were wonderful with excellent conditions. I’m already looking forward to see the team on Hawaii 2010.”

The Dirksen Derby is back, December 13th, 2009

Oregon pro-rider Josh Dirksen and his sponsors have teamed up with Mt. Bachelor for the 3rd annual Dirksen Derby on Sunday, December 13th, 2009!

This years race will include the classic Snowboard divisions in Mens, Womens, and Groms, and the Sit-ski division. Also new to the event this year will be a Splitboard division where the toughest of the racers will be timed for their efforts going up the course as well as coming back down. Racers with the fastest times on the course will be rewarded with prizes from all of the sponsors including Salomon snowboards, Dakine, Bonfire, and Scott goggles. The registration fee will be $25 dollars on the morning of the event with 100% of the proceeds going to our friend Tyler Eklund and his quest to become the fastest quadriplegic Sit-skier in the world.

MEGA Genius, Bailly Maitre 2nd

French pilot and member of the XC Scott team France for 5 years , François Bailly Maitre, just finished 2nd at the Mega Avalanche race in La Réunion. The cross country expert took part in a DH marathon for the first time in his career. He came to the start with his Genius 10, a travel of 150/140 and a XC set up!

After a good start, he did the first part of the race in the top 10, then, thanks to his excellent endurance capacities, he came to the second position. In a more technical section, he did a few mistakes and lost a bit of time but not for long, since an asphalted climb was the next point on the program! Helped by his ultra light bike and the Twinloc system, François could accelerate and made the difference - maximum speed with great feelings! The finish on big stones was tough but no one in his wheel! François finished second of the Méga, behind Rene Wildhaber.

Athlete Watch: Early Season at Loveland with Justi...

Thanksgiving weekend in Summit County, Colorado can usually be summed up with one word, crowds. So how do you escape the crowds? The answer is easy, go to Loveland Ski Area. That is just what Justin Dorey, Keri Herman and members of the SCOTT USA Marketing department did over the turkey day break.

Justin and Keri are training for the upcoming season and can be found skiing around Summit County right now preparing for the Dew Tour. Dorey skied strong last season, pulling down several pipe podiums including winning the US Freeskiing Open. He is poised to be a threat this season in both pipe and slopestyle.

Keri is coming off a strong slopestyle season last year that included third at the first Dew Tour stop.

Columbia-HTC's Mark Cavendish has been named one of the Top Ten nominees for the BBC's Sports Personality of the Year. The BBC revealed Monday the shortlist featuring six-time Tour de France stage winner and star sprinter Mark Cavendish.

The shortlist was composed by a panel of 26 sports editors from British national and regional newspapers and magazines. The 10 nominees will be put to a public vote on the night of the live show, which will be broadcast at 1900 GMT, Sunday 13 December on BBC One.

The Columbia-HTC rider's nomination follows a hugely successful season of 24 victories, including three stage wins at the Giro d'Italia, the prestigious Milan-San Remo and the honor of being the only British cyclist to win 6 stages at the Tour de France.

Paris-Dakar not by car, but by bike

Dakar, Senegal, - The endurance bicycle race/expedition "Paris-Dakar by Bike" was a race between two Swiss youngsters Eric Voutaz and David Imboden. Voutaz showed up as the strongest and was 52 minutes ahead after a race of 7.200 kilometer. The podium was completed by Dirk Franckx from Belgium. Female winner was Toos van Beijsterveldt from The Netherlands.

"Paris-Dakar by Bike" is a unique cycling race/expedition which starts at the Eiffel Tower, crosses the Pyrenees, the Atlas Mountains and the Sahara desert. A group of 40 cyclists left Paris at September 6th to finish 10weeks later at Lac Rose near Dakar. The riders from 14 different countries had most days excellent cycling conditions, but had also to fight hail in Andorra, high temperatures in the Sahara and countless climbs between the French and Senegalese capital. It was already obvious from the beginning that the best cyclists came from Switzerland.

The youngsters Eric Voutaz, racing on a Scott cyclocross bike, and David Imboden arrived at most of the stages first. Many times they were accompanied by some of the other riders, but it were always the Swiss racers which were in camp first. Both of them also did this to support SOS-children villages and FXB, a NPO to fight poverty and aids.

It was the mountainous inland of Spain were Voutaz took the lead of an hour on Imboden. The Swiss bank employee could consolidate his lead on the African continent with the Atlas mountains, the never-ending Sahara and the flat, but hot, conditions in Mauritania and Senegal. Voutaz proved to be the best endurance athlete in the most diverse conditions, mentally as well as physically.

"Paris-Dakar by Bike" is more than a race. The majority of the riders do not compete. They cycle together at their own pace and enjoy the scenery and culture of the European and African continent. The riders ranged in the age from 25 to 65 years. Most of them managed to cycle every single kilometer and proved that the tour is doable for a wide range of active people.

"Paris-Dakar by Bike" is not organized in 2010, since “Bike-Dreams” organizes the second edition of "The Andes Trail", an 11,000 km Cyclingrace/expedition in South America. The fourth edition of Paris-Dakar by Bike is organized from September 4th till November 12th, 2011.

Wallisch and Ambuhl Podium in Barcelona

Last night in Barcelona, Spain SCOTT Team Members, Tom Wallisch (skis, poles, goggs) and Elias Ambuhl (poles, goggs) both made their way onto the podium in the downtown big air show. The night came down to a three jump final between Russ Henshaw, Tj Schiller, Tom Wallisch, and Elias Ambuhl. Riders needed to land two different tricks on three jumps and best two scores combined won. There was a little confusion when the scores were announced. The two scores showed Elias in second and Tom in third, however the scores were for the same trick which then moved Wallisch into second, and Elias took home third. Congrats to both riders on a job well done.

The Off Season with Alex Schlopy

Alex Schlopy is no stranger to the camera, he has been featured in movies by Teton Gravity Research, Warren Miller, Rage Films and more. Schlopy’s resume reads like a professional skier in their 20’s but he is just 17 years old. In addition to having his whole career ahead of him, Schlopy is still experiencing the joys of high school; girls, adolescence, fun, sports, homework. Wait a minute, HOMEWORK? That’s not fun, unless you get to share it with the world like this edit from Alex for his film class about his off season. Keep an eye out for Alex this winter on the Dew Tour and filming, he will be everywhere.

C'est une course unique, une distance commune pour les garçons et pour les filles. Immédiatement, la course féminine a attisé la curiosité de toutes et tous. A Sauclières, Maud Giraud (Scott, Raidlight), leader du TTN (Trail Tour National) avait déjà pris une avance de 3 minutes sur Laurence Klein, déclarée adversaire n°1, sur une partie plutôt roulante du parcours. Une façon de mener la course à sa main, de se comporter en patronne. « Je n'ai pas de tactique. En fait cette année j'ai passé un cap. Je suis partie à mon rythme. Ce matin, j'étais sur un petit nuage, j'avais l'impression d‘avoir des ressorts sous les pieds. » Derrière Corinne Raux arrivait à ce premier ravitaillement avec 3m50s de débours, Anne Valéro et Aurélia Truel étaient pointées à 5m. Catherine Dubois suivait ce duo. Alors que Karine Herry, « Madame Templiers » avec 9 succès, était à 10'.

Maud Giraud s'envolait vers une première victoire aux Templiers. Un succès qui s'accompagne du titre de championne de France après ses succès sur le TNT : Je ne me voyais pas gagner les Templiers. C'est une course historique, une référence comme peut l'être pour l'Ultra, l'UTMB. J'ai géré le titre et je me disais que si je figurais sur le podium, ce serait bien. Mais bon j'ai réussi à concilier les deux. J'ai prouvé ici que je pouvais gagner sur du roulant aussi. J'ai gagné aussi le Trail de la Côte d'opale. Cette saison, j'ai passé un cap. »

Quel tempérament ! Maman de trois enfants, cette athlète de 32 ans est une fille de la montagne même si ses racines sont du côté de Douai dans le Nord « nous partons là-bas dès demain pour quelques jours de vacances. » Elle aime dialoguer, en course avec ses adversaires, surtout avec le public : « c'est vrai j'aime bien le contact humain, c'est ma façon d'être. Je remercie les gens qui m'encouragent, je parle tout le temps (rires). En même temps, si j'arrive à parler, c'est un peu mon repère, c'est que je suis bien. » Elle n'a pas subi la concurrence des marathoniennes venues sur son terrain. « On a dîné ensemble hier avec Corinne Raux et Laurence Klein. Moi, la concurrence m'attire et c'est bien de gagner devant des filles fortes. » Et Laurence Klein, la championne de France de marathon, de féliciter la championne de France du Trail (qui succède à Kenza Pedrero, 15ème aujourd'hui) : « elle mérite amplement son titre de championne de France, elle est incontournable. »

Martin Jensen on third place

Triathlete Martin Jensen from Denmark was on the third place at the ITU Long Distance World Champion Chip in Perth/Australia. Over three km swimming, 80 km cycling and at least 20 km running it was very exciting until to the end of the race.

The final decision happened in the last few meters of the running split. Martin was only hidden by Timothy O’Donnell (USA) and the second Sylvian Sudrie. His time was 3h 49min 34sec. At least he miss just 1min 19sec for the victory. The basis for his success was an extraordinary strong performance on the bike. For sure the Scott Plasma Ltd was helping him to pass the cycling course in a fantastic time.

Didn't see it coming

So I guess you can say that no one really sees these things coming. I mean, I saw the 24 hours of Moab coming. I was ready for it. Trained, rested and ready. I had my mom and friends to help me with my Scott bikes, with my food, my Niterider lights, clothes and moral support.

What I didn’t see was crashing on the second lap and getting a trip to the emergency room. There I was stitched up very nicely after Dr. Love (no joke I swear that was her name) made sure I hadn’t done any damage to my exposed bone. It was just impressive that she stitched up my knee, as it was not the cleanest cut.

So, now what do I do? I mean, I can’t get back on my bike. The whole knee bending thing and ripping out the stitches that I so happily just spent 2 hours in the ER getting put in, wasn’t really doing it for me. So we went back to the race to see what was going on. I had no idea what I was going to do since it was hard enough to walk around.

But there I was. Cheering on other friends that were racing. A first time solo rider Liz, was in need of some good lights and since I had the best and wasn’t going to be using them I loaned them to her. It worked out. Her way was brightly lit all night. Also, for one of the guys from Crested Butte, racing on a team. He used my backup lights. At this point I would have given my bikes to someone in need.

I have to say I didn’t see it coming that this was going to be one of the hardest things I would ever have to watch. I am so glad that I could be there, though, cheering on, helping out, and hopefully being helpful, but….it never got easier to watch without having some sadness that I could not, and was not racing. This is my race. I love it. It is at the end of the season, and I have set the world record for the distance ridden by a women in 24 hours at this race. Was I content and happy? Not really, but I love this sport and it was better to be there helping out with some expertise than feeling sorry for myself at home.

So, no I didn’t really see this coming, but since I can look back now, I am hoping that some good came out of it.

Let’s just hope that next year isn’t like this one. Thanks again for all your support. I would never have been there in the first place. Here’s to keeping the dream alive!!!

Look for Wallisch this winter on the worldwide competition circuit including the X Games, Dew Tour, and tomorrow night at the London Freeze. Wallisch also plans to film with Level 1, 4bi9 and Field Productions. 132 victories in one season

After Marco Pinotti's win in the GP Citta di Stresa time trial, this brings down the curtain on the 2009 season for Columbia-HTC, and it also brings the men's team's final tally of season wins to 86 - one more than in 2008.

The Italians victory came in the last race for Columbia-HTC this year, a season in which the men's and women's squads have taken a combined total of 132 victories by 21 different riders.

Who is Dane Tudor

Flashback 2005 - I was sitting at the Bottom of the US Extreme Freesking Championships in Crested Butte, CO sipping a cold PBR when I first saw Dane Tudor ski. This was a few years before becoming the Team Manager at SCOTT but realized that I was witnessing someone with a promising future in skiing. At just 15 Dane had just flashed a line down Bodybag in Crested Butte that would have had him sitting in first place in the Pro Men’s division, however at only 15 he had to compete in the Juniors.

His line had everyone at the bottom talking about the little kid from AK who just flashed a line that had put the likes of Wendy Fisher, Seth Morrison, and more on the podium in Crested Butte before. Dane went on to win his first of several junior big mountain titles that year in Crested Butte by a landslide, and his winning ways were started. When his resume came across my desk just after I started at SCOTT I immediately picked up the phone to call and welcome him to the team.

It was only about 2 to 3 years ago Dane decided to start taking his already solid big mountain skills to the park. Needless to say it did not take long for him to develop the skills it takes to compete all over the world in Slopestyle competitions. These days Dane can be found everywhere from a Heli in AK with Abma and Poorboyz, Dew Tour Stops, or winning the Canadian Freeskiing Open. Somewhere in all these trips he also managed to score the first 8 minutes of Poorboyz Latest release, Everyday is a Saturday. Just ask Mark Abma about Dane, “Seems like he has the makings for greatness. Growing up at a mountain like Red, Dane has been studying lines since a young age. He was able to put all this together and shred lines like a seasoned veteran this year on his first heli trip ever in AK.”

These days Dane has been hanging out in Alaska spending down time at home by riding moto, and hitting the gym to stay in shape. During this time Dane is still a business man working on his website, www.danetudor.com and traveling to premieres all over the globe. On his travels he also swung buy IF3 to pick up hardware in the form of, “Male Performer of the Year,” which has to be one of the biggest moments of Dane’s life this early in his career. Quite the honor when going up against the likes of Simon Dumont, Tanner Hall, Sammy Carlson, Seth Morrison, and many more.

85th win for Columbia-HTC, 20th for Greipel

André Greipel sprinted to victory in the Paris-Bourges Classic on Thursday, netting Team Columbia-HTC's 85th win of the 2009 season. Greipel was the fastest in the bunch sprint which decided the 193.3- kilometre event, and resulted in the sprinter's 20th victory of 2009.

Following Bernhard Eisel's victory in Paris-Bourges in 2008, Greipel's triumph is Columbia-HTC's second straight victory in the French Classic. "I never expected to get so many wins this season, particularly after a tough beginning to the year," commented Greipel. "But today I won again, even though we had to work really hard to get it and there were attacks all the way through. My team-mates got me in the right position, and I did a very long sprint, from about 300 metres to go. Haedo almost got past me, but when he tried to overtake me he had to move out, and the wind made it harder for him. So I eventually beat him by about half a bike length."

With an early move of around 20 riders getting away, Greipel said he hadn't really expected a bunch sprint to materialise. "Fortunately we had two guys in there, [Morris] Possoni and [Vicente] Reynes, the break's lead stayed at around two and a half minutes, and so we didn't have to work so much. Then the best moment for me came when Bernie [Eisel] said to me, 'Hey, relax, we'll get the break back and we'll get you to that sprint, too'."

Greipel's victory means the Columbia-HTC men's team has now matched their 2008 total of 85 wins in one season.
