Ember Clothing at the Pura Vida No Pro

Ember Clothing Company volunteers at the Seventh Annual PURA VIDA NO PRO Surf Clinic, November 22, Playa Esterillos Este, Costa Rica.

The Pura Vida No Pro clinic benefits the children of the Hospicio de HuÈrfanos (orphanage) of San JosÈ a 150 yr. old orphanage in Costa Rica's capital.

The Pura Vida No Pro is a unique surf contest and clinic held on the beaches of Costa Rica. Designed to introduce orphans from the city of San Jose to the sport of surfing, it is an annual event that brings together the local surfing community and traveling surfers to connect and make a difference through cause-related travel.

The event consists of surfing lessons, horseback riding, beach games, sand castle building and arts & crafts.  Breakfast and lunch are included for all children between events.  The day ends with a big awards ceremony where every child receives a surfboard trophy and goodie bag.

Ember Clothing Company. Co-Owner Wally Emory and wife Erin volunteered while honeymooning in Costa Rica.  "Steve Sanchez and the Pura Vida No Pro group are truly wonderful individuals.  The entire day I could not stop smiling seeing the children playing and truly enjoying life as a child shouldî, said Wally.

"It was amazing timing that we happened to be on vacation and could be a part of such a wonderful event.  To see the smiles on all the faces involved truly touches your heart states Erin.  "We are already anticipating next years event!"

In Costa Rica, current conditions mandate that at the age of 18 the government consider these children to be autonomous and capable of living on their own and they are no longer able to remain in the orphanage.  They must leave the only secure home many of them have ever known.

However, the reality is that portions of these teenagers are still children because they have not matured enough to survive on their own.  Their fate is to be swallowed up by pornography, prostitution, drug abuse or worse yet, to completely disappear.  Many times, at best, they are plagued to repeat the cycle of abandonment.

Founder, Steve Sanchez, recognized the opportunity to do something for the children, helped to create a transitional facility, called Casa de SueÒos (House of Dreams) that will provide critical assistance, oversight, and safety through empowerment, not entitlement.
