Well we finally got back on a gate .1st race since US OPEN. went pretty good went 2-1 for 1st overall in the 65cc nov. then went 3-3 for 3rd in the 65cc open (ran in to some big bore bike's both running 72cc kit's) E-STREET is always a good time. BY far Gav's favorite track.Had a lot of fun and looking forward to the next one!!!!

Well for only being on a bike 4 times since Loretta's. We had a good time...Gavin was able to go 5-5 for 4th overall. pretty cool not having to work on the bike at all!!!! What a great deal that KJSC is, met some cool people. Gav was stoked to meet all his hero's in person everybody from Bubba to Reed to Dungey and the list goes on and on...... we even met Chuck Ladell in the airport. Speaking of that we flew in on thur. night raced fri night, raced sat. night .Then we got up @ 4am sun morn ;jumped on a flight back home for a 9:00 am pop warner football game.We had to support the boys we were undefeated @ 5-0.Made it to the game. Gav played pretty solid; made a couple back field tackles & had a nice punt. All this and celebrated his 9th birthday during it all.......he's still going !!! but i'm shot ;later.....

HOT SUMMER NIGHTS @ PERRIS

We took a trip down south this last weekend to pick up a bike that MIKE @ STORM CYCLES is going to let us use for LORETTA'S this year. while we were down there we caught rnd. 2 of the HOT SUMMER NIGHTS @ PERRIS RACEWAY all new track pretty good. Gavin had an alright night, not his best ;but he came away with a 2nd overall in the 7-8 mod and a 3rd overall in the 7-8 stock. We got to spend some some time with some good friends the PURCELL'S and they turned us on to REDONDO BEACH. Cool spot wouldn't mind going back on a little surf trip. that's it for now we're off to E-STREET this weekend to do some testing on the bikes.

We made our way to Marysville this week ; Gavin went to a week long mx camp with Scott Davis.Lot's of fun; he rode the 65cc all week. Sat. night was rnd 5 of the summer series @ Riverfront park. He rode 2 class' 50cc 7-8 yr old and the 50cc. open. He rode both class' on the stock bike; got all 4 hole shot's and went on to take the overall in both class' . Next -up it's time to start training for the DODGE NATIONAL @ HANGTOWN the first week in Oct.

We very excited we got our first 65cc. Gavin's got a couple of day's on it ; he difinitely is having some growing pain's with the clutch and shifting part of it. He love's the suspension and the power (when he's in the right gear) GOOD STUFF THOUGH we're having some fun with it. He's off to the Scott Davis MX camp for a week 65 only....we'll see how that goes. After this week it's time to start to get focused on the Dodge and Branson. I'll try to keep posting but we're very busy this time of year.

Just 7 weeks after his operation, we got back on the gate this weekend @ E-STREET.Although he's way off his previous pace Gavin was able to take 1ST in both the 7-8 yr old, and in the 50cc open.Now it's off to DILLWYN ,VIRGINIA for the northeast area qualifier for LORETTA'S. We chose to go here cause we can buy an extra month of rehab before he has to race the regional (JUNE 23-24 SHIPPENSBURG,PA).That is if we are lucky enough to make it out of DILLWYN.

BLOWN OUT KNEE

Gavin had a little bad luck this past week; while training for WORLD MINI'S he went down and blew out his a.c.l and m.c.l. He had surgery on Mon. 3 /12/07 everything went really good thanks to DR. TING AND TUAN!! Those guy's are awesome!!!!

Today was his first day of physical therapy, everything look's good and we're shooting to be back on the bike for MAY 12-13 LORETTA'S QUALIFIER @ HONEY LAKE. Our finger's are crossed.

Well it was back to L.A for rnd.5 of the GOLD CUP. Gavin was able to pull really good starts all day worst was a third!! he went 3-4 for 4th overall in the super pee wee out of 25 entries; and then went 7-6 for 6th overall in the 7-8 yr. class out of 22 entries. good weekend, great weather ,good friends!!! Next up a local race @ Hollister them WORLD MINI'S.....VEGAS here we come....

This weekend we went south to avoid the rain...... It didn't work. Sat. prac. was good Gavin had lap times in the top 5. Sun. the rain came and just never stopped! He didn't run prac., just waited for the first moto.In his first moto he went 4th out of 35; then one rider got D.Qed for cutting the track so that moved him up to the 3rd spot. One moto was enough; we packed up and got under way on our 8 hour drive home. But come to find out they did end-up running the second moto's, bummer for us but at least we made it home at a decent hour for school the next day. next stop SNOW BOARDING LAKE TAHOE!!!!

AMP WINTER SERIES RND. 3 @ HANGTOWN

We ran HANGTOWN this weekend (2-4-07) for rnd. 3 of the AMP WINTER SERIES. Beautiful weekend weather wise, Gavin had a good weekend; he was able to go 4 for 4 , he got the hole shot in every moto.In the 7-8 yr old class he went 2-2 for 2nd out of 18, and in the 50cc open he went 2-2 for 2nd out of 23. This coming weekend it's back L.A to GLEN HELEN for rnd. 3 of the CALIFORNIA GOLD CUP, we'll keep you posted thanks for your interest...........

Rnd. 1 went all right; very cold 14 degree's on sat. morn. Gavin was able to go 6-17 for 10th out of 34 rider's.As the results show, he had a top five start in the 2nd moto but went down on the first lap. By the time he got up and going he was dead last, but he never gave up; put in a good ride and worked his way back up to the 17th spot.In the Super Pee Wee he went 10-8 for 7th out of 28 rider's.With a HOLE SHOT in moto 2. Next up AMP@ HOLLISTER,CA.

GOLDEN STATE NATIONALS RND #1

We ran the opening rnd. of THE GOLDEN SATATE NATIONALS this weekend. Gavin had a good weekend rode good and hard right up to the last moto. He was able to go 3-2 for 2nd overall in the 50cc open class. Then in the 7-8 yr old class he went 3-3 for third overall. Good weekend, i think the time off for the holiday break did us all some good.Next up is rnd. one of the CALIFORNIA GOLD CUP @ L.A.C.R.

DODGE NATIONAL

Dodge went as well as we could ask for Gavin went 2-3 going 2nd into the final moto behind Sean Cantrel.He got an o.k start not the best but quickly worked his way into a battle with Mike Mosiman. Gavin was able to pull the double double on the up hill infield part of the track and Mikey wasn't he went down. It looked like that was all it took to lock down 2nd overall; but with just 4 turns to go Gavin's bike sucked a ring and that was it..... He got pushed across the line for 11th place and the week was over.....ended up 6th overall in the stock ;and went 4-7-7 (on a borrowed bike from Sean Cantrel) to take the 7th overall spot in the mod.

Rnd 2 of the Trans Cal Nationals was at riverfront park Marysville CA. Gavin was able to go 1-1 in the 4-6yr. he was also able to catch 2 of the 7-8 yr olds that went off the first gate.... In the 50cc open class he was able to go 2-2 on his cm (4-6 yr old bike) that was good enough for 2 nd overall..next up rnd 3 in Dixon Ca.

BACK ON TRACK!!!!

Back On Track....we kicked off the CMC TRANS CAL NATIONALS last weekend. Gavin was able to go 1-1 in the 4-6yr. Coming off the 2nd gate in a field of 8 4-6 yr and 8 7-8yrs he was able to pass up to the 3rd poss. in the 7-8 yrs class which went off the 1 st gate. In the open class riding his stock 4-6 bike he was able to go 3-4 for the 3rd overall spot in field of 12.VERY HAPPY TO BACK ON TRACK ; looks like maybe something good did come out of LORETTA`S , he really feels like he has something to prove.......next up rnd 2 of the CMC TRANS CAL, then it`s the DODGE NATIONAL in Sac....

LORETTA`S 2006

Well Loretta`s didn`t go quite as planned; we had some really bad luck.....Moto 1 he drew the 8th gate pick we were really stoked on that but it all went down hill from there. Gavin was running in the 15th spot and on the move, but the stator went out and I had to push him across the line for the 30th spot. Moto 2 didn`t go much better got abad start and got tangled up with a large pack of kid`s, finally fought through them and went down twice on the last lap.Moto 3 bike died 20yrds off the gate couldn`t get it going something stuck in the main jet, D.N.F.....As far as the racing went very tough week, but as far as the family vaction and our trip to Tenn. awesome!!!! we`d do it all again tomarrow if we could. Gavin now has a new found drive and feels that he has some unfinished business and diffitely some thing to prove. He was asking to ride before our 43 hour drive was even over... and he did ; he rode that night . He showed us a lot of heart for such a young guy.

Young Tomberlin tears up motocross WHEN THE question is: What sport would be good to keep my 6-year-old occupied? The answer usually isn`t: Give him a motorcycle. Yet that`s just what Len Tomberlin did, and it seems to be working out splendidly. And Gavin Tomberlin isn`t just speeding around vacant lots and tearing up flower beds, either. He`s one of the top amateur motocross riders in the nation in his age bracket, having recently qualified for the AMA Amateur National Motocross Championships in Hurricane Mills, Tenn., July 31-Aug. 8. Although he`s only 6, the Half Moon Bay youngster has been riding for two years. "It was just meant to be, I think," his dad, Len, said. "He would ride with me in the basket on my motorcycle when he was very little, and just loved it. We finally gave him his own bike, and he just took off." Gavin, a kindergartner at Hatch Elementary, also enjoys wake boarding, baseball and soccer. But that`s off the record. When asked what he likes to do, the only thing he will admit to is motocross. "It`s a lot of fun; the best thing in the world," said Gavin. "I love the competition." What`s the worst thing about motocross? "Getting stuck in ruts." Gavin qualified for the AMA Nationals (called the Loretta Lynns by circuit regulars, because the finals are held at the Loretta Lynn Ranch) by finishing in the top 14 in his area qualifier, and then coming in fifth at the Southwest Regional competition at the Glen Helen track in San Bernardino last weekend. By qualifying for nationals, Gavin is one of the 42 best riders in the world in his age group - and one of the 14 best in the Western U.S. Gavin almost won the Northwest Regional at Honey Lake in Milford but was involved in a crash and ended up finishing in 14th place. "He got tangled up with a lapper (a driver who has been lapped by other racers)," said Len, "and went down. Other parents ran in to pick up their kids and take them off the track, but they didn`t re-start Gavin`s bike. So Gavin picked it up and managed to start it himself, and finish the race." That`s the thing that motocross onlookers will tell you about Gavin Tomberlin`s racing style. He`s usually not the most skilled rider on the track, but he`s always the most persistent. "He`s very competitive," said his dad. "He just never, ever gives up." Gavin rides a 50cc Cobra - kind of the Mini-Cooper of motorcycles that was designed just for motocross -------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Advertisement -------------------------------------------------------------------------------- racing. His sister, Morgan, 9, also races (she rides a 65cc), and was the CMC TransCal 50 Beginners champ this season. Traveling the motocross circuit can be very expensive and time consuming. The Tomberlins have already traveled to competitions in Reno, Las Vegas and Arizona this year, and are currently trying to figure out how they are going to get Gavin and his bike to Tennessee for the nationals. "A lot of families get a big motor home and a trailer, and travel to each stop," said Len, a plumber who is a fifth-generation resident of Half Moon Bay. "But we can`t afford that. I got a camper shell for my pickup and put a foam mattress in there, and that`s where we sleep." The family has been looking into renting a larger truck for the trip, but aren`t sure they can afford that. One thing is for certain: They`ll get Gavin there somehow. "This is his life right now," Len said. "I think most of the appeal is just the freedom of it. Once the helmet`s on, mom and dad can`t tell you what to do. You start up and away you go."

LORETTA`S S.W REGIONAL GLEN HELEN

Alright ;well he got in.....Gavin was able to take the 5th spot this past weekend @ Glen Helen. He went down in the first moto but fought back to the 11th spot, then he took a 3rd in the second moto, in moto 3 he was running in the 4th spot made a 6yr. old bad decsion, & took a really bad line trying to make a pass for 3rd & fell back to 12th or 13th, then he was able to put a charge on and worked his way back to the 7th spot.so he went 11-3-7 and that was good enough for the 5th qualifing spot.So we are packing our bags and are heading to Ponca first and then Loretta`s. LORETTA`S N.W REGIONAL HONEY LAKE

We had the n.w regional for Loretta`s this weekend @ Honey Lake (Reno).Gavin was able to get the hole shot in 2 out of the 3 moto`s.He held the lead in every moto @ one point or another.In moto 1 he had the lead spot but came up on a lapper on lap 3 and the lapper went down; Gavin had no where to go,he wadded it up.....got back on and was able to finish in the 6th spot.big bummer but came back to go 6-3-4 to take the 5th spot. So now we`re headed to the s.w regional @ Glen Helen in 2 weeks .if he can clear the lapper`s we should come out all right.(see results @ mxsports.com)

We wrapped up the qualifing for Lorretta`s this weekend @ Honey Lake.Gavin`s in for both the s.w & the n.w. This weekend went pretty good had some good racing with some really fast kid`s. He went down in moto 2, but was still able to finish 3rd. Gavin came away with a 2-3 finish which gave him third overall. See results @ mxsports.com. WORLD MINI`S

Well we just got home from a 2 week racing road trip.Started off @ rnd 1 of the C.M.C Spring Nationals @ Glen Helen. Gavin went 2-1 for first overall. Then it was off to Vegas for the World Mini`s;@ the end of the week he ended up getting 16th in the 4-6 yr old mod. class .He had a little bad luck in the 4-6 yr old stock class, he was running 10th but fell and dropped back to 16th,he was able to work his way back to 12th but ended up finishing in the 14th spot, for 17th overall.

What a trip, 21hrs. on the road thur.But we made it ; thanks to Auntie Denise and her motor home and to papa Dennis and nonnie Betty for the road side entertainment. That family time is just price less!!!The racing really didn`t go all that great . Gavin wasn`t really on his game all weekend. But he was still able to come away with a 6-9 finish to take the 9th qualifing spot.So we`re off to Glen Helen for the regional. First we`ve got a Area Qualifier for the northwest. Just in case we have a weekend like we did this weekend @ a regional .All in all trip was good, but we can`t wait to be home.........

Friday, March 17, 2006 Three locals head the class in motocross competition for kids Morgan Tomberlin, left, Gavin Tomberlin and Hayden von Almon took home an array of prizes for finishing at the top of the winner`s podium at the 2006 Golden State Motocross Nationals. By MARK FOYER--Half Moon Bay Review It didn`t look good for 9-year-old Morgan Tomberlin of El Granada. Her quest to win the 50 Big Bike Beginner Series took a serious detour after the first of four races. The engine on her motocross bike quit. She couldn`t finish that race and was not certain of making it to the second race. When all seemed lost, a family from Reno, Nev., loaned her another bike to ride. She went on to win the next race and the 2006 Continental Motosport Club Golden State Motocross Nationals, held Feb. 25-26 at the Glen Helen Raceway Park in San Bernardino. Her younger brother Gavin, 6, came away with the 50cc title for ages 4 to 6. His pal Hayden von Almon, also 6, was second in that division. Morgan Tomberlin was confident entering the competition. She had proven herself during the season. The confidence turned after the first race. "Something happened to the clutch," she said. While her dad Len worked on the bike, she got a loaner bike. She won that race and waited for the next race, the next day. Len Tomberlin ended up getting a new engine for the bike. By Sunday, she had her old bike, with a new engine. She succeeded in the third race, putting her in contention to win the title. All that stood in the way was a racer from Marysville. The two developed a nice friendship along the way. "Before the race, we were friends," Tomberlin said. "But once the helmet went on, we were all business." She won that race to take the title. "I felt bad for (my friend)," Tomberlin said. "But I was happy for myself." She made a point of searching out the people from Reno who had lent her a bike. "I said thank you to them 50 times," she said. It was Gavin Tomberlin`s first time competing there. He was confident going into the race. He wanted to win, but if he was going to lose it would be to only one person, von Almon. "Hayden is my best friend," he said. For his part, von Almon, a Miramar resident, was never nervous or scared - even approaching one jump that was so steep riders couldn`t see the bottom at first. "I knew there was a bottom there," von Almon said. In the end, his effort was good enough to finish second. "I was very happy for Gavin," von Almon said. "He did a good job." Another series starts up shortly. A top-12 finish there qualifies riders to participate in the nationals, to be held from July 31 through Aug. 5 in Tennessee. Finals CMC Goldenstate Nationals

We did our first trip down south to the L.A area, The finals of the CMC Goldenstate Nationals @ Glen Helen. Gavin was able to wrap up the 50cc 4-6 yr old series title, his sister Morgan was also a series champ in the 50cc. big bike beg. class.Both kid`s got a ton of really nice prizes, but the favorite had to be the new Diamond Back bikes. All in All good weekend next stop Arizona for a Lorretta`s qualifier March 18-19.
