CORONA, Calif., (Dec. 15, 2009) – Monster Energy’s Dave Mirra hosted one of BMX’s more unique and certainly best-sponsored contests of the year this past weekend, featuring 16 of the world’s top stars of the sport - hand-picked by Mirra himself – in an inaugural event dubbed “King of the Animal House.”

Mirra was more than pumped with the way things turned out, citing the not only the high-level prizes from companies like Subaru and DC, but the overall presence Monster Energy enjoyed at this first-ever contest at Mirra’s indoor Greenville, N.C. – aka “Protown” - BMX compound.

“I can’t begin to explain how happy I am with the way things went this past weekend at the King of the Animal House,” said Mirra. “Most importantly the riders were super, super stoked at the end of it. I put a TON of time into this and, considering I’ve never put on a contest before, it was just really cool to see everything come together the way I’d imagined it in my head.

“Subaru, DC – they were stoked with the way things turned out. But this was a Monster theme for sure.”

The contest opened on Friday night with what Mirra dubbed a “Cash Jam” format. Here the riders would look to put up the burliest trick, or “a web clip,” as Mirra put it. The big winner on Friday night, as Mirra had earlier predicted, was Morgan Wade. The hard-hitting Texan threw a turndown over the park’s biggest gap and into the quarter pipe. And Wade pulled this gnarbuckle trick with a separated shoulder he’d popped the day before in practice. Add that to a jacked ankle and Wade was hobbling all weekend, even at the stellar awards banquet held at downtown Greenville’s LA Lounge.

“BMX riders feed off each other and Dave (Mirra) knows this. There was 16 guys competing at this event that are all friends, and when you see a buddy throw something big it forces you to step up your own game,” said Monster Energy’s Zack “Catfish” Yankush, MC for King of the Animal House. “One guy throws down with something insane and the riding level literally goes through the roof.”

With the amplitude level pinned and Catfish whipping everyone into a frenzy on the mic, Saturday’s contest blew up even bigger with a Subaru WRX – no doubt the biggest prize in the history of a grassroots backyard BMX contest such as Mirra’s – on the line, as well as a couple dirt bikes courtesy of DC and Yamaha. “We were looking for kind of a core feel with big prizes,” said Mirra. “And we organized everything with the riders in mind.”

“It’s one of the best times I’ve ever had at a contest,” said Monster Energy’s Ryan Guettler. “Definitely had that backyard feeling with all your friends there. The practice sessions were just as excellent as the contests, mucking around and joking with your buddies. It was a real good time.” Note: Guettler stepped off a high line on an under-rotated front flip and mushed his heel in the Cash Jam, which all but knocked him out of major prize contention.

Coming out on top was Dennis Enerson, who ripped all weekend. Enerson got the WRX, with veteran Ryan Nyquist pulling off 2nd – and a Yamaha dirt bike – while Craig Mast scored a bitchin’ Monster Energy edition Breitling watch for 3rd.

Regarding his plans for 2010, Mirra says he’s all for stepping up with the second annual King of the Animal House. “If I can get the sponsors interested in it like they were this year – or even more so – I’ll for sure do it again.”

Hibbert CrusheS Competition at Snocross Season Op...

Goodridge, Minn. (Dec. 14, 2009) – Monster Energy/Arctic Cat’s Tucker Hibbert was untouchable at round one of the AMSOIL Championship Snocross Series (ACSS) in Duluth, Minn. Sunday afternoon, Hibbert become the first rider in history to sweep the AMSOIL Duluth National two years in a row. In the 18-year history of the event, no rider has ever won both pro classes twice. Riders experienced brutal riding conditions with temperatures in the single digits, piercing winds and limited visibility.

Picking up where he left off last season, Hibbert remained undefeated by winning all four of his qualifying races and both pro main events. He had to fight for his win Saturday night in the Pro Super Stock final after pro rookie and fellow Arctic Cat rider, #60 Dan Ebert, took the holeshot and early lead. Hibbert made the pass on Ebert at the halfway mark of the 22-lap, 20-rider main event. Ebert held on for second with #48 Garth Kaufman rounding out the podium, making it an all Arctic Cat sweep.

With the sun setting on Sunday afternoon, pro riders geared up for the second pro main event of the weekend. Flat light along with freezing temperatures caused extreme snow dust, making it nearly impossible for riders to see in the Pro Open final. Known for his incredible ability to read lines, Hibbert rode flawlessly and never backed down for his 48th pro win in what he called “the scariest race of his career.”

Next up for Hibbert is round two of the ACSS tour Friday and Saturday at the historic Milwaukee Mile. It will be his first appearance at the Wisconsin venue. For more information on the event, check out isocracing.com.

I couldn’t see who was in front of me, behind me or beside me. I just tried to race off of memory and prayed for the best! All of the long hours preparing and testing paid off. It’s a good feeling going into a race knowing that you’ve done all you can. This is a great way to start the season!”

The Monster Energy Slednecks Invasion Tour is once again partnering with the AMSOIL ISOC National Snocross Series for 2009-2010.

Continuing on the success of last year's Invasion Tour, the Slednecks team backed by Monster Energy is once again fusing the high flying antics of freestyle snowmobiling with the best snocross series in the world.

While the plans have been on the down low for the last while, Monster and Slednecks have planted riders Paul Thacker, Cody Borchers, Jeff Mullin, Dylan Harju, and Matt "Tinger" Tinstad, just outside of Duluth at the Black Bear Casino ready to put on a show for the rescheduled Duluth Nati onal this weekend..

Slednecks Invasion Tour Manager Paul Thacker states, "The course is set, the riders are ready, and we will put on a great show tonight and tomorrow. We are stoked to be working with ISOC once again this year."

Previous Champion and 2009-2010 ISOC contender Robbie Malinoski also is excited to see freestyle back at the events. "I'm pumped to see the Slednecks Invasion Tour back! It adds another dimension to the show. I'm a freestyle fan as well as a race fan, and for fans to be able to see both in the same package is pretty cool."

Hayden on top for Pro Open points class championship after one round

The CSRA Snowcross Championship kicked off this past weekend at Searchmont Ski Resort in Sault Ste Marie, Ontario. And with over two feet of snow dumped on the region it was an auspicious beginning to the season.

Team Monster Energy-Yamaha-OTSFF Racing was in full force at the event with Iain Hayden mounted on the potent four-stroke Yamaha FX Nytro^®. After rigorous testing for the past month, Hayden and the entire crew were eager to get out onto the track and back into racing action. Durability tests had shown that the equipment was absolutely amazing and the weekend’s results were proof positive that the team is ready to be a major title contender in the premier Pro Open division.

Hayden let it be known from the start of the first heat that he has every intention to add another CSRA title to his resume this year, his first full season on the Canadian circuit since 2007. The Espanola, ON native shot off the start line like a missile to nail the holeshot and convincingly take his first win of the season. In the remaining two heats, Hayden again took control from start to finish making it an impressive three for three.

In the final, Hayden pulled yet another holeshot to take the field in tow. The race was short-lived, however, after a crash brought out the red flag. On the restart, Hayden again nailed the holeshot quickly pulling four to five sled lengths ahead of the chase group. By the end of the second lap, he had doubled that distance.

While on the gas, he briefly got in trouble on a rough section of track that had already felled a number of other riders. The incident winded Hayden and jarred his shoulder, causing him to pull off the track to regroup before getting back into the fray. Rejoining the action dead last, he put on a clinic harnessing the FX Nytro’s^® awesome power to still make his way into a seventh place finish, which together with the three heat wins saw him collect enough points to leave Round 1 of the title hunt at the top of the scoreboard.

“We’re here to win this Canadian national series. We’ve got the equipment and the team to do it with. Race to race is important but we’re here for the long haul. We picked up some valuable points this weekend and we know we have the sled to get the job done,” said team owner/manager Andre Laurin. “It’s unfortunate that Iain got a little shook up but the good news is that he didn’t re-injure the shoulder which gave him so much trouble last season.” Team is off to ISOC Milwaukee race December 19-20

Goodridge, Minn. (Dec. 8, 2009) – Monster Energy/Arctic Cat’s Tucker Hibbert is set to defend his title this weekend at the AMSOIL Championship Snocross Series’ (ACSS) season opener in Duluth, Minn. Less than ideal conditions pushed back the 18th running of the AMSOIL Duluth National two weeks from its traditional Thanksgiving weekend. Now, with temperatures in the teens and a blanket of snow across the state, the stage is set for an unforgettable kick-off to the ACSS season.

Last year, Hibbert swept both pro classes becoming only the second rider in history to do so. He convincingly won his heat races and finals, setting the stage for the remainder of his season. He went on to win every time he and his Monster Energy/Arctic Cat hit the track. With virtually no changes to his race program, he is confident and prepared for another record-breaking season.

Freeskier TJ Schiller broke out into superstar status at Winter X Games 2006—with weather moving in and slopestyle cancelled for lack of speed, the event was quickly changed to “Best Trick”. Seemingly all wrapped up with the win in the bag for Charles Gagnier and a switch 1080 mute, Schiller stomped a switch 1080 nose grab for the gold. With a style and tech that quickly thrust him in the limelight amongst legends like Tanner Hall, TJ lived up to the hype.

Just 31 when he lost his life in an attempt to save others, Aikau has physically been gone now for as long as he was here. MA: Let everyone know your stats.

Zac Attack: I am 8 years old and in the 3^rd grade. I am compact at a whopping 4’3”, hefty at 58 pounds. I am a complete toe head with dazzling blue eyes. My six pack abs are pretty impressive and my shoulders look I was raised to be a gladiator ( all the paddling). I rock with the “grom-ettes”. I surf regular foot.

MA: How often do you get to surf?

Zac Attack: I am fortunate to have awesome parents. I get to surf EVERYDAY during the week and on the weekends I can put in about 6-8 hours. It is what I live and breathe to do. I LOVE to be in the water with my friends and it is the gift of having the sun on my face, along with a big smile, catch a pod of dolphins jumping by, the leopard sharks underneath my toes and perfect 3-5 sets rolling in. There is nothing like it!

MA: Why do you think you have such a passion for surfing at your age?

Zac Attack: It is all I can think about. I have been involved in other sports like soccer, tennis, golf and baseball and, although I liked other sports and was good at them, NONE compare to surfing. I sometimes put my wetsuit in the dryer before I go to bed and sleep in it. I have a bunk bed and I sleep on the bottom and my board of choice gets the top bunk. When I go to sleep my TIVO is on the last surfing segment of Fins or Fuel TV. When I wake, it is still on. When I go to the bathroom, (if you know what I mean) I have the latest surfing magazine in hand catching up on the latest and greatest in the surfing world. I just feel it in my bones. It is the best feeling in the world. I was BORN to surf, there is just no doubt about it!

MA: Being as small as you are, tell me about your ideal wave coming your way.

Zac Attack: The perfect surf day; about 80 degrees outside, the water is so clear you can see the sandy bottom and the fish swimming underneath you, the water is warm but still refreshing. The pelicans are diving in the background, looking for the kind grind, and the wind is slightly offshore. The surf is 3-5 foot and the reef is breaking, creating a nice reef form at my favorite local spot- Seaside Reef. I like to look back at the beach and see Toby (photographer) snapping shots and I like it when he jumps in the water with his AWESOME water camera. Really cool! You can feel the energy in the water around you as everyone is STOKED.

MA: Describe your style of surfing right now.

Zac Attack: I have a smooth style and look for the perfect hit off the lip. I have been working to be one of the first 8 years old to pull a 360. Getting closer, I work on it every day. My dad says I surf like a young Kelly Slater with my dedication and commitment. My mom says I am going to be on the World Tour one day with “my style and my all around good guy personality”.

MA: What type of surfing style would you like to have in about 10 years?

Zac Attack: Hopefully just like Dane Reynolds and Dusty Payne! Dane is radical and innovative while Dusty is all around insane in all size and conditions. Seriously he is off the hook good. There are many surfing styles, I just hope to be able to continuing doing what I love and enjoy the gift I was given.

MA: You ever afraid of sharks when you are out in the water? Any stories you can share?

Zac Attack: Of course, you think about it sometimes. Just a ½ a mile from my favorite break is where that man was attacked and killed by a great white a little over a year ago. About 3 weeks ago a contest was cancelled (for the 1^st time) at San O’s trails because of sightings of 3 great whites over 10 ft. Then last week, Eric Geiselman, was attacked up in Santa Cruz and luckily made it in, but his board didn’t make the hit. For sure you think about it, it is their home and we are just privileged to use it as a playground everyday in the hopes we are never greeted by the true owners of the water park. YIKES!

MA: Tell everyone about your home beach.

Zac Attack: My local beach and favorite spot is Seaside Reef, located just at the end of Cardiff, CA. entering Solana Beach, CA. It rocks. There is surf consistently and it is still fun when it is small. When the reef is breaking you know we are in for some serious surfing and fun. Seaside is crazy good for many reasons. It is like a surfing resort with all the elements of perfect surf, perfect people and I couldn’t ask to live in a better place.

MA: You ever get the chance to surf with any of the pros?

Zac Attack: Yes, I am fortunate to get to surf with some of my favorite pros, as Seaside Reef is also home break to pro surfer and legend, Rob Machado. Rob has also done amazing things for our community through his surfing efforts and success. I also have surfed with Matt Beachum (host of New Pollution on Fuel TV), Damian Hobgood, and most recently got to surf with Julian Wilson and Dusty Payne. Totally cool! It is always inspiring to watch them throw some tail. I have probably surfed with Damian the most and Damian is fun. Damian and I like to swap boards every now and then, Damian likes to jump on my 4’4 fish- pretty sweet! He will pretty much jump on any board I have in the water and shred it up. Rob has let me take a float on his finless wood board too. I am pretty lucky to be surrounded by these great inspirations in the surfing world and community. Check out a fun surf session I did with Rob called Saw the Nose on www.youtube.com - type in INTboards and Saw the Nose should pop up. There is a little glimpse of me at Seaside with Rob. Seaside is a glimpse of heaven for many of my friends and surfers I admire and look up to.

MA: What is your favorite move to throw in a contest that you know will score high with the judges?

Zac Attack: Big vertical hits!! That is what the judges want to see. Each hit you get your score goes up, so a good way to think of it is one hit= 1 point + depending on the fluency and transition to the completion of the wave. More hits the better. Get sprays and fins out of the water is always good to up your score. But right now to hit the lip and finish the wave consistently is what I strive to accomplish.

MA: Tell everyone about your favorite board. Do you have a name for it?

Zac Attack: My “quiver” consist of many boards and I love them all, but my NEW Lost board-SD2 rocks! It was just shaped by Matt Biolos, who was just voted shaper of the year in Surfing Magazine, which feels like an honor at my age to have such a sick shaper, shaping my boards. I can really dig my rails in and carve up the wave like I never have before, so I am looking forward to the next couple of months with this board. My first wave on it, I was flying down the line and went for a vertical snap and all my fins came out- I didn’t land it but was thinking to myself did that just happen. Totally awesome feeling!

MA: Tell us about all of your sponsors and why you dig them?

Zac Attack:

Monster Energy – Monster is awesome because they support Xtreme Sports and have awesome athletes. I am not able to drink the energy drinks, being 8 and all, but I LOVE all the Hansen’s Drinks. They taste delicious and are better for my growing, budding body. I also did the head bands and wrist bands. They are sick! I wear them while I surf, it is a totally good look in the water.

Surfride - I LOVE Surfride, it feels like my second home, as it is located in my hometown and just a couple of blocks from my home break. John, the manager, is killer and so awesome, whenever I get a new board, he puts all my sponsors stickers on my boards for me so I am dialed for my events and to represent all my sponsors to the best of my ability. Surfride has many cool events too, like family night where we get to go and shop at a discount with music and food. Pretty awesome. Surfride is like having an extended family.

Cobian – Because they have the SICKEST sandals and flip flops and John Cobian, owner, is just a killer dude.

Bubble Gum – Well, not only does there branding and Logo rock, who doesn’t like BubbleGum? The wax smells crazy good. There is NOTHING like tearing off the paper of a new stick of BubbleGum wax and lubing up your new board. SWEETEST feeling ever and it just would exist without it! I also LOVE Brit Galland, owner, he has been sooo awesome in supporting my surfing commitment and efforts. We get to see each other a lot at Seaside.

I do want to thank all of my sponsors for believing in me at such a young age and for supporting my surfing efforts with all that they do for me. I am truly thankful to them all! YOU ALL ROCK and MANY THANKS! You are the best and surfing would not be the same without you!

MA: Where do you travel to for the contest?

Zac Attack: We travel all over, it is rad. We get to go to Santa Cruz, Pismo, Morro bay, HB, Newport, Ponto and all the way to the boarder! I am looking forward to starting to travel out of state and abroad in the upcoming year and years. I can’t wait to surf Hawaii and dream of surfing Costa Rica, Puerto Rico and Australia.

MA: Ever been asked for an autograph yet?

Zac Attack: Yes, I have, by my grandpa John. HAHA. But we did just have an artist do a killer board for him for his office, called the Zach “Attack” which I signed and mounted one of my sickest surfing photos to it! We are sending it to him for Christmas. SSSHHHHH! It is a secret.

MA: How do you handle all your girl fans at school?

Zac Attack: Girls are gross dude and my mom says the only women I have room for in my life is her and my sisters:J)

MA: What are your goals for the 2010 season?

Zac Attack: My goals for 2010 season are to make the NSSA Nationals and the WSA Championships. Making these events is a huge accomplishment. It means you have worked extremely hard throughout the year and are recognized for your hard work and efforts. I also plan to move up the ladder in my rankings. I have progressed overall since I have started and that is always a great sign of better things to come in my surfing future.

Louie Vito Retires!

"Dancer" Louie Vito will be performing his "Retirement Dance" tonight, Tuesday, November 24th at 9pm Eastern Time / 8pm Central Time on ABC's hit TV Show Dancing With The Stars. It will be his final dance as he will retire from his dancing career and will return to his day job of snowboarding. This last dance will be an "interesting" dance but Louie and his partner Chelsie Hightower are keeping mum on what exactly this dance will entail.

We know for sure that this dance will not be judged so there may some snowboard tricks incorporated in the performance.

It has been stated that if this "competition" had been determined soley on votes alone ... Louie would still be in. So thank goodness it wasn't otherwise Louie may have won this thing!

One thing is for sure, Louie has been working out hard with his personal trainer and he will be ready and anxious to begin his halfpipe training camp with the U.S. Snowboard Team this Friday at Copper Mountain, CO.

The first Grand Prix (which is also the first Olympic Trial) will be Friday and Saturday, December 11th and 12th. Louie has won the overall Grand Prix title the last two years in a row but this year may be a bit more meaningful. The top four Grand Prix place finishers (out of the five Grand Prix competitions this year) will be rewarded with a spot on the U.S. Olympic Halfpipe Snowboard Team.
