We had great weather in Santa Cruz with very subtle winds. The police came by three times and were very nice. The third one we had to go so we only got results in one direction on the 50.

Oregon State Games 2008

Pleasant surprise to find out yesterday morning that I placed 3 rd in the 100 cone masters slalom event in Salem Oregon at the "Oregon Games". John Ravitch and I left the event early to catch our flights. I knew I had placed fourth overall on the 100 cone 6 foot course but didn't know I medaled for the second year in a row in the master division. I'm very stoked. John qualified first in the slalom cross and then we had to take off. Great weekend. Thanks Pat!

Hybrid Results:
Tay Hunt (Famed Upland Skatepark Rider) came in first
Cory Moy second
Brad Jackman third

Giant slalom Results:
John Striker First and a gold medal
Tay Hunt second with the silver
Brad Jackman third with the bronze.

Sunday started with the tight slalom, which was a timed event where racers choose either the hard or easy course.

In the hard course, there are 100 cones spaced 6.5 feet apart. The easier course had 80 cones spaced 8 feet apart.

Riders choosing the harder course will place higher than those choosing the easier course, and if a rider hits more than 10 cones or misses any cones, he or she will be disqualified for that run.

100 Cone Challenge

In the masters division, Dan Miszewski earned the gold with a time of 25.26, Jackman acquired the silver with a time of 25.356, and Judi Oyama, the only female racer, took home the bronze with a time of 29.076 seconds. All three racers were in the hard lane.

Beginning Skateboard Class in Santa Cruz

March 1, 2008 at the Santa Cruz Skate park. Last class was super fun. We had 12 kids 9 were 5-9 years old. I teach since parents ask me all the time and my kids wanted me to teach them at the park. It is hard to teach your child if you do not skate to begin with. Gary Holl and a few other skaters will be teaching with me. Gary is the current World Champion Freestyle and 360 skater who has helped me teach every class. Sign up isn't up yet. I will post when it is. This is a two hour class.

Slalom Skateboard World Championships

Got back from worlds. I missed my flight bag check in by 10 minutes (5:20 am) so I had to fly to Miami-LA and then to San Jose to get home. It took 5 hours longer but was glad to come home on Monday. The flights were so close together she double booked me just in case I missed my flights, but I made each one just in time and picked my kids up from school. Back to reality, dinner, homework, laundry...
Thanks to the DHB crew for a great time. They put on an amazing event. Marion thanks for four days of great skating fun. I know you guys worked long hours months prior and during the event. I placed second overall against Lynn Kramer the 5x world champion which was quite an honor. I tried to give her a run for her money. She is FAST! I placed second in the hybrid and tight a third in the giant slalom. Watching young Ella was a treat. She is the future for the women's as well as Laura, Julie and Sarah. The youth needs to keep the sport moving forward. Cat and Julie did great as well. Three days of slalom racing fun. The open class group was fast as usual. It's great to see Martin, Joe and Zach blaze the hill as well as veterans like Jackman! The pro events rocked as well. Fast and clean was key.

Thanks to everyone that came up to me and gave me great words of encouragement and kudos. For the past few years I've been on the fence about retiring. As I said as long as I'm having fun I'm not going to stop. I've seen lots of change for the better, new board technology, trucks, wheels, great hills and courses. And most of all the people make it really happen the old friends and new friends. Thanks!
Big thank you to Gareth of RoeRacing and Henry Hester for getting me back into this sport after two decades. I never thought I'd slalom racing again. Bulky too for telling me about it in 2002 at ASR.

Oregon State Games 100 cones

Had a great weekend in Salem Oregon slalom racing on a soap box derby track. I placed third and medaled in the Master's Tight Slalom. 100 cones six and seven feet apart toward the bottom in a straight line. It looked like a blurr after awhile. Thanks to my Roe teammates for great support and feedback. John Kim for doing some footage. Here is one of my practice runs.

Today's Sentinel Article "Capitola vice mayor stands by skate remark"

Here we go again. At the last meeting I said my name and that I'm a SKATEBOARDER. I wanted to speak for all the kids that were at the original skate park meeting Feb. 22, 2007 and I hoped the skate park would remain on the agenda. The Major said it is still on the radar.

Today I will be teaching 18 local skateboarders ages 8-13 years old how to slalom skateboard. It's hard to imagine a vice major of a beach community not liking them because the are skateboarders. Skateboarders can vote and choose where to spend their money.

About the skatepark or lack of skatepark in Capitola. "I don't like skateboarders, and I don't like skateboard parks," said Councilman Kirby Nicol before he proposed scrapping the entire idea. Great. Now where do the kids get to go. Luckily Soquel is building a park at the new Farm Location.

I think Aptos will be next.

Local newspaper article. I went a Capitola City Council meeting a few weeks ago. Linda Fridy heard me speak in support of the park. I mentioned this race and all the years I had to drive to San Jose to skate a good park. It took decades before we got the Santa Cruz Skatepark. I hope they don't have to wait that long for the next park.

I will be teaching a beginning and intermediate Slalom skateboard class this spring with Gary Holl, John Hutson, John Ravitch and Miko through Santa Cruz Parks and Recreation. 8 Years and up May 12 th Saturday in Santa Cruz.

Slide clinic with Cliff Coleman June 9 th through parks and recreation.

Skaters must know how to stop, start and turn. Bring your own skateboard and safety gear.

Placed second in the Giant Slalom and second in the Slalom. The Giant Slalom was a 1/2 a mile long course on a windy one lane road with 95 cones. Super scary fast and stopping at the bottom was intense. I saw smoke coming off peoples shoes. The slalom was downtown Hood River. So beautiful and right in front of Full Sail Ale.
