CHEYNE MAGNUSSON WINS SECOND ANNUAL NIXON HIGH TIDE HOLD’EM IN TAVARUA

The Nixon High Tide Hold'Em is an invitation-only event which pits some of action sports' biggest names against each other in a series of friendly competitions ranging from poker to ping-pong, Guitar Hero to fishing and spear fishing along with two separate surf challenges. The format of The High Tide Hold'Em is friendly and informal and every event is peer-judged. The High Tide Hold'Em gives invitees the opportunity to showcase some of their talents in a variety of challenges that are not exclusive to surfing.

Maui's Cheyne Magnusson earned the overall winning title at this year's event by consistently placing in the top three winner slots in three out of seven of the week's events. Said Cheyne of his first time participating in the High Tide Hold'Em: "I am so psyched to have been a part of this year's event. The main objective was to have fun and that took the pressure off! Being here was more like a vacation with your friends than a high-pressure contest." Cheyne walked away with an armful of prizes which included a Mac i-book, an Olympus waterproof digital camera, a custom Riffe spear-gun and an invitation to next year's High Tide Hold'Em event.

The most competitive of the week's events was the surf contest, which was won by Carlsbad's Ricky Whitlock. During his week in Tavarua, Ricky consistently charged the hardest and was the most enthusiastic in the water, earning him the respect and votes of fellow participants at the event. Nipping at his heels for the top surfing title was Hawaii's Casey Brown who nearly took the first place honors but missed out by only a handful of votes. Last year's High Tide Hold'Em overall winner, Amion Goodwin, and Cheyne Magnusson tied for third place and rounded out the remaining slots for this competition. "Winning this one event was way better than winning any other surf contest I have been in," explains an enthusiastic Ricky after having won the surf title. "I loved being a part of this trip!"

SURF EXPO RESULTS AND PICS

The results and pictures are in from the 2008 Surf Expo in Orlando Fl. The show was a success and the good times flowed smoothly once again this year. We were happy to be one of the few surfboard companies who's product is 100% American Made and Handshaped. Our new organic cotton tee line got a good response this year as well as our new Chem Flex Foil Fin, and the Chemistry Collective boards were a hit as usual. The crew got together for the 3rd year in a row at Hooters, and this year the day we chose fell on the Jacksonville Jaguars playoff game. So the place was at maximum capacity.We would like to thank all that helped make this show a memorable one and we look forward to next year.

The holiday gift giving spirit was in full effect this year when employees of Active Ride Shop Temecula wanted to get their manager and our good friend, Will Barrazza a unique gift. Will is a loyal Chemistry rider and has a pretty nice quiver already, so making him something new and fresh presented a challenge. Jason Bennett finally came up with the idea of making Will an Alchemist Remix (available '08), hooking up the 5 fin setup, and designing a unique tail inspired by the Cadillac CTS. He ended up calling the design the Chem Caddy and Will was psyched! Check the pics below.

CHEMISTRY ADDS NEW JERSEY’S OWN MIKE GLEASON TO THE TEAM

After months of speculation and rumors, Mike Gleason has joined the small and exclusive team of Chemistry Surfboards. Hailing from Long Branch, New Jersey, Mike joins the team as the only pro rider from the east coast. Mike is a former Smith Optics Garden State Grudge Match champ and one of the featured riders on Volcom's surf team. "We decided Mike was a good fit for the program shortly after I spent time with him on a trip to France this past September with the Nixon team," says Jason Bennett. "He has a great attitude and is definitely one of the standouts in the water when the waves are good." Gleason joins Cheyne Magnusson, Thomas "T-Grom" Clarke, Chris Abad, and Jason Bennett on Chemistry's pro team. He will also have his own signature model board in the 2008 lineup. We look forward to keeping Mike on great handshaped surfboards throughout his promising professional career.

THE 11TH ANNUAL SURF FOR THE SEA CONTEST

The 11th Annual Surf for the Sea surf contest was held at the Oceanside Pier on Saturday and Sunday, September 29 & 30, 2007. This surfing event is in loving memory of the late Harry Bennett, Steve Leighton, Tore Bonura, Chuck"Clubber" Hundley, Banning Capps and John Craven. They are all local surfers who have passed away. This is a memorial benefit for the Environment with all proceeds going to the Surfrider Foundation-San Diego and other environmental organizations that help to raise awareness and help protect our ocean, waves and beaches. Over 150 competitors were treated to awesome summer like conditions with 2 to 4 foot surf. A fun time was had by all and competitors received an event T-shirt, lunch catered by Johnny Manana's Restaurant and a chance at raffle prices including 5 surfboards.

Tiago Pires holds the title for the 8th Annual Nixon Surf Challenge. We were blessed with a 6-8 foot swell for the final day of the Nixon Surf Challenge. Although a grey drizzling day, it was by far the best waves ever had at the contest.

Surfers sleepily arrived to the beach at noon, after an eventful evening that kicked off with Sunny Abberton presenting in person his moving documentary, The Bra Boys, followed by dinner at the spectacular La Perla Restaurant, which has the most magical view of San Sebastian and stunning Basque cuisine. After dinner the crew took off to take over the Old Town living up to the Surf Challenge's reputation, good times, fun atmosphere with great friends!

Starting the day with the quarter finals, standouts were Spain’s Gony Zubizaretta, Franco-Brazilian Eric Rebiere, Jonathan Gonzales from the Canaries, Tim Boal from France, Portugal’s Tiago Pires along with Puerto Rican Dylan Graves and Cheyne Magnusson from Maui. Gony broke his board in the shore break, Jonathan demonstrated why he is one of the best European surfers and Tiago proved that being number 3 on the WQS was no fluke. Dylan and Cheyne showed that they are a part of the new generation of high power surfers from the US. All advanced into the semi-finals.

The first heat of the semi’s saw European’s Tim Boal, Benjamin Sanchis and Jonathan Gonzales matched up with Dylan Graves. Dylan and Jonathan both scored big barrels and large open-faced waves, while Tim Boal and Benjamin Sanchis both struggled to find good waves. Second heat of the semi-finals, Tiago, Eric and Joan Duru found themselves up against Hawaiian Cheyne Magnusson. Tiago surfed the best heat from the contest scoring a perfect 10 and a high 9 all while catching twice as many waves as any other competitor in the heat. Dylan also found a huge barrel and a nice open face wave to help him push through to the final.

The finals started out with Cheyne Magnusson jumping to a commanding lead, scoring both an 8 and a 6. However, in the last 15 minuets, Jonathon and Tiago both turned it on and secured high scoring waves to supersede Dylan and Cheyne. It was a tight battle between Jonathan and Tiago, and in the end it was Tiago who edged out Jonathan to secure the title of the 8th Annual Surf Challenge.

Here are some of the pics from Cheyne Magnusson's trip to Japan. Cheyne was over there for the first part of August and lucked into the first typhoon swell of the season. The Japanese bros he was staying with said it was some of the best waves they have gotten in a while. Chemistry Japan's Keigo Sawai was on site to show Cheyne how the Japanese Drinking Team does it and had Cheyne feeling right at home.

Chemistry team rider Thomas Clarke has returned from Mainland Mexico for the third time. This summer has been good to Thomas for waves. Everytime he has gone down to the Huatulco area in Mainland Mexico, he has scored rippable waves. After aquiring Volcom as his clothing sponsor and SunDiego Boardshops taking good care of him, he has been able to travel alot more. Now all he needs is his drivers license so he can move around town a bit better.

Suprisingly Chemistry's Cheyne Magnusson returned from Bali. After spending over a month in paradise, Cheyne decided to come home and regroup. He ended up not missing much at home because the 6 weeks he was gone only one significant swell came. So once again his timing was impeccable and he scored. Surfing everyday in at least chest high waves turned out to be the best way to spend a majority of his summer. Upon returning he jumped right into the US Open zoo for promos and immediately after to Japan for promos. Here are some pictures of the good times.

X GAMES 13 - CHEMISTRY STYLE

X-Games 13 will be televised on Aug. 2-5 and is promised to be the best one yet. Chemistry's very own Jason Bennett and Willie Smith were invited to judge the surfing event in Puerto Escondido, Mexico as well as do a ton of surfing of their own. With summer upon us it wasn't an easy task to leave the trenches of the factory during full bore production to go and work at a surf event. It became much easier when we stepped off the plane in to a good sized south swell and exceptional weather. With Wally Puha and Michael Baron taking care of the home front, we began to relax a bit and indulge in the fact that were working a few hours a day and surfing the rest. The event was phenomenal, with waves the entire time and the talent pool off the charts. It wasn't hard to watch or judge, it was actually extremely entertaining. The commissioner of the NSL, Brad Gerlach made a Nostradamus-like claim before the event saying,"This is shaping up to be the best X Games yet." "When the drama unfolds, the surf community is going to get a great show and the top guys will be frothing for a spot on next year's team." When it came time to celebrate Chemistry's very own Chris Abad's birthday, it was done so in fine form. As always the party involved the closest friends and prettiest girls enjoying themselves in the comfort of Abad's party palace. The beer flowed all night and the dance floor was never empty. He claims next year is going to be bigger and better. Hopefully the little guy makes it to next year.

After showing the surfing world his skills in the water, Abad decided to do what he does best, party. Known for his ablility to bring people together and have a good time, Abad wasn't afraid to throw an afterparty at his house with friends, drinks, and girls. After spending a whole week down at the Surfbout it was good to let loose and get a little creepy. Conversations flowed all night and the dance floor was always occupied. The Extreme Dancing Award goes to Sebastian "SeaBass" Zietz, and the You Got Way Too Wasted Award goes to Parrish Byrne.

ABAD HAS STRONG SHOWING @ JEEP - BODY GLOVE SURF BOUT

Chemistry's Chris Abad had an amazing week in the Jeep - Body Glove Surf Bout at Lower Trestles. Abad started in the very first round of the event and made it through 6 heats to the quarterfinals, placing equal 9th out of 192 competitors and pocketing $1500. Not only did he take out a few giants in the event he also posted the highest single wave score of the event. According to the event website, "Chris Abad produced the maneuver of the event this afternoon with an inverted full-rotation air reverse putting the beach crowd of surfers and spectators on their feet. The incredible ride garnered Abad the event-high single wave score of a 9.60 out of a possible 10 and advancement into round four."I was just sitting there for ages and wasn't getting any waves and I was getting really bummed," Abad said. "Then that right came in and lined up and it just kept going. I was just really lucky that I could let loose on it and I am stoked to get through another round. The set up here at Lowers is so perfect for a competition and I am psyched to be doing well in the event." We were all super psyched on Abad's performance this week and hope he can keep it going.

T-GROM RETURNS FROM MEXICO (finally)

Chemistry's Thomas Clarke has finally returned home after a three week long trip to Mainland Mexico. He returns with stories of fun surf as well as a south of the border face tan. The trip went from Pasquales with the Sun Diego surf team to Barra with Volcom, getting waves the entire time. Pulling off full marathon sessions was the norm with the boys sometimes surfing up to 10 hours in a day. Now back home with his family and friends, Thomas is looking forward to finishing the NSSA season and upcoming trips. Check out more photos from the trip and his bio at Sundiego.com.

CHEMISTRY TEAM CONFERENCE - BAJA

Easter weekend the Chemistry team joined forces in Baja. The guys called Los Gaviotas homebase and Rosarito the battlefield. Cheyne Mags, Abad, T-Grom, and J Bennett were geared up and ready for great surf and good times . It ended up mainly good times considering there wasn't much surfing going on. It was a rare occassion to get the whole team together because of everyones conflicting schedules (Cheyne in Maui, T-Grom in school, Jason in the shaping room, and Abad watching T.V.) so to have all the boys together and psyched was an amazing accomplishment.

After months of riding huge longboards and desiring to rip, former Pro Bowl Linebacker for the San Diego Chargers and future Hall of Famer, Junior Seau came to us to make him a high performance board. He was flat out tired of seeing guys twice his age with pot bellies on shortboards doing progressive moves. With that in mind as well as the fact that he is 6'3 and 255lbs of pure muscle, we came up with the Alchemist model, (8'6 x 24 x 3 1/2 triple wing swallow). Upon seeing his new board he claimed, "I'm gonna be taking it to another level on this!" With that in mind, look out for him at a break near you.

CHEMISTRY NORCAL CREW BATTLE SHARK INFESTED WATERS

The Chemistry NorCal Crew score fun waves and somehow keep all of their limbs while surfing a spot notorious for Great Whites. We were instructed not to expose the name of this shark breeding ground even though it is pretty well known. Those norcal guys are always so paranoid for some reason. Anyways, the guys looked like they got some really good ones and their surfing didnt look that bad either.
